In the Nov. 4th election, Kathy Bach was reelected Treasurer of Buena Vista County. Unfortunately, Kathy passed away before the election and this important position is now vacant. The Buena Vista County Board of Supervisors has called a special election to be held on December 16th to fill the vacancy. To have a Democratic Party nominee for that special election, we need to hold a special County Convention. At present I know of one person interested in the Party nomination. Others who wish to seek the nomination are welcome to attend and will be considered by the Convention. This Convention will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 18th at 7:00 PM in the Public Meeting Room in the basement of the Buena Vista County Courthouse, 215 E. 5th St., Storm Lake. Attendance is vitally important. No proxy votes are allowed, and a quorum is needed to conduct business. This convention is covered by the Iowa Open Meetings Law. All registered Democrats who reside in Buena Vista County are invited to attend. I consulted with the Iowa State Democratic Party, and eligibility to vote at this special convention is the same as for the regular County Convention held this past March. There are 25 seats, apportioned by precinct. If unable to attend, a delegate may designate a person to represent him/her, and that person will be a delegate. There are unfilled delegate positions. Other registered Democrats who are residents of Buena Vista County may request to fill vacant delegate positions. These will be filled first by those who reside in precincts with vacancies, and then at large until 25 delegates are seated. Voting for nominee for Treasurer will be by paper ballot if there is more than one candidate, but the Iowa Democratic Party Constitution does not allow secret ballots, so the delegate name will also be on the ballot.
