The care taken in designing it helps take full advantage of the accuracy and reliability of the ESAO system with which the chamber will be used. This new model is used with the respiro or flowmeter sensor, which has already been used for experiments on the physiology of respiration. Principle ASSEMBLY WITH TURBINE AND RESPIRO SENSOR Exemples of probes (not supplied) Silicone joint CO2 probe Thermometer probe Straight connector Air/water oximeter probe Straight connector Flap closed Respiro sensor Turbine Straight connector Silicone joint allowing you to block the respiro sensor in good position on the turbine ASSEMBLY WITH FLOWMETER – VOLUMETER SENSOR Silicone tip Straight tip Straight tip ENGLISH 5 ESAO® Method Human metabolism chamber Ref : 453 078 1 Composition – implementation • 6 washable mouthpieces (exist under the Part no.: 453 009) + 2silicone joints • 2 Y shaped non-return check valves with 3 straight connectors • 3 flexible medical tubes • Measurement chamber including the legs and a folding stabiliser • Antibacterial filters. Revolving probe holder flap Expiratory air inlet‚ Sliding stabiliser 2 Installation – Commissioning • Slide the probe holder flap (light grey) to link the hole having the same diameter as the probe to the chamber hole • Insert the oxygen probe • Insert the turbine until it is in contact with the chamber • Insert the Respiro sensor until it is blocked by the turbine flange • Insert the pipe that will block the Respiro sensor • Carry out the installation as shown in the diagram. 3 Theory of operation The human metabolism chamber along with its accessories helps detect two quantities linked to exhalation: the volume of air exhaled and the concentration of oxygen in this air. ENGLISH 6 ESAO® Method Human metabolism chamber Ref : 453 078 3.1 Measuring the volume Only the exhaled air passes through the turbine (thanks to the non-return check valve at the mouth of the flexible pipe). When the air passes through, the blades of the turbine rotate proportionately to the volume exhaled. The speed of rotation proportional to the rate of flow is not taken into account here. The flowmeter sensor detects a drop in pressure proportional to the rate of flow and in the direction of the blast of air. 3.2 Measuring the oxygen concentration The chamber collects the exhaled air and then releases it (through the calibrated ports) after a delay which gives the probe enough time to measure the oxygen concentration. The position of the probe moves it away from the turbulence caused by the irregular passage of air and helps undertake fluctuation-free measurements. The combination of these two data in the computer enables us to know the subject’s oxygen consumption. 4 Technical specifications • Dimensions: 225 x 225 x 120 mm • Weight 680 g 5 Care and maintenance ATTENTION This chapter is important. Read it carefully to ensure safe operation of your equipment. 5.1 Cleaning Respecting hygiene is an important point when performing experiments. The human metabolism chamber was designed in a way that minimizes clean-up operations. However, certain rules need to be followed. • For every new subject: o • ENGLISH Change the mouthpiece After every use (group of experiments) o Remove the mouthpiece of the flexible pipe, turbine, chamber, non-return check valve and dip them into a tub containing a disinfectant. Let them dry before next use. Dakin’s solution may be used as disinfectant o Clean the chamber’s plug with alcohol. 7 ESAO® Method Human metabolism chamber Ref : 453 078 Note: • Do not use alcohol for the turbine • Do not dip the end of the probe into the disinfectant (rendering the probe unusable). Rinse it with running water. • Do not clean the Respiro sensor (it is not watertight). Furthermore, it is never in contact with the exhaled air. 5.2 Malfunctioning In case of a malfunction: • First check the connection of the adaptors to the ESAO console. • Check the proper positioning of the respiro sensor: It must be blocked by a stop on a stop bracket on the turbine, wedge it with the pipe. 6 After-Sales Service This material is under a two year warranty and should be returned to our stores in the event of any defects.
