The Ecole nationale supérieure des Mines of Saint Etienne is an Institute of Science and Technology, dedicated to educating highly qualified engineers and managers for industry. The institute comprises six research centers dedicated to applied research and closely linked to the corporate world. Historically founded as a “School of Mines” in 1816, our graduate-level programs of Masters and PhDs now encompass most major engineering fields such as: ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ MATERIALS SCIENCE PROCESS ENGINEERING ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING INDUSTRIAL AND SYSTEMS ENGINEERING MICROELECTRONICS INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES HEALTH ENGINEERING BANKING AND FINANCE PROJECT MANAGEMENT 4TH YEAR PROFESSIONNAL INTERSHIP Duration: 16 to 21 weeks 4th year students have a solid background in fundamental and engineering sciences, and can be helpful in a variety of problem-solving situations which are listed below as examples. Extended periods of industrial experience are an essential component of the Master in Science and executive engineering program and closely supervised and assessed by faculty members and industrial partners. Altogether, 11 months of industrial practice are required and as of 2006, a 4-month international experience is mandatory. This brochure will give you a brief overview of how our students could be useful to your company. FINAL YEAR PROJECTS Duration: 16 to 26 weeks Final projects are often equivalent to first entry-level jobs. Students can be in charge of a whole project (under the supervision of a senior engineer). Master in Science and executive engineering Examples of tasks our students have performed during their 4th year placements: Finance - Risks and problems modelling in portfolio management. - Accounting control system: flow analysis. - Quantitative modelling of capital markets, statistical analysis. - Process improvement in a financial and logistics management service. Information Technology - Design and implementation of an inventory control software. - Analysis, design and development of a database on diabetic retinopathy. - Administration of information systems and networks. Industrial management - Improvement of the information system for the supply chain, warehouses and internal logistics. - Scheduling and production optimization. - Construction of a cement plant: civil engineering, mechanics, electricity specifications update and checking. - SPC optimization, sampling and quality insurance. Environmental engineering - Optimization of a water-treatment plant for urban effluents. - Management of drinking water distributing network: losses optimization. Materials science - Study and improvement of hydraulic brake cables. - Mechanical parts design for a state-of-the-art system, associated experiments. - Snow mechanical study and avalanches dynamics. - Fatigue assessment in automotive structures, simulation and experiment. - Heating time study of glow plugs for diesel engines. Health engineering - Arm prosthesis study, materials optimization. - Study project of asthma medication costs for the public health department. Process engineering - Converting biomass into liquid, high temperature and high pressure work. - Exploring the possibilities of the ABAQUS software in fluid mechanics modelling for satellites’ fuel tanks. Examples of final year projects: Processes and energy - Optimization and improvement of drinking water treatment plants, pretreatment processes. computer systems management. - Order and supply management software for the textile brand of a large distribution group. Organization and industrial management - Implementation of an information system in a new factory. - Improvement of econometric models to forecast crude oil prices. Materials science and mechanics - Dynamic analysis of the A 400M plane mast - reactor. - Design and optimization of resistant heat shielding systems for spacecrafts. - Mechanical modelling of human skin in the case of fold formation. - Pilot study of antenna standardization for communication satellite in composite materials - Conception and design of a mobile phone, choice of materials. Environmental engineering - Assistance to a poor village of the Peruvian Andes to solve the environmental, sanitary and civil engineering problems of its infrastructures. Strategic steering of industrial organizations - In charge of strategic planning and resources allocation. - Optimization of Corail InterCités’ tariff range (SNCF’s subsidiary – French railroads). Information technology - Computational grid emulation for performance analysis of mesh partitioners. - Pattern and prototype design in numerical identity R&D. - Implementation of ITIL recommendations for internal Microelectronics - Evaluation and data processing from digital simulation of the streamline flow around a car. - Check and design of an audio and video accelerated arithmetical model for the software “Night in Gale, version II”. - Physical and electrical analyses on semi conductive components returned by automobile customers.
