The starting point of my work is a photographic gesture operating on the border between material and virtual worlds. Videos, sculptures or silk-screen printings can also be the results of this process. For this purpose, I am doing analog shootings in different kinds of spaces; the field of these experiments evolves from natural landscapes to the studio, passing through screenshots, inside views of models or 3D visualizations. These resulting elements take on meaning by highlighting their analogies and dissonances in editings and displays. They reveal the trouble within the constant flow of images and aesthetic mechanisms that influence our understanding of reality. Through my work, I interrogate, the increasing delegation of the perception towards technology (satellites, drones, Google Street View), and the melancholy that rises from that extended vision of a world we can observe more easily but which is paradoxically more difficult to grasp. I use time and space as mediums, using framing, exposure, scale and printing to shape them. The images offer suspended narratives, intermediary spaces where the viewer is invited to investigate. My work revolves around the power of images to create a continual shifting, constructed, deconstructed and reinvented reality. Havana, May 2015. In the neighborhood called Vedado, some villas from the XX th century and the arrival of Americans on the island reinterpret the traditional colonial style, making it fit with the Caribbean lifestyle. Sometimes into ruins, the villas are however covered in vivid colors which allow them to resist to the passage of time. The starting point of this piece is the photograph of one of those villas. Being in construction, it was completely white and empty, noticeable in the middle of the colorful other villas. Its smooth surface and its pale curves were ready to receive the new painting, but still allowed the past layers of painting appear, like the testimony of a past splendor. The architecture there seemed in transition just as the country had been since the recent reestablishment of the diplomatic relationships with the United-States. Inside the exhibition space, the subject of the photograph recovers its pictorial dimension through a silk-screen printings frieze, glued directly on the wall. The image makes a gradient, repeats itself and fades progressively, like on the film of a movie, inside the memory of a travel or a time which only exists now through its vestiges. The camera turns around and describes the inside of an object built for that very purpose. It measures 150 x 170 cm, to be able to shoot inside easily and has been built in wood, plaster and painted concrete. It’s a kind of model, built on the memory of the ruin of a « kasbah » in the Sahara desert. Only used during the time of the shooting, it exists just through the camera capture which defines and transforms it. In this way, the camera finally pulls back and we can see the whole object, turning on itself. Depending on the viewpoints and the movements of the device, its scale changes and its status continuously oscillates between a mental projection, a model, a 3D view or a sculpture. Snapshots have always embodied the dream of freezing the flow of time and preserving a live memory of the trivial and the events that take place outside the frame of history. Due to the internet, the snapshot has become intangible, gaining a new plasticity and mobility, which rewrites its traditional codes. Because of its scope, this evolution changes in the same time as our relationship to images and our perception of the world. The focus of this text includes the conception, the diffusion and the circulation of the snapshots within internet’s ecosystems. Based on a theoretical analysis of the medium; portraits of emblematic figures who have pushed its boundaries and personal narratives, it attempts to measure the continuances and the breaks in the transformation of this practice, as well as its uses and its aesthetic. It interrogates the power and the limits of these images. Léa MERCIER Née le 29/05/1992 Place du Châtelain 14 1050 Ixelles-Bruxelles BELGIQUE tel.
