L a première guerre mondiale a meurtri les 67 communes du Pays
du Coquelicot sur la durée du conflit. Ses habitants sont devenus
soldats ou ont subi l'exode. Ses villes, villages, champs, bois et vallées ont
été défigurés.
L'année 1916 et sa célèbre bataille de la Somme sont commémorées
chaque année à Thiepval, Beaumont-Hamel, Pozières, Albert, Fricourt,
Contalmaison, Bus-les-Artois, Courcelette, etc.
Pour le Centenaire de la première Guerre Mondiale, le Pays du Coquelicot
et ses élus ont décidé de proposer un programme qui va bien au-delà des
commémorations traditionnelles liées à l'année 1916 en offrant à la fois
aux habitants et aux visiteurs du monde entier des moments forts sur 5
années.

T he First World War wiped out the 67 towns and villages of the Poppy
Country from the beginning right to the end of the fighting. Local
residents became soldiers or were forced to join the exodus. The face of
our towns, villages, fields, woods and valleys changed completely.
The year 1916, with its sadly-famous Battle of the Somme, is
commemorated each year at Thiepval, Beaumont-Hamel, Pozières,
Albert, Fricourt, Contalmaison, Bus-les-Artois, Courcelette and many
other sites.
For this First World War centenary, the Poppy Country and its
representatives have decided to put together a programme that goes far
beyond the traditional commemorative events for 1916, offering both
residents and visitors from all over the world a series of major events
stretching over a five-year period.

LE PAYS DU COQUELICOT
AU CŒUR DE LA GRANDE GUERRE
L a Première Guerre Mondiale s’étend du 1er Août 1914 au 11
Novembre 1918 sur quatre fronts : le front Ouest, le front Est, le front Italien (les Alpes) et le front des Balkans.
Le prétexte qui déclenche la guerre est l’attentat à Sarajevo le 28 juin 1914, assassinat
de l’Archiduc austro-hongrois, François Ferdinand et de son épouse. L’Autriche déclare
la guerre à la Serbie. La guerre doit être courte. En France, la mobilisation générale
est décrétée le 2 août 1914 ; tous les hommes de 20 à 48 ans sont mobilisés. Le 3 Août
1914, l’Allemagne déclare la guerre à la France. C’est par des systèmes d’alliances et
d’ententes que les pays vont s’engager dans un conflit que l’on qualifiera de mondial.
PAR SON CARACTÈRE MONDIAL, LA GUERRE MOBILISE PLUS DE 40 NATIONS.
Le 5 septembre 1914, avec la bataille de la Marne, les Français réussissent à défendre
Paris. Cette bataille marque également la fin de la guerre de mouvement, et le début de
la guerre de position. La guerre sera donc plus longue que prévue.
Dès Novembre 1914, pendant quatre longues années, la Somme est le théâtre
d’opérations militaires continuelles.
L’armée allemande arrive en Picardie le 31 août 1914. Dans le Pays du Coquelicot,
ce sont d’abord les troupes françaises qui livrent des combats meurtriers et arrêtent
l’avancée allemande. Le front part de la mer du Nord, passe par le Pas-de-Calais et
la Somme, entre Albert et Acheux-en-Amiénois. Joffre demande alors de fixer les
positions des armées françaises dans ce qu’il appelle le « coude de la Somme ». En effet,
du 20 au 30 septembre se déroulent les premières « batailles de la Somme » .
Les Allemands évacuent une partie du territoire, notamment la ville d’Albert, suite
aux combats de septembre. À partir d'octobre 1914, les armées françaises et allemandes
s’enfoncent dans les tranchées formant un front stable entre Albert et Péronne.
Pendant l'été 1915, les britanniques (et les armées du Commonwealth) relèvent les
français. Les lignes de combats passent par les villages de Beaumont-Hamel, Thiepval,
Pozières, La Boisselle, Bécordel, Bécourt, Fricourt, Mametz, Carnoy, Maricourt, Bray,
Curlu. Les armées françaises et britanniques se rejoignent à Maricourt, point de
jonction avec Bray-sur-Somme.
L’année 1915, c’est aussi la première utilisation des gaz à Ypres et les batailles
meurtrières dans le Pas-de-Calais, en Champagne et à Gallipoli (Turquie). La guerre
des mines fait rage dans le secteur d'Albert.
À la fin de l’année 1915, une conférence inter-alliés à Chantilly entre Joffre et
Haig définit une offensive pour 1916. La bataille de Verdun impacte la Somme.
Initialement, la bataille doit être une action menée au sud de la Somme par les français
avec appui britannique au nord du fleuve. Elle devient une bataille britannique au
nord sur l’Ancre avec appui au sud des forces françaises.
La bataille de la Somme débute le 24 juin par une préparation d’artillerie exceptionnelle.
Le 1er juillet à 7h28 commence la Big Push. L’armée britannique perd plus de 58 000
hommes. La bataille continue pendant 5 mois et se termine le 18 novembre en raison
des fortes intempéries. La bataille de la Somme fera 1,2 millions de victimes, toutes
nationalités confondues.
En 1917, le secteur redevient relativement calme. A partir du 16 mars, c’est la
destruction des villages par les Allemands avant leur retraite volontaire sur la ligne
de fortification Hindenburg allant de Lens à Soissons. En Avril, les États-Unis entrent
en guerre aux côtés des Alliés.
De grandes batailles comme à Vimy pour les Canadiens, à Bullecourt pour les
Australiens, au Chemin des Dames pour les Français se déroulent en 1917. S’en suivent
les mutineries et la bataille de Cambrai.
En 1918, c’est le retour à la guerre de mouvement. Mi-mars, les allemands attaquent
les britanniques et reviennent dans le secteur pour reprendre Amiens. Les villages
sont à nouveau évacués. En avril, les australiens arrêtent la poussée allemande à
Villers–Bretonneux et évitent ainsi la prise d’Amiens. Mais de violents combats et
bombardements continuent d’éclater sur tout le Pays du Coquelicot.
Enfin en août 1918, Foch lance dans le secteur la dernière contre-offensive francobritannique « la bataille d’Amiens ». Au cours de cette « dernière » bataille, tous les
villages du Pays du Coquelicot sont libérés. Les villages du front et la Ville d’Albert
sont entièrement détruits. Il ne restait que 10 maisons à Albert ! Le 11 novembre, à
Compiègne dans la Forêt de Rethondes, l’armistice est signé.

