Statement
Buy 1, Get 1 Free was started in 2012, during my
time in the US. At first, it was motivated by a
desire to collect American objects that only exist
there. Walking along the shelves in supermarkets and stores, I soon caught sight of all those
things I had seen only in films or on screens. Such
as the Kit-Kat Clock seen in Honey I shrunk the
kids, the yellow notepad that is used as a logo for
the notes app on MacBooks, or the Composition
Book which I remembered from an old tv show I
watched as a kid.
Plot
Buy 1, Get 1 Free is a video installation consisting in
a series of twelve fragments of only a few seconds running in a loop. It shows iconic objects,
floating in the air and spinning, at night in various
locations. Buy 1, Get 1 Free is usually exhibited with
a display of several monitors but also exists as a
traditional film or animated GIFs.
All those things, though rather ordinary and familiar for American people, were a huge deal for
me as I enjoyed so much recognizing, touching
and buying them. Sometimes, they would turn out
rather disappointing or surprising : they had been
distorted by the screen. I had imagined them larger or less heavy, I thought they’d be elegant and
they turned out to be cheap junk.
Buy 1, Get 1 Free est une installation vidéo composée d’une série de 12 courts fragments de
quelques secondes et présentés en boucles. Ils
montrent des objets iconiques, flottants dans
le vide et tournants sur eux-même, la nuit, dans
divers lieux urbains. Buy 1, Get 1 Free est habituellement exposé grace à plusieurs moniteurs vidéos
alignés (ou petites vidéo-projections), mais existe
également sous forme d’un film et de GIF animés.
The purpose of Buy 1, Get 1 Free was to make
these objects mine and to develop a process in
which I could use them myself in films. They are
shown spinning in space as a means of description, it allows the viewer to observe them in all
their aspects since they are free of any narrative
purposes.
But they are also shown floating in the air, with
ordinary environment as backgrounds – those I
saw daily while I was in Cinnacinati, such as the
street I lived on, the stairwell in my building, the
long route to the University –. As a consequence,

they seem to assume a magic and almost mystical signification. They appear like hallucinations
in the night. In fact, the camera is held at arm’s
length which creates a sort of contrast with the
neutrality of the process : the presence of the
person filming those mirages can be felt. From all
this, strange moments abruptly arise. Gradually
those objects become abstract substances.
Buy 1, Get 1 Free is also a series that is regularly
brought up to date with new floating objects.

Initié en 2012, lors de mon voyage aux États-Unis,
Buy 1, Get 1 Free est d’abord motivé par l’envie de
rassembler des objets américains qui ne me semblaient exister que là-bas. En marchant à travers
les rayons de supermarchés, j’ai très vite reconnu ces objets que je n’avais vu jusqu’alors qu’à
travers l’écran. L’horloge en forme de chat (Kit-Kat
Clock) aperçue dans Honey, I shrunk the kids, le
bloc-note jaune (Legal Pad) transformé en logo
représentant la fonction bloc-note sur les ordinateurs Mac, ou le cahier d’école (Composition book)
que je reconnaissais d’une obscure série télévisée
de mon enfance. Autant d’objets, plutôt anodins et
familiers pour les américains, que j’avais un plaisir
immense à reconnaitre, toucher et acheter. Parfois
ceux-ci s’avéraient décevants, ou me surprenaient ; ils avaient été déformés par l’écran ; je les
imaginais plus grand ou plus légers, je les croyais
élégants et ils se révélaient bon-marché.
L’idée derrière Buy 1, Get 1 Free était de m’approprier ces objets et de faire le chemin inverse à
celui de leur découverte, en mettant en scènes

ces objets à mon tour.
Ils sont représentés tournants sur eux-même
comme un moyen de les décrire, de pouvoir les
observer dans leur intégralité : ils sont extraits du
dispositif narratif. Le fait qu’ils flottent dans le vide,
au milieu d’environnements banals (ceux de mon
quotidien lorsque je vivais dans l’Ohio : la rue, la
cage d’escalier, la longue route en direction de l’université), leur donne un statut magique. Ils apparaissent comme des hallucinations au milieu de la nuit.
La caméra qui les filme est tenue à bout de bras, et
contraste avec la neutralité du dispositif : on devine
la présence de celui qui filme.
Buy 1, Get 1 Free est une série régulièrement mise à
jour, avec de extraits vidéos montrant de nouveaux
objets.
