in co-operation with presents La version française suit la version anglaise. 2015 Thomastik-Infeld Canadian String Orchestra University of Toronto, May 10 to 14, 2015 INVITATION TO AUDITION Musicfest Canada, “The Nationals” invites you to audition for the Thomastik-Infeld Canadian String Orchestra, an honour group for string players aged 14 to 24. Participating in the orchestra under Maestro Michael Gilbert will be an important and memorable event in your life. Please contact us if you have any questions. HOW TO AUDITION • Prepare the audition material as outlined below. Be sure that you have the etude for your instrument. • Record your audition (audio only) in a single take. See directions below. • Upload the recording to the Musicfest.ca website on or before March 1, 2015. AUDITON MATERIAL 1. Scales - The highest notes can be repeated to make it easier to fit the patterns. a) Three octave major scale (2 octaves for Double Bass) to be played in quarter notes at MM q = 96: ascending using separate bows in detaché strokes and descending in the pattern two separate, two slurred. b) Three octave minor scale in melodic form (2 octaves for Double Bass) to be played in eighth notes at MM q = 96: slurred in groups of four. 2. Technical Etude composed by Wayne Toews – play as much of the etude as possible. Partial performances are acceptable. See below. 3. Own choice - one or two pieces totaling not more than 5 minutes that will demonstrate your tone, intonation and musical interpretation. Do NOT use an accompanist for the audition recording. If your selection has a passage where only the accompaniment would play simply count one measure rest and continue. THE RECORDING Use recording equipment that will give a clear and accurate account of your playing. 1. Begin my stating your name, instrument then your city and province of home residence. 2. Record the material in the order given above in a single take. Give the name and composer of your own choice selection(s). 3. At the end of your own choice selection you are welcome to select ONE of the items (a scale, etude or own-choice piece) and re-record it. 4. Submit an audio recording, NOT a video recording. 1 UPLOADING YOUR RECORDING a) Visit the Musicfest Canada website at http://www.musicfest.ca b) Select “Login” found on the red navigation bar c) Select the “Orchestra-Applicant” link d) Enter your e-mail address and password e) Complete and/or edit your Registration Form. Make sure you complete all fields f) Click on the “Save” button You can access this form any time to add or change information. Those who are accepted must login again to complete the registration process. This is in addition to everything you have done before. INFORMATION ABOUT COSTS SPONSORSHIP/REGISTRATION FEE There is NO audition/registration/participation/ fee to participate with any of the honour ensembles. Thomastik-Infeld and Musicfest Canada underwrite the operating costs for conductors, music, rehearsal space, clinicians, guest soloists, musical equipment, technical staff and concert venue. The objective is to provide a special educational opportunity for Canada’s most outstanding young musicians. TRANSPORTATION to and from Toronto is the responsibility of each individual musician. Ellison Travel and Tours can make arrangements either by air, train or bus and they will find the lowest possible price. PARTICIPANT ACCOMMODATIONS for members, directors, and staff have been arranged at the University of Toronto - Victoria University Residence 140 Charles St. West Toronto, ON M5S 1K9. The Victoria University residences are dorm style with 1 single bed or 2 twin beds, dresser and shelf with shared common bathrooms in the hallways. There are no TV’s in the rooms however there is one in the common room on each floor. Linens, towel and facecloths are provided but shampoo and hair dryers are not provided. Internet is complimentary, however guests must bring their own Ethernet cables. The request for internet access must be made through the front desk upon check-in. Allow approx. 30 minute set up time. Members of the honour ensembles are encouraged to stay at the University of Toronto, but are not required to do so. Some members of the ensemble will be traveling with their own school ensembles and others are local students who already have accommodations in the area. For those wishing to stay at the University of Toronto, the cost is $375.00 for the week and the accommodations include a full, hot breakfast each day. Cheques should be made payable to Musicfest Canada and mailed to 311 Main St., Exeter, ON N0M 1S7 by April 10, 2015. Musicfest is subsidizing the costs to have participants reside close to the rehearsal locations. The residences have limited capacity so they are limited to members of the honour ensembles and can only be booked through the Musicfest Canada office. These arrangements are limited to six (6) nights only. If you would like to share room, make sure you indicate the other name when you register. If you require accommodations, please indicate so on your online registration record by April 1, 2015 so we can make the proper arrangements. If you have a preference for the person sharing the room, please indicate that on your online registration. Check