During this eucharist we offer with bread and wine which human hands have made, the greatest gift we have to offer : the life of our brothers and sisters, whom we have known and loved, and in whose life we have been involved. And we pray to our Father that he will accept our offering and raise up our brothers and sisters, victims of the airplane-crash, with his Son in glory. It was this hope already which inhabited Gamaliel’s heart in the first reading. Probably this man did not believe yet in Jesus Christ the Son of God, nor in his resurrection from the dead, but he understands that finally all the events of history are in the hands of God, and that even those which puzzle us most are ultimately submitted to God’s Providence, the only one who is able to redeem everything. That is why he wisely advises those who share his faith not to fight against what appears to be a dissident faction in Judaism, and to let God manifest the purpose that he pursues through the shattering events of Jesus’ sentence to death and through the emergence of the Christian community. We do not now understand the meaning of what happened in the crash of that plane. We will, as usual, try to determine the human causes of this tragedy through an investigation. But as Christians, with the eyes on Jesus crucified and risen from the dead, in an almost blind, although so brightly enlightened faith, we are invited to accept that this tragedy, like many others, will reveal its meaning, even if we cannot understand it now. Amen. Alleluja! + André-Jozef Léonard, Aartsbisschop van Mechelen-Brussel
