Splendor In The Grass, le quatrième album de Pink Martini, paraîtra le 27 octobre prochain, sur étiquette
Audiogram. Cet album fait suite au populaire Hey Eugene! qui aura permis de concrétiser la place du petit
ensemble de 12 musiciens parmi les stars de la musique mondiale.
Splendor In The Grass a été enregistré à Portland (Oregon), au Kung Fu Bakery, par l'ingénieur Dave
Friedlander (Prince, The Decemberists). Sa réalisation a été confiée au trio composé du chef d'orchestre et
pianiste de Pink Martini, Thomas Lauderdale, de la chanteuse China Forbes et du collaborateur de longue
date (et muse du groupe!) Alex Marashian.
Interprété en anglais, napolitain, italien, français et espagnol, Splendor In The Grass est composé de neuf
chansons originales et de quatre reprises, dont trois collaborations dignes de mention: le légendaire
chanteur de ranchera mexicain (et autrefois amant de la peintre Frida Kahlo) Chavela Vargas interprète, à
90 ans bien sonnés, le classique d’Agustin Lara, Piensa En Mi; Emilio Delgado, le Luis de l’émission pour
enfants Sesame Street, s’offre un duo (multilingue!) avec China Forbes dans une reprise de la pièce Sing
de Joe Raposo; enfin, le correspondant en affaires judiciaires du réseau NPR, Ari Shapiro, effectue son
premier enregistrement en solo en interprétant But Now I’m Back. Soulignons aussi que Courtney Taylor
des Dandy Warhols joue de la guitare électrique sur la pièce titre.
« J’ai adoré travailler sur cet album! Je l'aime beaucoup et je pourrais très bien l’écouter
en boucle si ce n’était pas moi qui l’avais réalisé! Chaque chanson a une petite histoire
particulière. La Fantaisie pour piano à quatre mains de Franz Schubert, par exemple, a
directement inspiré de deux des pièces que nous avons écrites : And Then You're Gone,
chantée par China, et sa réponse, But Now I’m Back, interprétée par Ari Shapiro. Le solo
de sitar sur Tuca Tuca, joué par notre bassiste Phil Baker, a été réalisé sur l’instrument
qu’a utilisé Peter Sellers dans le film The Party, en 1968. New Amsterdam, composée par
le sans-abri aveugle Moondog (celui qui s'est habillé comme un Viking et s’est promené
sur la Sixième Avenue à New York pendant près de trois décennies!) est à mon avis la
plus belle chanson jamais écrite sur New York. D’ailleurs, pour les chœurs de cette pièce,
nous avons déniché à Portland une superbe chorale de jeunes, le Pacific Youth Choir. Je
ne saurais passer sous silence le fait que le chœur qui vient clore Sing est composé du
personnel du bureau de Pink Martini, du Royal Blues of Grant High School de Portland
(mon alma mater) et du personnel et des amis du maire de Portland, Sam Adams! » confie

Splendor in the Grass, Pink Martini’s fourth album will be released on October 27th on Audiogram. The
record is the follow-up to the band’s wildly successful 2007 release Hey Eugene! who crystallized the place
of the celebrated and beloved 12-piece little orchestra as international music stars.
Splendor In The Grass was recorded in Portland, Oregon at Kung Fu Bakery, by engineer Dave Friedlander
(Prince, The Decemberists) and was produced by Pink Martini bandleader/pianist Thomas Lauderdale, Pink
Martini lead vocalist China Forbes and longtime collaborator and muse Alex Marashian.
Splendor in the Grass is composed of nine original songs and four covers, with songs in English,
Neapolitan, Italian, French and Spanish. The album also features four guest stars: the legendary 90-year
old Mexican ranchera singer—and one-time lover of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo—Chavela Vargas
sings the Agustin Lara classic “Piensa En Mi;” Emilio Delgado aka “Luis” on the American children’s
television show “Sesame Street” duets with China in a multi-lingual cover of Joe Raposo’s “Sing;” NPR
justice correspondent Ari Shapiro makes his solo singing recording debut in “But Now I’m Back;” and
Courtney Taylor-Taylor of the Dandy Warhols plays electric guitar on “Splendor In The Grass.”
“From start to finish, I loved working on this album,” says Lauderdale. “I honestly love it
and could listen to it over and over. Each song is filled with references and back stories
and adventures,” he continues. “Franz Schubert’s ‘Fantasy for Piano for Four Hands,’ for
example, directly inspired two of the songs we wrote: ‘And Then You’re Gone’ sung by
China Forbes and its companion piece ‘But Now I’m Back’ sung by Ari Shapiro, who during
the day serves as justice correspondent for National Public Radio. ‘Tuca Tuca’—originally
sung by the great Italian singer Rafaella Carra—features a sitar solo played by our bassist
Phil Baker, performed on the actual sitar played by Peter Sellers in the 1968 film The
Party. ‘New Amsterdam’—composed by the blind homeless composer Moondog (who
dressed as a Viking and stood on Sixth Avenue in New York City for nearly three
decades)—is, in my opinion, the most beautiful song ever written about New York. We
found a most amazing choir of young people here in Portland called the Pacific Youth
Choir to record the chorus. Meanwhile, the chorus at the end of ‘Sing’ is comprised of the
office staff of Pink Martini, the Royal Blues of Grant High School in Portland (my alma
mater) and the staff and friends of Portland Mayor Sam Adams” confirmed Thomas
Lauderdale.