In: Saturday, May 9, 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Check Out: Friday May 15, 11:00 a.m. 2 RELATIVE/FRIEND ACCOMMODATIONS If you have relatives from out-of-town who plan to stay in Toronto and would like to access the Musicfest convention rate, please contact Michelle Hern at Ellison Travel and Tours, 1-800-265-7022. These rooms are limited to parents, relatives and friends of participants of the Honour Ensembles. Those who are accepted into the Thomastik-Infeld Canadian String Orchestra will be notified and sent details about accommodation, schedule, etc. before March 30, 1915. BONUS All who are accepted into the Thomastik-Infeld Canadian String Orchestra can purchase Thomastik-Infeld Orchestra Strings (not guitar strings) at any location of Long & McQuade from the time they receive their acceptance until April 30th of the following year at a 25% discount. These strings are for their own personal use only. They must be willing to provide Long and McQuade with some basic information (such as name, address, and telephone number) so that they can be set up with an account identifying them as a member of the orchestra in order to register their discount. Gammes – Vous pouvez répéter la plus haute note afin de faciliter les coups d’archets. a) Une gamme majeur sur trois octaves (2 octaves pour les Contrebasses) jouée en noires à 96 bpm: en ascendante, tous les notes détachées et en descendante, deux notes détachées, deux notes liées. b) Une Gamme mineur mélodique sur trois octaves (2 octaves pour les Contrebasses) jouée en noires à 96 bpm: liées en groupes de quatre notes. 2. Une étude composée par Wayne Toews – jouez autant de l’étude que possible. Les versions incomplètes seront acceptées. Voir ci-dessous. 3. À votre choix - une ou deux pièces d’une durée totale de cinq minutes maximum qui démontre votre qualité de son, votre intonation et votre interprétation musicale. Ne utiliser PAS d’accompagnateur(trice) pour l’audition enregistrée. Si votre répertoire comporte un passage où seul l’accompagnement joue, veuillez compter une mesure de silence seulement avant de continuer jouer. L’ENREGISTREMENT Utilisez d’équipement d’enregistrement de qualité avec un son clair. 1. Commencez en disant votre nom, et ensuite présentez votre instrument ainsi que votre ville et votre province. 1 2. Enregistrez le matériel selon l’ordre décrit plus haut en une seule prise. Nommez le titre et le compositeur des œuvres choisies. 3. À la fin de vos œuvres choisies, vous pouvez réenregistrez un élément (gamme, étude ou une des pièces choisies). 4. Nous accepterons seulement les enregistrements de son (et non les enregistrements audiovisuel). TÉLÉVERSEZ VOTRE ENREGISTREMENT a) Visitez le site de Musicfest Canada au www.musicfest.ca . b) Sélectionnez “Se connecter” qui se trouve dans la barre de navigation rouge. c) Sélectionnez le lien “Orchestra-Applicant” d) Entrez votre adresse courriel et votre mot de passe e) Complétez et/ou éditez votre Forme d’Enregistrement. Soyez certain d’avoir rempli tous les champs. f) Cliquez sur le bouton “Save” Vous pourrez accéder à ce formulaire en tout temps pour y ajouter de l’information. Une fois accepté, vous devez vous connecter de nouveau au site Musicfest et finir le processus d'enregistrement. C'est en plus de tout que vous avez fait auparavant. INFORMATIONS À PROPOS DES FRAIS COMMANDITAIRES/FRAIS D’INSCRIPTION Il n’y a PAS de frais d’audition/inscription/participation pour participer aux groupes d’honneurs. Musicfest Canada et ses commanditaires absorbent les coûts d’opérations pour les chefs, les partitions, les lieux de répétition, les cliniciens, les solistes invités, les équipements musicaux, l’équipe technique et la salle de concert. L’objectif est de fournir une opportunité spéciale d’éducation pour de jeunes musiciens Canadiens exceptionnels. LE TRANSPORT Le transport sera la responsabilité de chaque participant. HÉBERGEMENT DES PARTICIPANTS L’hébergement est disponible pour les membres de l’orchestres, les directeurs, et d’autres personnels a la résidence Victoria de l’université de Toronto (140 Charles St. West Toronto, ON M5S 1K9) Les chambres à la résidence Victoria sont comprises d’un lit ou deux lits avec une garde de robe et une étagère. Les salles de bains partagés sont disponibles sur chaque étage. Il n’y pas de télévision dans les chambre, mais il y a une télévision partagée sur chaque étage. Les serviettes et les draps de lit sont fournis mais le shampooing ni les sèche-cheveux ne sont pas fournis. L’internet est disponible dans la chambre mais il faut apporter votre propre câble d’Ethernet. Il faut demander à la réception pour la configuration de l’internet (ca prendre environs 30 minutes avant d’avoir accès). 2 Les membres de l’ensemble d’honneurs sont conseillés à demeurer dans la résidence, mais n’y sont pas obligés. Certains membres de l’orchestre voyageront avec leurs groupes respectifs et d’autres seront des musiciens de l’endroit qui habitent déjà dans les environs. Pour ceux qui décident de rester à la résidence Victoria, il y a un frais de 375$ pour la semaine. L’hébergement comprend d’un déjeuner aussi. Musicfest subventionne les frais pour que les étudiants puissent résider près des lieux de répétition.
