Même s’ils découvraient les routes ô combien difficiles du Rallye MonteCarlo, les deux équipages de la Peugeot Rally Academy ont parfaitement
négocié ce premier rendez-vous de la saison mettant à l’honneur leur
statut de lauréats de la 208 Rally Cup 2015. Bien aidés par leur redoutable
208T16, José Antonio Suarez et Candido Carrera terminent l’épreuve
monégasque au sixième rang du WRC 2. Jordan Berfa et Damien Augustin
ont signé des débuts fracassants avec leur 208R2 en remportant la
catégorie RC4 et en terminant sur la deuxième marche du podium en WRC
3.
Alors qu’ils débutaient leur campagne mondiale au sein de la Peugeot Rally
Academy, José Antonio Suarez et Candido Carrera vivaient une première
étape animée. Disputées de nuit, les deux spéciales inaugurales se révélaient
délicates. Victime d’une crevaison dès l’ES1 et gêné par le concurrent qui le
précédait dans l’ES2, l’équipage espagnol ramenait la 208T16 à Gap en
sixième position.
Le lendemain, Jose Antonio et Candido ne commettaient pas d’erreur tout au
long de la deuxième étape disputée sur des spéciales aux conditions
d’adhérence changeantes, ils concluaient la journée au septième rang.
Au cours de la troisième journée de course, l’équipage phare de la Peugeot
Rally Academy passait par toutes les émotions ! D’abord ralentie par une
légère sortie de route au premier passage de la terrible spéciale ‘Lardier et
Valenca-Faye’, longue de 51,55 km, puis par une crevaison lors de la seconde
boucle sur cette même spéciale, la 208T16 s’imposait ensuite à deux reprises
en WRC 2 dans ‘Saint Léger les Mélèzes - La Bâtie Neuve (avec deux sixièmes
temps scratch au général) à la faveur d’un choix de pneumatiques judicieux.
Jose Antonio et Candido continuaient leur démonstration dans l’ES suivante,
‘Sisteron-Thoard’ un monument du Monte-Carlo, en réalisant le deuxième
chrono et ce, malgré un tête à queue.
Enfin, pour la dernière étape, les deux hommes se permettait même de signer
le meilleur temps dans la spéciale mythique du Col de Turini pour rejoindre
Monaco au sixième rang final et en ayant parfaitement respecté les consignes
fixées par l’équipe au départ de l’épreuve tout en remportant 3 spéciales !
Pour sa première sortie en tant qu’équipage officiel, le tandem Jordan Berfa,
Damien Augustin se distinguait lui aussi. Au volant d’une 208R2 référence de
la catégorie RC4, Jordan Berfa prenait la tête de la classe et la deuxième
place du WRC dès l’ES3 pour ne plus la quitter !
Malgré quelques aléas inévitables lorsque l’on découvre cette épreuve
mythique (tête à queue, petites fautes), Jordan et Damien géraient
parfaitement leur course, s’offrant même le luxe de remporter une spéciale au
nez et à la barbe de concurrents évoluants pour certains aux commandes de
voitures appartenant à la classe R3, et bien plus puissantes.
A noter également la présence de trois 208R2 dans le top 5 du WRC3 avec la
troisième place de Fabio Andolfi et la quatrième position de Damiano De
Tommaso.

Jose Antonio Suarez : « Pour mon premier Monte-Carlo, je suis très content
du résultat. Les conditions étaient très difficile tout au long du week-end avec
des spéciales à l’adhérence variable d’un bout à l’autre. Mon objectif était de
rallier l’arrivée, il est atteint. J’ai emmagasiné beaucoup d’expérience tout au
long de ces 4 jours, c’est important pour la suite de la saison. » Jordan Berfa : « Avant le départ, je ne pensais pas être à cette place ! Je suis
ravi car nous avons bien respecté les consignes. Nous avons bien travaillé
avec toute l’équipe de la Peugeot Rallye Academy notamment pour le choix
des pneumatiques et ça s’est avéré payant. Ce rallye est très long et difficile,
c’est une sacrée expérience. Nous avons pu creuser l’écart samedi et nous
nous sommes contentés de gérer sur la dernière étape pour obtenir ce beau

