A key figure in distribution Eight years after taking over Sochibo, the Group is cementing the merger of the subsidiary by integrating it into its Life Sciences division. The name Sochibo will disappear with the creation of a Cosmetic Ingredients/ Nutraceutics department within SaficAlcan France. For PCA it was the ideal opportunity to take a look at this new structure. F OUNDED IN 1847 as a trader in natural raw materials, in 1928 Safic-Alcan began to diversify into specialty chemicals distribution. Now with seven different subsidiaries across Europe (Italy, Portugal, Benelux, Germany and the UK), with an especially strong presence in Spain and France, the Group employs around 300 people. It is represented in India, and particularly in China where it acquired the FrancoChinese Bim Sifram Group, which specializes in sourcing exotic products for the pharmaceuticals industry, in 2005. Safic-Alcan also has minority holdings in the United States (Chemspec Ltd), Sweden (Safic-Alcan Nordica) and Australia (Safic Pacific). As No. 1 in the European rubber industry, Safic-Alcan leads the way in performance products such as thermoplastics, adhesives and mastics, polyurethanes, coatings and inks. At the heart of its development is the distribution, preparation and marketing of specialty chemicals for the rubber, paint, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. “We have started to see our growth level off somewhat in performance products.Obviously,we ● ● ● 1 6 7 - PA R F U M S C O S M É T I Q U E S A C T U A L I T É S - N ° 2 0 6 - AV R I L / M A I 2 0 0 9 DOSSIER - REPORT Profil - Profile ● ● ● autres opportunités possibles en Angleterre et en Italie » ● ● ● want to maintain our leadership in this area, précise V. Depuis, le département travaille avec une quinzaine de commettants (Eckart, Symrise, Showa Denko, Micro Powders, Lessonia, CAC, Herbarom, Alfa, Statfold, Sochibios, Air Products…). The group is also interested in product-based growth, on two levels: - development of pan-European distribution, the idea being that a supplier to Safic-Alcan in Italy, for example, become a Safic-Alcan supplier in all the other countries represented by the group, - search for new partners offering technological products. “We have an exclusive relationship with 85% of our suppliers, and have worked with some of them for decades,” adds Valérie Laseraz. It is a relationship of which the group is proud, based on trust and representing a long-term investment. This investment has reaped rewards, as Safic-Alcan now has a privileged relationship with a select network of suppliers including such major players in the chemical industry as DuPont de Nemours, Arkema, Evonik, Eastman, Rohm&Haas, SI Group, DSM, Cray Valley, Air Products and Flexsys. Transferring innovation to cosmetics Sochibo, which specializes in the distribution of pharmaceutical ingredients, was founded at the instigation of Synthélabo in 1963. It has a thriving cosmetics department, established relatively recently in 1998, which has seen growth of around 15% per year and works with fifteen or so partners (including Eckart, Symrise, Showa Denko, Micro Powders, Lessonia, CAC, Herbarom, Alfa, Statfold, Sochibios, Air Products). It owes its success primarily to its meticulous approach (R&D and testing on ingredients, quality distribution), so characteristic of the pharmaceutical industry. “In the merger with Safic-Alcan,our Cosmetic Ingredients and Nutraceutics Department (formerly Sochibo) retains this characteristic feature, which sets us apart from other distributors in cosmetics,” explains Marie-Laure Ferron Viollet, head of Cosmetic Ingredients and Nutraceutics. The department capitalizes on its cross-sector expertise, taking ingredients destined for pharmaceuticals and adapting them to the cosmetics industry. Two active agents that have thus been given a new pathway of development are Dextralip® 10C, an anti-inflammatory, and the Vitamin P-like agent Permethol, a veinotonic. “Thanks to the strong links we have forged with our 1 6 8 - PA R F U M S C O S M É T I Q U E S A C T U A L I T É S - N ° 2 0 6 - A V R I L / M A I 2 0 0 9 DOSSIER - REPORT Profil - Profile responsable du département. Création d’un nouveau laboratoire d’application partners,we have been given the opportunity to co-develop their ingredients, targeting active agents with strong potential. It is a gamble that has paid off,” says the head of the department. As the suppliers in question (Sephytal Pharma and PKC, for example) work in pharmaceuticals, they have little interest in the potential cosmetic applications of their products. In return for world exclusivity in the distribution of these molecules, the distributor itself invests in R&D, efficacy testing and formulation work, The Safic-Alcan stand at In-Cosmetics. before offering the ingredients to its clients in the beauty sector. Alongside this innovative strategy, the Cosmetic Ingredients department is considering a return to its roots in plant culture, developed in the era of Synthélabo Végétal and its renowned extraction plant based in Tours. It has thus also been collaborating with one of its partners, Herbarom, in the co-development and co-production of new natural extracts. “Our rigorous scientific approach does not prevent us from anticipating and following trends in the cosmetic sector,” explains Sandrine Romanet, head of Regulatory Affairs and Operational Marketing. “We actually have over twenty product lines already audited or certified by Ecocert and Qualité France, and we are set to expand our natural and organic ranges even further.” Dextralip® 10C : effet sur la sécrétion de PGE2 Effect on the secretion of PGE2 100 % % d’inhibition/of inhibition 100 82 % 80 60 37 % 40 29 % 20 0 0% own portfolio. “Obviously,we currently lack certain excipients and specialties such as waxes, titanium or thickeners so we are unable to produce 100% Safic-Alcan formulas,” admits ML Ferron Viollet. As a testimony to the lab’s work, several formulas were unveiled at the In-Cosmetics fair, including a tinted cream and a gloss, both organic, based on Lessonia’s Microzest 25 powders, and a refreshing slimming gel formulated with Dextralip® 10C and Permethol. New results The Cosmetics Department also used the fair as an opportunity to present the results of new tests on Permethol (INCI: Sodium Methylesculetin Acetate). Used in pharmaceuticals and toothpastes, it is a stable water-soluble polyphenol which improves the strength of blood capillaries. Two additional efficacy tests were carried out: - an in vitro study on the production of nitrogen monoxide by vein endothelial cells. Lowering the production of NO by these cells has a vasoconstrictor and hence veinotonic effect. Its performance has been compared to that of horse chestnut. The ingredient had beneficial applications in products for heavy legs, eye creams and slimming products. - biochemical analysis of its stimulating effect, in which the ability of Permethol to inhibit the activity of catechol-O-3methyl-transferase (COMT) was measured. Specifically, inhibiting COMT activity delays the catabolism of adrenalin. In view of this “neurocosmetic” effect, the ingredient may be used in anti-aging and complexion-boosting formulations. In another test, the anti-inflammatory effect of Dextralip® 10C was evaluated in vitro, compared to enoxolone. The release by human keratinocytes stimulated by a pro-inflammatory agent (PMA) was measured at different concentrations of Dextralip® 10C.The test revealed inhibition of PGE2 secretion by the active agent, this inhibition being dose-dependent.
