Attention Students
Please know that online access to the iLrn homework is required for this
class. This means you will have to purchase the iLrn access from the campus
bookstore. There are many online vendors that offer different versions of
texts and different online homework products. I have seen students purchase
wrong materials with no ability to return for a refund. To make sure that you
are purchasing the correct content, please purchase from the campus
bookstore and start right away your online homework.
PREREQUISITES
French 101 has no prerequisites.
COURSE GOALS
This course is designed to introduce you to the French language and
cultures of French speaking countries. A variety of classroom activities
will help you to develop French language skills in four areas: listening,
speaking, reading, and writing. Writing and speaking activities will
reinforce and expand on the vocabulary and concepts presented in class.
You will compile and illustrate all your writing assignments in a
Portfolio. As the semester progresses, you will be able to comprehend
and communicate in French at increasingly complex levels. By the end of
the term you will be able to participate in basic everyday conversations,
understand short texts, and express yourself in writing at a level
consistent with the material covered. Remember that language is
communication not only including a combination of words but also
movements, gestures, eye contacts and tone of the voice. Have fun
and discover great facets of your ‘French Personality’!
Learning outcomes: students will be able:





To use writing, listening and speaking skills in a variety of small and large
group activities;
To ask questions and respond (oral/written skills) after viewing film
segments, simple reading or students’ presentations.
To express questions and personal perspective on specific reading/music/
piece of art (oral/written skills);
To practice appropriate grammatical points which include relevant
vocabulary (oral/written skills) ;
To start dialogue/letter/add about simple topics regarding each chapter’s
theme (oral/written skills) .

Note:
Do not be overly concerned when you make errors. It takes time and
practice to learn a new language. We are more interested in how you
dare to express yourself in French rather than how correctly you
can say it. Above all, enjoy yourself! Passion communicates much
more than words!
GRADE DISTRIBUTION:
- Participation: (10%)
Since attaining communicative competency is the primary goal of this
course, you must be willing and prepared to express and share ideas
with your instructor and classmates and to cooperate in any group
activities. Please arrive in class ON TIME. Tardiness is disruptive and
disrespectful both to your classmates, and to the instructor.
Participation means to be actively and cooperatively involved in the
classroom session. If you miss 4 classes, you will receive 80% of
participation points; 6 classes, 70% ... if you participate actively.
Please refer to the Calendar; absence or tardiness is not an acceptable
excuse for missing tests, or assignment deadlines. Know that it is
dangerous for your grades to miss more than one test.
If you miss a class, please let your instructor know the reason of your
absence. You will receive a ‘0’ participation for that day and ‘0’ for any
work done in class including test. Since you know when are the test
days (CALENDAR), no make up test will be available. Since you know
exactly what you have to study for the test (QUIZLET + Pre-test), the
lower score won’t be dropped.
