Montréal, le 29 août 2013 – Le Mois de La Photo à Montréal, en collaboration avec la Fonderie Darling, présente
l’exposition Penelope Umbrico.

À l’occasion de sa 13 édition, Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal a invité le réputé commissaire britannique Paul Wombell à
articuler sa programmation autour du thème Drone : l’image automatisée. Du 5 septembre au 5 octobre 2013, vingt-cinq
expositions déployées sur différents sites transformeront la ville en une vaste exposition de photographie. Ce projet vise à
cartographier la relation en constante mutation entre l’appareil photo et le corps humain.
L’œuvre de Penelope Umbrico est une réinterprétation de
photographies vernaculaires trouvées sur Internet ou dans
des ouvrages imprimés. Dans ses séries Sunset Portraits
from 12,193,606 Flickr Sunsets on 4/25/13 (2013) et TVs
From Craigslist (2009-2012), elle suggère que ces images
anonymes, montrant d’une part des gens devant un
coucher de soleil et d’autre part des téléviseurs à vendre,
acquièrent une signification différente de celle voulue
initialement par le photographe ou l’éditeur. Ces images
ont développé une vie au-delà de leur affectation
première.
Née en 1957 à Philadelphie, Penelope Umbrico a
grandi à Toronto, et elle vit et travaille à New York. Elle
est titulaire d’une maîtrise en beaux-arts de la School of
Visual Arts de New York. Ses œuvres ont été présentées
dans des expositions individuelles et collectives,
notamment au Fotomuseum d’Anvers (2012) ; à la

Montreal, August 29, 2013 – Le Mois de La Photo à Montréal, in collaboration with the Darling Foundry, presents the
exhibition Penelope Umbrico.

For its 13 edition, Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal has invited renowned British curator Paul Wombell to develop an
exhibition program around his theme, Drone: The Automated Image. From September 5 to October 5, 2013, 25 exhibitions
deployed in different sites will transform the city into a vast yet coherent photography exhibition. This event will chart the
changing relationship between the camera and the human body.
Penelope Umbrico’s work is a reinterpretation of
vernacular photography that she has found on the Web or
in printed catalogues. In her series Sunset Portraits from
12,193,606 Flickr Sunsets on 4/25/13 (2013) and TVs
From Craigslist (2009–12), she suggests that these
anonymous images, one set depicting people standing in
front of sunsets, the other made for selling televisions,
have meanings different from those intended by the
photographer or the original publisher of the image. They
have a life beyond their original use.
Born in 1957 in Philadelphia, Penelope Umbrico grew
up in Toronto, and lives and works in New York. She
received an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New
York. Her works have featured in solo and group
exhibitions at the FotoMuseum in Antwerp (2012); The
Photographers’ Gallery in London (2012); the Aperture
