Bienvenue au 31e anniversaire du Festival
une célébration du progrès !
Chaque année, les festivaliers demandent “Quel est donc votre secret ? Comment gardez-vous
les choses fraîches et créatives année après année ?”
Et la réponse est vraiment très simple : nous nous concentrons exclusivement sur ​​le progrès ! En
fait, c’est cette même méthode de réflexion prospective qui m’a permis de démarrer le Festival
il y a 31 ans avec mon ami Charles Magras. Nous nous sommes demandés “Que pouvons-nous
faire culturellement l’année prochaine, qui serait très spécial pour Saint-Barth ? La première
année nous avons donc fait quelque chose d’innovant : nous avons apporté la musique classique
professionnelle sur notre petite île bien-aimée au milieu de la mer des Caraïbes ! Et depuis,
chaque année, notre festival continue d’innover, de progresser, et toujours avec la plus haute
qualité possible.
Avec l’aide annuelle de généreux donateurs comme vous, qui contribuez aux revenus
indispensables sur lesquels ce Festival repose, nous pouvons bâtir notre fondation de la
musique classique. Nous avons prévu de la musique classique de renommée mondiale ainsi
que de l’opéra et du jazz et de la danse et des programmes éducatifs et de sensibilisation des
seniors et... La liste s’allonge encore et encore ! Ainsi, lorsque vous me saluez lors d’un concert,
votre don en main et que vous vous demandez ce que je pense, maintenant vous savez ! Nous
sommes impatients de jouer, d’échanger culturellement, de démarrer les programmes éducatifs
qui sont stimulants, engageants et excitants autant pour nos artistes que pour les spectateurs...
et les progrès futurs à venir !

Every year, supporters ask “So what IS your secret? How DO you keep things fresh and creative
year after year?”
And the answers are really very simple: we concentrate exclusively on progress! In fact, that method
of forward thinking is exactly how the Festival got started over 31 years ago when I began this work
with my friend Charles Magras. We asked one another “What can we do next year, culturally, that
will be very special for St. Barth?” And so in the first year we did something brand new: we brought
professional classical music to our beloved little island in the middle of the Caribbean Sea! And every
year since then our Festival has added new aspects that are innovative, progressive, and always of
the highest quality possible.
With the annual help of generous sponsors like you, who contribute the much-needed monies that
this Festival relies upon, we can build our classical music foundation. We have included world-class
classical music and opera and jazz and dance and childrens’ educational programs and senior
outreach and... The list of progress goes on and on! So when you greet me at a concert with
your donation in hand and you’re wondering what I’m thinking, now you know! I’m thinking that
we’re looking forward to performances, cultural exchange and educational programs that are
stimulating, engaging and exciting for our performers and generous audience members alike...
and the future progress to come!

FESTIVAL DE MUSIQUE 2015
Depuis 1985, le Festival de musique scande la vie de notre île et s’inscrit presque
naturellement dans notre paysage artistique et culturel. Cette évidence ferait
presque oublier que cet évènement existe grâce à la passion, au travail et à
l’exigence de ses organisateurs. La programmation proposée sera encore une fois
de grande qualité, tant par le choix des œuvres que des interprètes.
Le Festival de musique est une de ces pierres fondatrices sur lesquelles s’édifie
patiemment une vie culturelle et artistique riche à Saint-Barthélemy.
Chaque année, l’offre s’enrichie, se diversifie et se complète. Cinéma, littérature,
musique, danse, théâtre, peinture, sculpture : tous les arts ou presque ont
désormais leur place, soit à l’occasion d’évènements culturels, soit au travers de
nombreuses associations, de galeristes ou de mécènes. Ces initiatives formidables
se complètent et résonnent entre elles. La programmation du Carnaval des
animaux de Camille Saint-Saëns pour cette 31ème édition du Festival fait écho
aux sculptures de l’artiste Bjorn Okholm Skaarup exposées sur le parvis de l’Hôtel
de la Collectivité depuis novembre 2014. De ce foisonnement naît le dialogue des
œuvres. Je suis certain que l’année 2015 ouverte en beauté par le Festival de
musique poursuivra cette dynamique vertueuse.

