Ethiraj College for Women
Ethiraj College for Women (Autonomous), Chennai – 600 008 Re-accredited with 'A' Grade by NAAC College with Potential for Excellence Language teaching: challenges encountered, solutions proposed An international multi-lingual Conference SPONSORED BY THE UGC September 7th and 8th 2016 Organised by the Departments of Tamil, Hindi, Samskrit and French Venue: The College Premises 1 About us In1948, an institution was established by Shri V. L. Ethiraj, exclusively for the purpose of women’s education. Today, this institution, Ethiraj College for Women, stands tall providing quality education for nearly 7500 students from across the country. It is one of the select colleges in India recognised with the award of College with Potential for Excellence. Currently, the College offers 29 UG courses, 21 PG courses including AICTE approved MBA and MCA, 21 research programmes (M.Phil. and Ph.D.) as well as several certificate courses for its students. All endeavours of this College are centred in concerted efforts around its motto: to strive, to seek and not to yield, thus striving to equip all students with the tools needed to face any future challenges with dignity and courage. The Departments of Tamil and Hindi were started in 1948, followed by the Departments of French and Samskrit in 1959 and 1978 respectively. The Department of Tamil has more than 25 years of education and research at the PG, M.Phil and Ph.D levels. The Departments of Hindi, Samskrit and French are wholly dedicated to second and basic language teaching. It was in this context, that a multi-disciplinary venture was conceptualised. Rationale & Objectives Language teachers, irrespective of the languages taught, often seem to share the same problems. After years of seeking wisdom on an individual basis, it would be ideal to have a Conference, placing together second language and basic language teachers of Tamil, Hindi, Samskrit and French. This would help the teachers understand the diversity and complexity of the problems encountered in order to brainstorm a common multi-pronged teaching methodology, based on actual experiences on the field. This conference will: - provide a platform for language teachers from all over the globe to come together and discuss problems and success stories in their fields of work - identify similarities in teaching contexts and proven methodologies that can be replicated in such a way that student-learning is optimised in order to enable good appropriation and usage of language structures - form alliances on a multilingual stage that will promote comparative research in second language teaching and learning methodologies 2 Paper presentation Since this is a multi-lingual conference, papers are called for in English as this would foster more interaction across languages, leading to formulation of comparative strategies that can be employed in the classroom. However, delegates can also present their papers in the language of their choice. Papers are called for on the following three thrust areas: i. The art of teaching of Literature a. Tamil: Sangam literature to Modern literature b. Hindi: Hindi literature from 1980s c. Samskrit: Dramatic Literature d.
