Le 16 mai 1979, Rhys Chatham a présenté Guitar Trio (1977), sa composition pour trois
guitares électriques et une charleston, dans le cadre d’une exposition initiée par
l’artiste Peter Nadin dans son loft situé au 84 West Broadway dans le Lower Manhattan.
L’exposition avait débuté en novembre 1978 avec la présentation de « 30 days work », durée
du travail manuel que Christopher D’Arcangelo, Nick Lawson et Peter Nadin avaient consacré
à la réfection du loft en galerie.
Après un mois de présentation de « 30 days work », c’est-à-dire de l’espace d’exposition
lui-même, plusieurs artistes, en commençant par Daniel Buren, ont été successivement
invités à présenter une oeuvre en réponse aux conditions existantes et/ou aux oeuvres déjà
présentes dans l’espace. Guitar Trio, la seule performance durant les six mois de de
l’exposition, était interprété par Glenn Branca, Nina Canal et Rhys Chatham aux guitares,
et Wharton Tiers à la charleston. Le CAC Brétigny a le plaisir de réunir à nouveau deux
des membres de la formation originale, Rhys Chatham et Nina Canal, pour interpréter Guitar
Trio lors du vernissage de l’exposition “Anarchisme sans adjectif : Sur le travail de
Christopher D’Arcangelo, 1975-1979”. Ils seront accompagnés de Jean-François Pauvros à la
guitare électrique et Ahmad Compaoré à la charleston.
Présentée en juin au CAC Brétigny (France), l’exposition « Anarchisme sans adjectif… »
voyagera ensuite à Artists Space à New York en septembre, puis au Centro Cultural
Kulturunea Montehermoso, Vitoria-Gasteiz en Espagne à l’automne.

On 16 May 1979, Rhys Chatham presented Guitar Trio (1977), his composition for three
electric guitars and hi-hat as part of an evolving exhibition initiated by the artist Peter
Nadin in his loft at 84 West Broadway in Lower Manhattan. The exhibition had begun in
November 1978 with the presentation of “30 days work” the amount of labor time Christopher
D’Arcangelo, Nick Lawson and Peter Nadin had invested in renovating the loft to include a
gallery. After a month-long presentation of their labor – the exhibition space itself –
various artists beginning with Daniel Buren were invited to contribute work in response to
the existing conditions and/or work within the space. The lineup for Guitar Trio, the only
performance event during the six-month exhibition, consisted of Glenn Branca, Nina Canal
and Rhys Chatham on guitars and Wharton Tiers on hi-hat. The CAC Brétigny has the pleasure
of reuniting two members of the original line up, Nina Canal and Rhys Chatham, to play
Guitar Trio for the opening of the exhibition “Anarchism Without Adjectives: On the Work of
Christopher D’Arcangelo (1975-1979)”. They will be joined by Jean-François Pauvros on
electric guitar and Ahmad Compaoré on hi-hat.
Opening at the CAC Brétigny (France) in June, the exhibition will travel to Artists Space
New York (USA) in September and the Centro Cultural Montehermoso Kulturunea,
Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain) in the Autumn.