Nous voulons d’abord remercier les Communautés Catholiques de
Lorient et de Gustavia. le Père Firorenzo Rossi et les soeurs, ainsi que
la Communauté Anglicane et le Révérend Charles Vere Nicoll qui depuis
plusieurs années nous ouvrent les portes de leurs églises. Sans cet
accompagnement fidèle et précieux, les concerts n’auraient pas lieu.

Le Roberts Marcus Trio est très connu pour son style
virtuoses. Ce Trio a une totale nouvelle approche de
l’interprétation du Trio Jazz. La vision de Robert du
Trio Jazz a rapidement progressé après le choix du
percussionniste Jason Marsalis pour la présidence en
1994 (quand Jason avait tout juste 17 ans). Tous les
musiciens du Trio partagent équitablement cette évolution de la musique par le changement de son tempo,
son humeur, sa texture, ou de sa forme, à travers un
système de signaux musicaux. L’énorme talent individuel de chaque membre du Trio est spectaculaire
avec le son puissamment rythmique du groupe. D’où
l’impression d’entendre un groupe bien plus important
que trois personnes sur la scène. L’un des aspects
agréable du Marcus Roberts Trio concert est qu’il
donne aux spectateurs l’impression que ces trois musiciens ont réellement du plaisir à jouer ensemble.

The Marcus Roberts Trio is known for its virtuosic
style. This trio has an entirely new approach to jazz
trio performance. Roberts’ vision of the jazz trio grew
rapidly following the selection of drummer Jason
Marsalis for the drum chair in 1994 (when Jason
was just 17). All the trio’s musicians share equally in
shaping the direction of the music through changing
its tempo, mood, texture, or form, through a system of
musical cues. Each trio member’s enormous individual
talent is showcased along with the powerfully rhythmic
group sound. This makes it sound like a lot more than
three people up there on the stage! One of the most
enjoyable aspects of a Marcus Roberts Trio concert is
that it is so apparent to the audience that these three
musicians are really having fun playing together.

He is a operatic bass-baritone born in Turkey. He has sung in leading opera houses in the United States and Europe. He was
Turkey’s first ever winner at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition.He opened the 2009-2010 season with his San
Francisco Opera debut as Ferrando in Il Trovatore. In the 2008-2009 season, he returned to the Metropolitan Opera as
Ferrando in Il Trovatore and made his Grand Théâtre de Gèneve debut in the same role. He soloed at Carnegie Hall for
Dvořák’s Stabat Mater. Future engagements include his debut with Washington National Opera as Zaccaria in Nabucco.
A recipient of numerous awards including the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition 2002 in Vienna.

Il rejoint la section double basses de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Louisiane en Septembre 2010. Matthew
a été un membre de l’Orchestre Symphonique de New World à Miami Beach et de l’Orchestre Symphonique
Albany. Matthew a aussi joué dans YOA Orchestra of the Americas comme Basse Principal, ainsi qu’aux Britt
Festival, Music in the Mountains, le Lucerne Festival Academy, Music Academy of the West, National Repertory
Orchestra et le Chautauqua Institute.
He joined the Double Bass Section of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2010. Matthew
was a member of the New World Symphony Orchestra in Miami Beach, and the Albany Symphony Orchestra.
Matthew has also participated in the YOA Orchestra of the Americas as Principal Bass, as well as the Britt Festival, Music in the
Mountains, the Lucerne Festival Academy, Music Academy of the West, National Repertory Orchestra, and the Chautauqua Institute.

Membre fondateur du Enso String Quartet, Richard est originaire de Nouvelle Zélande. Il prend beaucoup de
plaisir à enseigner et à jouer en parcourant l’Amérique du Nord. Mais il est occupé en grande partie à tourner et
à enregistrer des CD à succès avec le Enso String Quartet. Il est Violoncelliste Principal du River Oaks Chamber
Orchestra et joue régulièrement pour Music in Context. Richard joue sur un Violoncelle N.F.Vuillaume de 1856.
Richard, a founding member of the Enso String Quartet is a native of New Zealand. He enjoys teaching
and playing on various series throughout North America. Much of his time is taken with the Enso Quartet,
touring and producing highly successful recordings. He is Principal Cellist of the River Oaks Chamber
Orchestra and a regular performer for Music in Context. Richard plays on a N.F. Vuillaume cello made in 1856.

