Wrestling Concludes Day One of Competition at Southern Scuffle
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Drexel wrestling team wrapped up day one of competition at the 2016
Southern Scuffle on Friday. Four Dragons advanced to the tournament's second day of competition,
including David Pearce, Franco Ferraina, Matthew Cimato, and Joey Goodhart.
Pearce started the day off with a 13-2 major decision over Gardner Webb's Philip Anderson in the
133 bracket. He would then go on to fall in sudden victory to Navy's Zachary Davis, 2-0. He is set to
face Jason Delacruz of Cal Poly in his first match tomorrow.
Ferraina picked up a 7-3 decision over Chattanooga's Cody Hill in the first round of championships
at 133, but then was halted with a pin by Cornell's Nahshon Garrett in his second match of the day.
He will take on Campbell's Drew Walker as competition resumes tomorrow.
Kevin Devoy Jr. started off strong at 141 with a win-by-fall over Michigan State's Matt Gudenau, but
then was edged 4-3 in the first tie breaker by Campbell's Lucas Stewart which sent him to the
consolations. In the first round of wrestlebacks, Devoy earned an 18-2 technical fall over Michael
Espinoza of Northern Colorado. However, he dropped a 3-1 decision in the third round of
consolations that eliminated him from competition.
Cimato has advanced the furthest of Drexel's squad, as he still remains in the championship rounds.
After receiving a forfeit in his first match, the 149-pounder picked up a 5-2 decision over Stanford's
Tommy Pawelski in the second round. He then went on to secure a 3-2 victory over Fredy Stroker of
Minnesota to advance to the round of eight. Cimato will take on Justin Oliver of Central Michigan in
his opening match tomorrow.
Goodhart started off the day with a 3-2 win over Central Michigan's Adam Robinson and then earned
another 3-2 decision over Dimitrus Renfroe of Michigan State in his second match. In the third
round of championships, Goodhart was halted by Minnesota's Michael Kroells after falling by a 10-4
deficit. The heavyweight will start the day off tomorrow against Gardner Webb's Boyce Cornwell in
the consolations.
Competition resumes tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. Flowrestling will continue to provide live video of
each match and live stats will be available via Trackwrestling. Links for both, along with a link to
