This speech constitutes a literally monument of Democracy, the political system towards which the whole world aspires nowadays. Democracy, as a word, a concept and as a specific form of political conduct, was first devised and practiced in the ancient city - state of Athens. The way for democracy had been paved by the legislative work of Solon (640-560 BC) and the progressive administration of Peisistratus (600-527 BC ). It was more thoroughly consolidated under Cleisthenes ( 570-500 BC ) and his constitutional reforms, and vindicated with the Athenian victories in the Persian wars (492-479 BC). At the end of the summer of 431 BC, following the first campaing of the Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens, Pericles was deputed to deliver the Funeral Oration over the fallen Athenians. We shall never know precisely what Pericles said, but it is thanks to the historian Thucydides (460-398 BC ) that we can read an imaginative re-creation of the Oration in his History : an impassioned and eloquent paean to Athenian democracy and all that it stood for. By this edition, going back to the roots of Democracy, we hope to contribute in preserving and transforming Democracy into an everlasting reality. Kaklamanis, following the proposal of the Member of Parliament Yiannis Kephaloyiannis in independent volumes in four languages, eatch volume including the ancient Greek text, under the supervision of Yiannis N. Papadakis, Dean of the Athens School of Fine Arts. The ancient Greek text of Pericles Funeral Oration as reproduced in the present publication is taken from the edition of H.S. Jones in the Oxford Classical Texts series: T HUCYDIDIS Historiæ (Oxonii, 21942). The new Greek text is that of Eleftherios Venizelos, taken from the edition of Dimitrios Kaklamanos (Oxford, 1940). The English translation is taken from the Loeb Classical Library edition by C. F. Smith : T HUCYDIDES, History of the Peloponnesian War (Cambridge, Mass., 1928). The French translation is that of Jaqueline de Romilly: T HUCYDIDE, La Guerre du Péloponnèse (Paris, 1962). The Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy is grateful to the Oxford University Press, the Liberal Club in Athens, the Harvard University Press and the publishing house Les Belles Lettres, Paris, for kindly granting permission to reproduce here the Greek text of Thucydides and the translations. - ðñïÝñ÷åôáé áðü ôçí Ýêäïóç ôïõ C.