2016 FIA WRC: a successful debut for the Peugeot Rally Academy!

Despite this being their first attempt at the notoriously complex Rallye
Monte-Carlo, both Peugeot Rally Academy crews came through their first
outing of the season with flying colours and lived up every bit to their
status as last year’s 208 Rally Cup winners. Ably assisted by their 208T16,
Jose Antonio Suarez and Candido Carrera reached the Principality in sixth
place in WRC2, while Jordan Berfa and Damien Augustin steered their
208R2 to a resounding victory in the RC4 class in addition to coming
second in the WRC3 classification.
The first stages of Jose Antonio Suarez and Candido Carrera competing in the
colours of the Peugeot Rally Academy were Thursday evening’s two nighttime tests which proved particularly delicate. After picking up a puncture on
SS1, they lost time when they caught another crew on SS2 and they were
provisionally sixth in their class when they parked up their 208T16 that night
in Gap.
The following day (Friday), Jose Antonio and Candido put in an error-free run
in spite of the constantly shifting grip to end the leg in seventh spot.
Saturday’s action saw the Peugeot Rally Academy pair lose time with an ‘off’
on the awesome ‘Lardier et Valença-Faye’ stage (SS9, 51.55km) and then still
more with another puncture on the repeat visit to the marathon test.
However, they put their 208T16 at the top of the WRC2 timesheets on both
attempts at ‘Saint Léger les Mélèzes - La Bâtie Neuve’ helped by smart tyre
choices which earned them the sixth fastest time overall on both occasions.
Jose Antonio and Candido rounded off the day with the second-best effort on
the Rallye Monte-Carlo classic ‘Sisteron-Thoard’, despite reporting a spin.
To conclude their week in style, the Spaniards were fastest in WRC2 over the
famous Col de Turini stage before reaching the finish in the Principality in
sixth place.
Meanwhile, Jordan Berfa and Damien Augustin celebrated their first event of
the year in their 208R2 - the car to beat in its class - by easing into the RC4
lead and into second spot in WRC3 after SS3. They then defended those
positions until the end!
Despite making one or two errors which were to be expected of a crew
competing on the legendary Rallye Monte-Carlo for the very first time, Jordan
and Damien put in a perfectly-paced performance and even took one stage
win ahead of competitors in more powerful R3 machinery.
The final WRC3 standings featured three 208R2s in the top five thanks to
Fabio Andolfi (3rd) and Damiano De Tommaso (4th).
What the drivers said:
Jose Antonio Suarez: “I’m thrilled with this result for my first ever attempt at
the Rallye Monte-Carlo. The conditions were extremely difficult all weekend,
including stages where the grip kept changing from start to finish. Our aim
was to reach the end and that’s what we did. I picked up lots of experience
along the way over the four days, and that’s important for the rest of the
season.”
Jordan Berfa: “I never imagined before the start that I would score such a
good result. What’s even more pleasing is that we followed our instructions
to the letter. All the good work with the Peugeot Rallye Academy paid off,
notably with regard to tyre choices. It was a long, hard event and great
experience. We managed to pull out a gap on Saturday and then control the
situation on the final day.”