Noah Bendix-Balgley est Premier Violon et Soliste du Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Lauréat du concours
Queen Elisabeth, promotion 2009 à Bruxelles, il a aussi remporté à Paris le 3ème prix et un prix spécial de
créativité, au concours du Long-Thibaud International, promotion 2008 ainsi que le 1er prix au concours du
Vibrarte International Music. Il s’est également vu discerner le 1er prix et le prix spécial pour la meilleure
interprétation de Bach à l’occasion du 14éme Concours International de Violon “Andrea Postacchini” à Fermo
en Italie. Noah Bendix-Balgley est un soliste reconnu par de nombreux orchestres en Europe et aux Etats-Unis
et particulièrement l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France (Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris) et l’Orchestre
National de Belgique. En Février 2014 Noah démarre une nouvelle étape de sa carrière en tant que 1er Solo
Konzertmeister pour l’Orchestre Philharmonic de Berlin.

Karin Bliznik a rejoint le Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra comme Trompettiste Principale en 2013. Avant de

Karin Bliznik joined the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra as Principal Trumpet in September 2013. Prior to
joining the SLSO, Karin held the Associate Principal position in the Atlanta Symphony as well as Principal positions with the Santa Fe
Opera, Charlotte Symphony, and the Charleston Symphony. Karin spent this past summer on faculty and performing with the Festival
Orchestra at the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado. Festival appearances include Spoleto, Aspen, Eastern Music Festival, Pacific Music Festival in Japan, and the Lucerne Music Festival in Switzerland under the direction of Pierre Boulez. She has also been a Fellow

He was born in Marseille in 1986 where he began dancing at the age of eight. He joined the Paris Opera Ballet School in 1999 and
entered the Paris Opera Corps de Ballet in September 2004. He has danced in many of the Paris Opera productions, namely Etudes
by Harald Lander, Giselle, Suite in White by Serge Lifar, The Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, La Bayadère, Don Quixote

Roberta Cooper a gagné le concours Artists International Competition dont l’organisme du même nom lui a
financé ses débuts dans la profession. Elle est membre du Walsh-Drucker-Cooper Trio qui se produit de façon
soutenue dans des séries majeures à Washington D.C, à la Nouvelle-Orléans et à New York ; trio parti depuis
peu à la conquête de l’Europe. Mme Cooper est la violoncelliste assistante principale de l’American Symphony
Orchestra, de l’American Composers Orchestra et du Westchester Philharmonic. On a pu la voir dans les
Philharmonics de Berlin et Brooklyn, le New York City Opera et les orchestres du NYC Ballet & de l’ABT. Durant

Roberta Cooper won the Artists International Competition which sponsored her Carnegie Hall debut. She is a member of the WalshDrucker-Cooper Trio, which performs extensively in Washington, D.C., New Orleans and New York City and most recently Europe.
Ms Cooper is the assistant principal cellist of the American Symphony Orchestra, the American Composers Orchestra and the
Westchester Philharmonic. She has performed with the Berlin and Brooklyn Philharmonics, the New York City Opera and the ballet
orchestras of NYC and ABT. Ms. Cooper has performed alongside harpsichordist Kenneth Cooper and the Berkshire Bach Society for

fois au niveau international. Elle a fait partie du Pittsburgh Opéra Orchestra et en 2011 elle a reçu la Médaille

Since 1970 Frances has lived part time on St-Barth. She co-founded and is president of the Saint Barth Music Festival. She is honorary
president of the Pittsburgh Chamber Music Society and former president of the Pittsburgh Symphony Association. For many years she

The new Principal Trumpet of Los Angeles Philharmonic, is Thomas Hooten. In 2000, Mr. Hooten earned

soloist. He acted as Principal Trumpet in the Atlanta Symphony from 2006-2012. Thomas has appeared as a soloist with the Atlanta

Robert Langevin is the Principal Flute of the New York Philharmonic. In May 2001, he made his solo debut with the Orchestra in

He began music lessons at the age of seven. He is a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and
won the Gee International Viola Competition. In 1985 he became Masao Kawasaki’s assistant at Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of
Music. He also earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy at Dartmouth College as well as a Malter of Music and Artist’s Diploma.
He came to the Berliner Philharmoniker from Ottawa, where from 1991-1995 he was associate principal viola of Canada’s National
Arts Centre Orchestra. He is a versatile musician, who also plays the guitar, makes arrangements and plays in the Berlin Philharmonic

