Jean-Michel Signoles est né dans la Cité médiévale de Carcassonne.
Il fonde en 1967 l’entreprise Chipie. Cette société de vêtements sportswear haut-de-gamme connaît un essor
considérable et la marque remporte un succès sans précédent.
Lors d’un voyage à Paris en 1974, il achète chez un antiquaire sa première malle ancienne fabriquée par
Goyard. Séduit par cet objet rare, il se passionne pour le métier de malletier et rassemble au fil des années
une importante collection d’anciens bagages Goyard.
Il rachète en 1989 l’Hôtel de la Cité, vieux palace au coeur de l’antique cité de Carcassonne, puis réaménage
entièrement cet hôtel.
En 1997, il cède l’Hôtel de la Cité au Groupe Orient-Express puis vend en 1999 l’ensemble de son groupe.
Entre-temps, en juillet 1998, il rachète la Maison Goyard. Son objectif est alors de redonner à cette Maison
d’articles de voyage de luxe son éclat et sa notoriété dans la plus pure tradition des grands malletiers français.
Avec Goyard, Jean-Michel Signoles continue à affirmer son respect du patrimoine, son goût extrême pour les
belles matières et sa sensibilité d’esthète qui seront mis à contribution pour ce concours.
Jean-Michel Signoles was born in the medieval town of Carcassonne.
In 1967, he founded Chipie, a clothing compagny specializing in high end sportswear that soon met with tremendous success.
During a trip to Paris in 1974, he stumbled upon a vintage trunk by Goyard at an antique dealer, and immediately fell in love
with it. He soon developed a passion for luggage-making, and started collecting heritage pieces by Goyard, a collection he has
been constantly expanding ever since.
In 1989, he bought the Hôtel de la Cité, a once reputed luxury hotel located right in the heart of Carcassonne’s fortified citadel,
and restored it to its former glory.
In 1997, he sold the Hôtel de la Cité to the Groupe Orient-Express, then sold the rest of his assets in 1999.
In the meantime, he bought Maison Goyard in July 1998, with the ambition to re-establish the prestige and fame of this
renowned malletier in strict accordance with the purest tradition of French fine craftsmanship.

flair for refined aesthetics. which will be very useful for the event.
