As a developer of one of the world’s most highly-regarded desktop illustration
packages, Xara Group Ltd. was interested in adding PDF output capability to an
enhanced version of its Xtreme software product line. This required a PDF output
filter to be developed which Proteus Data Systems took on as a consulting
opportunity with Xara.

enterprise data transformation projects, implementing low-level routines for
document handling were determined to be impractical given the time to market.
To allow Proteus to focus on the task of transforming Xara’s metadata, sourcing
out a PDF library would be essential.
Following the evaluation of a number of libraries, the PDFNet PDF library was
chosen as a result of its extensive feature set, favourable pricing model and twotiered approach to its programming interface.”
Project Scope & Evaluation
“Developing a PDF output filter for a desktop illustration package presents a
number of unique challenges. PDF documents have traditionally been used for
creating data that is text-intensive with limited graphical content. Successfully
rendering an illustration to a PDF document demands an exacting degree of
precision and fidelity. In addition, as PDF documents are increasingly used for
exchanging graphical data between applications, editability is becoming critical.
While Proteus had successfully utilized a number of PDF solutions in other
contexts, the ability of these solutions to ensure the fidelity and editability of
complex graphical data was known to be quite limited. Many solutions were found
to be adequate for creating basic graphics primitives but the constructs within the
Xara Xtreme metadata were significantly more sophisticated. Successfully
capturing the integrity of an illustration would require covering virtually all of the
objects supported by the PDF standard and approximating those objects that did
not map directly.
In evaluating the PDFNet SDK, the two-tiered programming interface emerged as
the feature that made the library the obvious choice for this project. By exposing
both the low-level and high-level of PDF document abstraction, PDFTron had
uniquely positioned itself within the market. For developers like Proteus, this
approach would allow its engineers to handle fairly routine document-handling
tasks without a large investment in time while at the same time providing a
framework that would expose the underlying COS level of PDF for areas that
would require more context-specific coding.”
