The Region Office has finally shaken the sands of Bahrain from its heels and is now firmly implanted in Dubai, leaving its old office to be taken over by the Region Training Centre. A new base has been set up in Qatar to cover our operations there and in Bahrain, and the base in Ahwaz, Iran, has been re-opened— for the third time— maybe this will be lucky one!!! The North Gulf D istrict have moved their office in Tehran as have the South Gulf District in Abu Dhabi. A new wireline base has also been set up in Abu Dhabi, just before bulldozers flattened our original base. Only the Arabian District has not caught the wanderlust evident in the Region at present and are still in Al Kobar and Hofuf. Une sorte de mouvement perpétuel à pied ou créant un perpétuel choc entre hier et demain My arrival at Bahrainditz was auspicious as I was the first inmate o f Flopetrol's excursion into maximum security training. Captured on the Ahwaz front I had been transported under the frightful conditions of Gulf A ir's Boeing type “ 40 Hommes, 8 Chevaux” . Ever mindful of an opportunity to escape, I tried the classic “ out the lavatory window” route, only to find to my cost, that some maniac was trying to hijack the plane by locking himself in there. He hoped the Captain would give way to his insane demands (he wanted to be flown to Paris) (he really must have been crazy) through humanitarian consider ations (several passengers had gone cross-eyed by now) and the ensuing keyhole conversations distracted me so much I didn't notice when we landed at Bahrain. There I was imme diately arrested by the Region Training Commandant, who snapped on the derbys and whipped me to a waiting vehicle, my screams of protest disappearing into the distance... As he amused himself on the journey over to the barrack block where I was to be incarcerated, by practising his syntactical litotes and hyperbole on my broken wit, he introduced himself as Robert Von Talbott, late bouncer at Mothercare and Father Christmas at Selfridges. He explained that though he did not necessarily agree with the orders he was given, he was duty bound to carry them out but I was to find nothing personal in his actions. He did admit however, that he in fact wrote his own orders, but this introduced a syllogistic inconsistency of such magnitude that his mind could not handle it, and he had to resort to sneering remarks on my physical condition (much weakened from many gallant attacks on the filet mignon in Ahwaz). This was too much for my exhausted state and I had to be thrown into my cell in a total daze. As I slowly recovered, I determined to explore by surroundings and discovered the barren halls of a second generation Mines o f Moria, cunningly disguised as a very comfortbale block of flats, lacking only such basic necessities as wall to wall women and room service. I discovered RTC Talbott casting plaster gnomes on the patio, and pointed out the passages in the Geneva Convention about the length of beds and reliable source of bedroom slippers. He remarked that occasional Red Cross parcels arrived and that I was lucky to get them, and directed me to a cool cabinet where I would find the latest offering. I'd no idea Lowenbrau was the German name for Red Cross, but then we learn something new every day. W hile I was tucking into the Red Cross goodies, saving the cans to make into tunnel ventilators and investigating the suitability of the bed fo r use as a trampoline to get over the wall, the second inmate was tossed through the door, by a tough looking individual known as Ali Karahi, wanted in over fifteen countries for such diverse crimes against humanity as riding a pushbike without a bell and for owning a car that did less than fifteen mpg. This was the second arrival at Bahrainditz— Chris White, shanghaied from a clip joint called the Sharjah Guest House. Together we filled in the next few days, removing furniture under the remorseless eye of Mary Clark, w ife of the Commander-in-Chief, putting up aerials for the secret radio, rumoured hidden under the exploding cooker; digging tunnels and painting hush-hush weapons labelled “ 600 PSI SEPA RATOR” . Our existence was enlivened by the arrival of The Man Who Cheated Death, Bob Jones, a lenged in his own time, but now transubstantiated back to reality and a paintbrush. Dropping in unexpected to breakfast was Steve Kendall, MER’s answer to Max Bygraves, delivered by the Commander-in-Chief himself— a truly magnaminous gesture at that time of the morning. Arriving even earlier, whilst normal men dreamed of cool pubs and golden bitter, came the Dynamic Duo of Geert and Dick, the Long and Short of Christian and Remy, and a rather doubtful candidate fo r field service, one Eric Evenat, who appeared to be about two years old. We could only assume that he could dismantle a Fisher Valve with the best of them. Rating his own personal chauffeur was Alain Evenat, the BTM, and family; this image of luxury was rapidly dispelled when they were shown to a spare cupboard! (well it was a big one). And so, after frenzied preparation, lost sleep and a diet of Bob Martins for the RTC, on Monday, 30th January, the first training course in Bahrain started, to a stimulating discussion seasoned with threats from the RTC, and a deep, involved, exciting lecture from the RM (that's what you told me to say Bob, isn’t it?). The course was on. That evening, the induction party was held. Guests of great bravery were Peter and Mary Clark, who had sampled the cuisine before, but things went very well. The trainees were much cheered, being so far from home, to meet some friends of the lovely Pushpa, for whom opportunity was taken to make a (belated) birthday presentation. Events continued apace until the early hours. A chorus of Sssssh’s greeted the morn, but Alain was unstoppable, and had us gruelling over hot handbooks the minute we stepped in the door. Fortunately we could face things on a solid breakfast, this traditional activity rapidly winning over our fellow-Europeans. They have since also been introduced to darts, draught W orthington E and stodgy puddings, all of which seem to have gone down pretty well. But a dark cloud loomed rapidly on the horizon— the dreaded Weekly Test. Fail two and the plumbed-in guillotine (surplus Devil’s Island) would take its toll. Sample question: What is casing? Sample answer: Checking both ends of the street before turning the joint over. So life continues on, Abid sharpens the guillotine with a gleam in his eye, and we all look to the day when we're let loose on the rest of you. Meanwhile, visitors to Bahrain can expect a comfortable room, some even with beds! Healthy exercise (helping dig a tunnel to the Gulf A ir Guest House opposite) and entertainment (the sight of the domestic staff’s dental equipment as they burn your dinner AGAIN). Full marks must go to Bob Talbott, Alain Evenat, Ali Karahi, Claude Daburon and the boys (boys???) fo r making things rur. so smoothly and paving the way for Bahrain to go from strength to strength in the future (OK lads, that'll be a case each for the plug...). (While the Author prefers to remain anonymous, we suspect that he is almost graduated from the University of Neasden and Ongar [UNO].)
