In one part of the scene, a pair of birds are looking at each other near a balustrade that is decorated with vases and partially covered with flowers and foliage. In the background is a picturesque garden and the silhouette of a Roman temple. On the other side of the vase is an English-style garden with an ornamental lake in the center. The decor of this vase evokes the gallant leisure of the comfortably wealthy during the 18th century, pursuing amusement in an enchanting natural setting and being given over to the games of seduction. The pair of birds symbolize a gallant couple, and the temple is reminiscent of the temple of Cupid, representing pleasure and romantic encounters. The gilded, scrolling handles are decorated with geometric patterns, foliage, and imitation turquoise. Signed: CH. Viller.
