Five itineraries have been worked out to make you discover easily the town of Mons and its
surroundings while you stroll along. Each itinerary takes anything between 2 and 4 hours
depending on how curious you are and how much time you want to spend.
1. From religious to civic power. From the town hall to St Waltrude’s Collegiate Church
through the Castle’s Square, you will discover the town’s places of power (civil, military,
then religious), which are rich in history, architecture and heritage.
2. Centuries of architecture. Throughout the centuries, Mons was embellished with
architectural treasures which gave a certain unity to the town as well as a diversity of
style: XVI century mansions, Renaissance-style town houses, examples of XIX century
industrial architecture and contemporary buildings.
3. Taking a different look at the town. Look at the town from a different angle: from the
shopping area near the railway station to the Messines quarter, a large area that was
comprised of partly disused workshops and warehouses until 1980.
4. Mons through its museums. During this tour, you will see the various museums and
noteworthy heritage of the town. Mons’ culture and history come alive in its folklore as well
as works in the Fine Arts Museum and Maison Losseau.
1. By car, on the highways of history. A circuit of some twenty kilometres after leaving the
town gates will delight those who love history and fine architecture. A sort of mystery tour,
studded with places for recreation and reliving the past, it will not fail to amaze and entice
you.