AT THE HEART OF THE GREAT WAR
T he First World War spanned the period from the 1st August 1914 to the 11th November 1918 with fighting across four
fronts: the Western Front, the Eastern Front, the Italian
Front (the Alps) and the Balkan Front.
The pretext that set off the War was the attempted assassination – in Sarajevo on the
28th June 1914 – of the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife.
Austria declared war on Serbia. This war should have been a brief one. In France,
conscription was announced on 2nd August 1914, and all men were called up. On
the 3rd August 1914, Germany declared war on France. It is through the systems of
alliances : the "Triple Entente" and the "Triple Alliance" agreed to engage in a global
world conflict.
The global nature of this war meant that it mobilised over 40
nations.
On the 5th September 1914, with the Battle of the Marne, the French succeeded in
defending Paris. This Battle also marked the end of mobile warfare and the beginning
of static and trench warfare. The War would then become far more drawn-out than
had been previously foreseen.
From November 1914, for four long years, the French region of Picardie became the
Operations Site for continual military operations.
The German Army arrived in Picardie on the 31 August 1914. In the Poppy Country,
it was primarily the French troops that engaged in bloody conflicts to halt the German
advance. The Front began at the sea to the north, passing through Pas-de-Calais and
the Somme between Albert and Acheux-en-Amiénois. Joffre (Commander-in-Chief of
the French Army) asked that the French Army positions be fixed in what he referred to
as the ‘Elbow of the Somme’. Indeed, it was from the 20 th to the 30 th of September that
the very first ‘Battles of the Somme’ occurred.