LA PEUGEOT RALLY ACADEMY A L’EPREUVE DU WRC !
Pour sa quatrième année d’existence, la Peugeot Rally Academy rejoint les
rangs du Championnat du Monde des Rallyes FIA (WRC). Composée des
équipages José Suarez - Candido Carrera (Peugeot 208T16 - WRC 2) et Jordan Berfa - Damien Augustin (Peugeot 208R2 - WRC 3), la Peugeot Rally
Academy entame une nouvelle aire avec ses deux jeunes équipages transfuges de la 208 Rally Cup.
Première des cinq manches mondiales auxquelles prendra part l’équipe, le
‘Monte-Carlo’ est le plus prestigieux des rallyes. Tracés autour de Gap et dans
l’arrière-pays niçois, ce sont près de 380 kilomètres de spéciales qui attendent les 92 équipages inscrits. Caractérisée par des routes asphaltées
souvent rendues piégeuses par les conditions météorologiques hivernales,
cette épreuve est un immense défi pour José Suarez et Jordan Berfa. Difficulté
supplémentaire pour les deux lauréats de la 208 Rally Cup 2015, c’est la première fois qu’ils participent à la classique monégasque.
Vainqueurs de la 208 Rally Cup l’an passé, José Suarez et Candido Carrera
ont pu découvrir leur 208T16 dans des conditions typiques du Monte-Carlo au
cours d’une séance d’essai réalisée la semaine dernière. A l’issue de celle-ci,
l’Espagnol se montrait plutôt satisfait : « A l’aube de cette saison, je suis heureux d’intégrer les rangs de la Peugeot Rally Academy ! Cette nouvelle étape
dans ma carrière est très importante et je suis motivé comme jamais. Nous
avons pu tester la 208T16 sous la neige et la pluie et je suis en confiance
grâce aux bons réglages que l’équipe a définis. Bien sûr, j’ai beaucoup de
choses à apprendre car ce sera ma deuxième course au volant d’une R5 mais
j’espère tout de même bien figurer parmi les 15 pilotes au départ en WRC 2. »
Au volant d’une 208R2 qu’il maîtrise parfaitement après deux saisons passées
au sein de la 208 Rally Cup, Jordan Berfa est impatient d’en découdre dans la
catégorie WRC 3, riche de 9 engagés dont 5 aux commandes de 208R2 : « L’équipe nous a permis d’effectuer nos premiers tours de roues sur la neige
avec la 208R2. Mon objectif pour cette première épreuve est de figurer au plus
haut du classement en WRC 3 même si je suis conscient qu’il ne faut pas faire
d’erreur et rester très concentré car c’est un rallye très long et l’un des plus
difficiles au monde. »

WRC ACTION FOR THE PEUGEOT RALLY ACADEMY!
Year 4 of the Peugeot Rally Academy will mark the start of a new era for
the squad as last year’s 208 Rally Cup front-runners José Suarez/Candido
Carrera (Peugeot 208T16, WRC2) and Jordan Berfa/Damien Augustin (Peugeot 208R2, WRC3) face a programme of selected FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) rounds in 2016.
The first of the team’s five scheduled world class outings will be the most
prestigious of the calendar, namely the Rallye Monte-Carlo which visits the
Alps near Gap and the mountains that tower over the French Riviera. The 92
crews on the entry list face almost 380 competitive kilometres which promise
to deliver their usual cocktail of tricky wintry conditions.
In addition to the immense challenge inherent in the event itself, the 2015 208
Rally Cup victors José Suarez and Jordan Berfa face the added difficulty that
this will be their first attempt at the classic fixture.
José Suarez and his co-driver Candido Carrera got their first opportunity to
sample their 208T16 in typical Monte Carlo conditions at a test last week after which the Spaniard appeared quite pleased: “It’s great to be joining the
Peugeot Rally Academy this season. It’s an important step in my career and I
couldn’t be more fired up! Last week, we were able to test the 208T16 in snow
and rain and I feel very confident with the set-up the team has found. I’ve obviously got a great deal to learn because the Monte will only be my second
drive in an R5 car. There are 15 drivers on the WRC2 entry list but I’m still hoping for a good result.”
Jordan Berfa will contest the event in a 208R2, a car with which he is now
familiar after two campaigns in the 208 Rally Cup. He is eager to get his
WRC3 programme rolling and square up to the eight other drivers entered in
the WRC3 class, four of whom will be in 208R2s: “The team gave us an opportunity to get our first run on snow in the 208R2. My aim on my first event
this year is to figure at the sharp end of the WRC3 standings but that will require staying out of trouble and being completely focused from start to finish,
because the Monte -Carlo is a very long event and one of the toughest in the
world.”
