In 2001 ging zijn eerste kortfilm, ‘Framing and Unframing’, in première in Locarno. Andere opmerkelijke theaterprojecten, naast ‘A Map of the World’, zijn ‘Pravda’, ‘Murmuring Judges’, ‘The Absence of War’ en ‘The Vertical Hour’. In KVS werkte ze mee aan ‘Skieven’, ‘It’s my life and I do what I want’ en ‘Barakstad’. ENG about the performance ‘A map of the world’ by david hare David Hare doesn’t provide a straightforward route for audiences who navigate ‘’A Map of the World’’ (1982). In this extraordinarily clever, if erratic, comedy about the perilous intersection of literary esthetics, global politics and private lives, the author refracts a single story through two separate time frames and two different dramatic forms. Officially set at a Unesco conference on poverty held in Bombay in 1978, ‘’A Map of the World’’ unfolds simultaneously on a sound stage in present-day England, where a crew is filming an adaptation of a novel about the conference’s backstage events. Let the audience relax safely in the knowledge that it’s witnessing a debate between two brilliant men in Bombay, and suddenly the set will decompose in a cinematic dissolve: We’re no longer watching two dueling intellects but a pair of semi-literate actors impersonating them in a scene that’s twice removed from reality and certain to land on a movie studio’s cutting-room floor. If Mr. Hare’s ‘’Map’’ is a jigsaw puzzle, that fractionalization suits the content. The play is in part about conflicting points of view - about how reactionaries and leftists look at geopolitics, how journalists and novelists look at events and how the West and the Third World look at each other. ‘’It’s arrogant to look at the world through one particular perspective,’’ says an American television correspondent in Bombay - and yet nearly everyone does. Mr. Hare is an exception. While he may be a man of the left, he can see (and let us see) through other eyes. In fact, ‘’A Map of the World’’ contains one of the few convincing, even sympathetic, right-wing protagonists to appear in an English play since the Suez crisis. That man has been devilishly named Victor Mehta, lest anyone possibly mistake him for V.S. Naipaul. An English-educated Indian expatriate who now writes celebrated comic novels from his genteel Shropshire home, Mehta has returned to India to address the Unesco conferees. The diplomats of the emerging nations threaten a mass walkout, and no wonder. When he’s not ridiculing the revolutionary Third World in print, Mehta is a fount of acerbic commentary about Castro (‘’who won his battles by speaking whole villages to death’’), Mao (who ‘’ruined his credibility by marrying an actress’’), Marxism (‘’dictatorship’s fashionable dress’’), homosexuality (‘’the merest fashion’’) and the United Nations itself (‘’a palace of lies’’). His pronouncements are not presented as buffoonish rhetoric. Mehta is so literate and witty a spokesman for the mandarin right that he makes George Will (an American newspaper columnist, journalist, author and Pulitzer Prize-winner, best known for his conservative commentary on politics) sound like a beery populist. ‘’A Map of the World’’ is essentially a running debate pitting Mehta against Stephen Andrews, a young, idealistic English journalist who’s reporting on the Unesco conference for a ‘’left-wing literary magazine.’’ Their battle is as much personal as ideological, and each man accuses the other of shaping his beliefs to serve his private neuroses. ‘’You use the poor as a prop to express your own discontent, which is with yourself,’’ says Mehta to Andrews, before going on to explain that man’s enemy ‘’is not poverty, but self-delusion.’’ The journalist counters by accusing the novelist of projecting his own ‘’loneliness and despair’’ into his disdainful, detached world-view. ‘’You will never understand any struggle until you take part in it,’’ says Stephen. Although Mr. Hare sides with Stephen, he is just as concerned with the process by which all observers distort history. Neither Mehta nor Andrews seems to know the truth about the real-life Third World that exists right outside their plush, Westernized hotel; their respective writings, however politically and stylistically antithetical, undoubtedly ‘’dramatize’’ (and falsify) that reality with equal recklessness, much as screenwriters vulgarize Mehta’s novel in their adaptation. And who, if anyone, can know when personal considerations compromise any observer’s objectivity? As Mr. Hare’s plot would have it, both Mehta and Stephen are driven to debate by lust as well as by creed: a visiting American movie star has offered to sleep with the winning antagonist. Nor does that winner achieve his victory by intellectual prowess. A chance occurrence - a familiar accident of contemporary history - intervenes to anoint the victor and to mock both debaters’ polemical verities.