The Germans evacuated part of the territory, notably the town of Albert. Following the
fighting of September and October 1914, the French and German armies dug down in
the trenches, forming a fixed Front between Albert and Péronne. In December 1914,
a battle took place in Ovillers-la-Boisselle with a regiment from Brittany forming the
French contingent. In the area of Fricourt, we know that there was a Truce period over
Christmas.
From the summer 1915, the British (and the Commonwealth Armies) came to relieve
the French. The Battle Lines went through the villages of Beaumont-Hamel, Thiepval,
Pozières, La Boisselle, Bécordel, Bécourt, Fricourt, Mametz, Carnoy, Maricourt, Bray
and Curlu. The French and British troops met up at Maricourt, bordering Bray-surSomme.
The year 1915 also marked the first use of gas in Ypres as well as the terrible battles in
Pas-de-Calais, in Champagne and in Gallipoli. Mine warfare also became common in
this sector.
At the end of 1915, an Inter-Allied Conference took place in Chantilly between the
French Commander-in-Chief, Joffre, and British Commander, Field Marshal Haig, to
define an offensive plan for 1916. The Battle of Verdun had an impact on the Somme.
Initially, the fighting should have been led from the south of the Somme by the French
with support from the British north of the river; it became a British battle to the north
of the River Ancre with support from French forces to the south.
The Battle of the Somme began on the 24th June with exceptional artillery preparations.
On the 1st July at 7.30am, the Big Push began. The British Army lost more than 58 000
men. The Battle continued for five months and ended on 18th November because of
terrible weather conditions. If you count casualties from all nationalities, The Battle of
the Somme was to blame for a total of 1.2 million victims.
In 1917, the Poppy Country area became relatively calm once more. From 16th March,
the German troops destroyed villages before they voluntarily withdrew to the
Hindenburg Line from Lens to Soissons. In April, America entered the War, joining
the side of the Allies.
Significant battles took place in 1917, such as the Battle of Vimy for the Canadians,
Bullecourt for the Australians and Chemin des Dames for the French. These were
followed by mutinies and the Battle of Cambrai.
In 1918, it was once more time for mobile warfare. In the middle of March, the Germans
attacked the British and returned to the sector to try to take back Amiens. The villages
were evacuated all over again. In April, the Australians held off the German push at
Villers-Bretonneux, thereby preventing Amiens from being taken, but violent fighting
and bombardments continued throughout the Poppy Country.
Finally, in August 1918, French Marshal Foch launched the final Franco-British
counter-offensive in the sector, known as The Battle of Amiens. During this ‘last’
battle, all the villages of the Poppy Country were liberated. The villages along the
Front and the town of Albert were completely destroyed. On the 11th November, in
Compiègne in the Forêt de Rethondes, the Armistice was signed.
Deux histoires d’amour dans la tourmente

C'est une histoire romanesque inspirée de
faits réel mettant en scène deux couples
fictifs. Pendant toute la durée du Centenaire
ils vont se retrouver malgré eux, pris dans le
tourbillon de la Première Guerre mondiale.
Nous suivrons leurs histoires respectives.
Ils vont devoir vivre avec cette terrible
guerre mais surtout lui survivre. Ces deux
histoires reflètent l'état d'esprit de tous
ces couples privés de leur bonheur et qui
ont traversé les 1562 jours de cauchemar
sombres et meurtriers. Certains auront la
chance d'être réunis, mais personne n'en
sortira réellement indemne. Des au revoir
ou des adieux ? Au terme de cette guerre, nos
deux couples seront-ils réunis ou seront-ils
séparés à jamais ?… à suivre…
Hortense et Guillaume
◊
Hortense et Guillaume sont deux jeunes
gens de la campagne qui se sont mariés
le 25 avril 1914, 100 jours avant le début
de la guerre en France. Leur amour va se
retrouver déchiré à cause de la Première
Guerre mondiale. Le 3 août 1914, Guillaume
embarque dans le train à la gare d’Albert
en direction du front. Hortense devra
remplacer son mari pour le travail des
champs.
Jeanne et Maxime
◊
Jeanne et Maxime sont deux natifs d'Albert.
Maxime travaille dans les usines Pernaut et
Jeanne est institutrice. Quand la Première
guerre Mondiale éclate, Maxime est
mobilisé à Albert le 3 août 1914. Il embarque
dans le train en direction du front.
Jeanne, de son côté, poursuit son travail
d'institutrice, puis finira par rejoindre
les usines de munitions pour participer à
l'effort de guerre.

