Il y a un peu plus de trente ans, on pouvait apercevoir pour la première fois à l’écran un
visage qui allait vite devenir une « gueule » du cinéma américain : une mâchoire saillante,
des yeux vifs… Tels sont les traits caractéristiques du jeune Stanley Tucci lorsqu’il se montre
pour la première fois dans L’Honneur des Prizzi. Être dirigé par le grand John Huston pour
ses premiers pas en tant qu’acteur est un privilège rare, et il ne faudra que peu de temps au
comédien en herbe pour se faire remarquer et s’imposer dans le paysage
cinématographique. Avec plus de quatre-vingts films à son actif, il est passé maître dans l’art
d’incarner les personnages les plus sombres, tantôt assassin dans L’Affaire Pélican de Alan
J. Pakula, tantôt tueur en série dans Lovely Bones de Peter Jackson, mais aussi procureur
véreux dans Kiss of Death de Barbet Schroeder ou encore gangster dans Les Sentiers de la
perdition de Sam Mendes. Tout récemment, on a pu le voir interpréter avec brio un avocat
en quête de vérité dans Spotlight de Tom McCarthy. Loin de se cantonner aux drames, il
explore aussi des registres plus légers et révèle son potentiel comique dans des films comme
Le Terminal de Steven Spielberg ou Harry dans tous ses états de Woody Allen.
Le Festival du Cinéma Américain lui rendra hommage, en sa présence.
A little over 30 years ago, a face first appeared on screen that would soon become one of the
most recognizable in American cinema. A strong jaw and a pair of bright eyes were the
characteristics of the young Stanley Tucci when he made his big-screen debut in Prizzi’s Honor.
Being directed by the great John Huston for one’s first outing as an actor is a rare privilege,
and it didn’t take long for this newcomer to make his mark and carve out a space for himself
in the movie world. With more than eighty film credits, Tucci is a master of the art of portraying
dark characters, from an assassin in The Pelican Brief by Alan J. Pakula to a serial killer in Lovely
Bones by Peter Jackson, from a corrupt prosecutor in Kiss of Death by Barbet Schroeder to a
gangster Road to Perdition by Sam Mendes. More recently, he put in a dazzling performance
as a lawyer in search of the truth in Spotlight by Tom McCarthy. But his talent goes beyond
drama, having explored lighter registers that reveal his comic talent in films like The Terminal
by Steven Spielberg and Deconstructing Harry by Woody Allen.
The Deauville American Film Festival will pay tribute to him, in his presence.
