International Conference: From the foundation of Québec City to Present-Day Canada 16082008
The Department of Canadian Studies and Literary at the University of Silesia (Katowice, Poland), with
the support of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, announces the International
Conference on the topic of From the foundation of the City of Québec to Present-Day Canada 1608–
2008. Retrospections, Paths of Change, Challenges (De la fondation de Québec au Canada
d’aujourd’hui (1608-2008) : Rétrospectives, parcours et défis). The conference will be held between
October 8-11, 2008 in Ustroń (the South of Poland).
The main goal of the conference is to encourage reflection on factors shaping the national, historical,
cultural, and linguistic uniqueness of Canada, which is why the organizers of the Conference have set
out to indicate challenges in the face of which the Canadian society (including the Anglophone,
Quebecois, Acadian, indigenous peoples and immigrants) has been shaped; to define factors
responsible for the uniqueness of the Canadian socio-cultural imaginarium; to trace the evolutionary
paths of the sense of participation in a society divergent from those representing both the European
model and the model developed by the United States of America. In this framework, the Conference
participants will present their papers mainly focusing on:
-
identification of the milestones in the history of Canada,
-
problematization of the relationship between Quebec, Acadia, Anglophone Canada, the
indigenous minority as well as the immigrants and the concept of Canadianness, as perceived
by the members of each ethno-cultural group forming the Canadian society,
-
reflection upon the concept of the Canadian identity in the broad perspective of the history of
ideas,
-
depiction of Canada as a series of subsequent projects (either antagonistic or synergistic)
manifest in language, literature, historiography, as well as political and legal discourses.

The Department of Canadian Studies and Literary at the University of Silesia
Founded in 1993, the Department of Canadian Studies and Literary Translation is a unit of the Institute
of Romance Languages and Translation Studies of the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland. This
year, the Institute celebrates its 35th anniversary. The Department faculty consists of twelve members,
currently involved in a group project dedicated to postmodern Canadian literature.

Colloqe international : De la fondation de Québec au Canada d’aujourd’hui (1608-2008)
La Chaire d’Etudes Canadiennes et de Traduction Littéraire à l’Université de Silésie (Katowice,
Pologne), avec l’appui d’Affaires Etrangères et Commerce international Canada, annonce qu’elle
organise un colloque international De la fondation de Québec au Canada d’aujourd’hui (1608-2008) :
Rétrospectives, parcours et défis (From the foundation of Québec City to Present-Day Canada 1608–
2008 : Retrospections, Paths of Change, Challenges). Le colloque se tiendra du 8 au 11 octobre
2008, à Ustroń (le sud de la Pologne).
L’objectif principal du colloque est d’inviter les participants, provenant des universités canadiennes et
européennes, à la réflexion sur les facteurs qui ont décidé de la spécificité nationale, culturelle et
linguistique du Canada. On se propose de définir la constitution de la société canadienne
(canadienne-anglaise, québécoise, acadienne, immigrante, autochtone, etc.), l'originalité de son
imaginaire social et culturel, l'évolution du sentiment d'appartenance à une société distincte des
modèles européeen et étasunien. Dans ce cadre, les participants du colloque seront demandés de
présenter leur communications qui porteront, en particulier, sur :
-
la détermination des événements marquants dans l’histoire du Canada,
-
la problématisation de la relation « le Québec, l’Acadie, le Canada anglophone, les minorités
autochtones et immigrantes vs identité canadienne » envisagée du point de vue de chacun des
groupes ethno-culturels constituant la population du Canada,
-
la réflexion sur l’identité canadienne dans une vaste perspective de l’histoire des idées,
-
le Canada en tant que projets successifs : antagonistes voire complémentaires (convergents) :
dans la langue, dans la littérature, dans l’historiographie, dans les discours politique, juridique.

La Chaire d’Etudes Canadiennes et de Traduction Littéraire à l’Université de Silésie
Fondée en 1993 par le professeur Krzysztof Jarosz, la Chaire d’Etudes Canadiennes et de Traduction
Littéraire est rattachée à l’Institut des Langues Romanes et de Traduction qui célèbre, cette année,
son 35e anniversaire. L’équipe de la Chaire se compose de douze chercheurs et chercheuses
travaillant autour d’un vaste projet, la littérature canadienne postmoderne.