It is a fictional story inspired by a true story
featuring two fictional couples. During all
the Centenary, they will find themselves
caught in the hell of the First World War.
We follow their stories. They will have to
live with this terrible war but also survive.
Both stories reflect the spirit of all those
couples deprived of their happiness and
who lived the 1,562 days of dark and deadly
nightmare. Some of them will have the
chance to be together, but no one really
escape unscathed. Of Goodbye or Farewell?
After this war, will these two couples be
back together or separated because of the
death?... Who knows?
En 1885, les travaux de construction de
la Basilique Notre-Dame de Brebières
commencent. En 1897 la statue de la Vierge
dorée est posée au sommet du clocher. Mais
l’édifice souffre pendant toute la durée de la
Première Guerre Mondiale.

Chaque jour, la basilique reçoit de
nombreux obus, détériorant soit un vitrail,
une statue, l’escalier du presbytère, le
transept, le clocher, le dôme… Le vendredi
15 janvier 1915, vers 15 heures, la coupole
vole en éclats et peu après, la Vierge en
cuivre doré, de six mètres de haut, s’incline.
La Vierge penche davantage pendant la
nuit avec le vent. En 4 années de guerre, la
basilique reçoit plus de 2000 obus.

C’est en regardant cette Vierge à l’enfant
pencher, que les soldats imagineront une
légende « Quand la Vierge tombera, la guerre
finira ». La Vierge dorée restera inclinée et
observera la dévastation des villages dans
l’enfer de la bataille de la Somme de 1916.

Cela durera jusqu’au 16 Avril 1918, date à
laquelle, la Vierge penchée tombe… mais la
guerre continue jusqu’en Novembre 1918.
À la fin de la guerre, la Basilique et la ville
d’Albert sont totalement en ruine.
In 1885, the construction of the basilica
begin and in 1897, the golden Virgin is
on the top of the steeple. But the most
spectacular architectural building in the
town of Albert, will be destroyed during
the Great War.

Day after day, the basilica suffers from the
shelling, damaging a window, a statue, the
staircase of the presbytery, the transept,
the bell tower, the dome… Friday 15th,
January 1915, about three o'clock, the dome
shattered and soon after the six meters
high Virgin (made in bronze), overcoming
the bell tower of the building, bowed. And
the Virgin leaned more during the night
because of the wind. During the War, the
basilica was bombed by more than 2000
shells.

Soldiers imagined a legend about the
leaning Virgin "When the Virgin falls, the
War will end". The golden Virgin was the
witness of the devastation of villages in the
hell of the Somme.

Until April 16, 1918, about three o'clock, the
leaning Virgin falls... but the war continues
until November. At the end of the war, the
basilica and the town of Albert are totally in
ruins.

In 1926, le basilica is rebuilt as the first one.
Hortense et Guillaume

are two young people from the countryside
who got married on April 25th, 1914, 100
days before the War in France. Their love
be torned because of the First World War.
The 3rd August 1914, Guillaume boarded the
train in Albert that took him to the front.
Hortense will have to replace her husband
to work in the fields.
Jeanne et Maxime
◊
are both from the town of Albert. Maxime
worked in the Potez industry and Jeanne
was a teacher. When the first World War
broke out. The 3rd August 1914. In Albert,
Maxime was mobilized and took the
direction to the front. Jeanne, kept on
working as a teacher and finally, joined the
munitions factories to participate in the war
effort.