Jeffrey Lyman has been on the faculty of the University of Michigan since 2006, and has earned a reputation as both an eminent

in the fall of 2012 recorded and gave the premier performances of a groundbreaking 50-minute work for 7 bassoons by New York
composer Michael Gordon. Also in 2012 he launched a publishing venture with TrevCo Music, and so far has issued 9 editions of
works for bassoon by the great French, Italian and German bassoon pedagogues of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the summer of
2013, he and his colleagues Nancy Ambrose King and Martin Katz recorded five classic duos and trios for oboe, bassoon and piano,

Sixteen year old, Alec Manasse became The 2014 First Prize winner of the International Clarinet Competition.
He is also the winner of various concerto competitions. He has performed chamber music at Alice Tully Hall and at Carnegie Hall. Alec
began his studies at 4 years old winning a full scholarship to the Special Music School in NYC, and is currently a Scholarship student
at the Juilliard Pre College. Alec has participated in the St.Barts Outreach Program performing for all the schools on the Island. This
season marks his continued devotion to the Island of St Barts and to the Festival de Musique.

Jon studied music privately from the age of six, and first came to world attention in 1997 when he won the
gold medal in the tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He subsequently toured as a soloist throughout the U.S., Europe
and Japan. He continues international touring and this past year gave two performances at the Beijing International Piano Festival.

Before joining the North Carolina Symphony, Brian Reagin was Assistant Concertmaster with the Pittsburgh
Symphony, under Music Directors Andre Previn and Lorin Maazel. He is the concertmaster of the North Carolina Symphony and of the
Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra. Reagin has performed recitals in Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Washington. He has toured
Japan, China, Canada and Puerto Rico and performed numerous recital and chamber works in Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. On
television he performed with Andre Previn and Yo Yo Ma, and the Claude Bolling Jazz Suite for Violin.

Marcus Roberts, Jazz pianist, lost his sight at age five. He won the Helen Keller Award for Personal Achievement (in 1998). He has

Eric is an internationally renowned French horn player whose solo career began at the age of twenty when
he was named the associate principal horn player with the Cleveland Orchestra. He has won several awards including first prize in the
1987 American Horn Competition, and the highest prize in the 1988 “Concours International d’Interprétation Musicale in France”. Eric
has performed as a soloist with many orchestras across America, including the Cleveland Orchestra and the Baltimore, Indianapolis
and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestras. He has been a Professor of Horn at Boston University since 1990.

He studied the piano and conducting at the Paris National Conservatoire. In 2004 he made his London debut at the Barbican

Violinist Sandy Yamamoto has dazzled audiences in concert performances around the globe for the past three decades as a soloist and
as a member of the Miró Quartet. Ms. Yamamoto has appeared with orchestras throughout the US and Europe to critical acclaim. With
the Miró Quartet, she has performed on the major concert stages of the world, regularly concertizing in North America, South America, Europe and Asia. She was a recipient of the Naumburg Chamber Music and Cleveland Quartet Awards, won First Prize at the Banff
International String Quartet Competition and was one of the first chamber musicians to be awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant.

Diplômé d’une licence et d’un master avec mention de l’université de Yale, Owen a été Violoncelle Principal
du Symphonique de Yale et Soliste pour sa tournée européenne en 1986. Il a été membre des Symphoniques
de New Haven et de Pittsburg, puis a rejoint le Symphonique de Boston en 1991. Ses interprétations ont été
enregistrées à la Radio Publique Nationale et il a souvent joué en concert avec l’auteur/interprète James Taylor.
Il est actif dans le projet STEP (un programme d’éducation pour cordes dédié aux étudiants de couleur).
A cum laude graduate of Yale University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees, Owen served as principal
cello for the Yale Symphony and was soloist for its 1986 European tour. He was a member of the New
Haven and Pittsburgh symphonies until joining the Boston Symphony in 1991. His performances have been broadcast on National
Public Radio and he has frequently played in concert with singer/songwriter James Taylor. He is currently active in Project STEP
(String Training and Education Program for Students of Color).
