One can, for example, distill salt water or dyed water with this apparatus. This device is suitable for working with low volumes and it is equipped with a selfcontained water supply that does not require water circulation. The device is transparent, thus permitting the observation of the phenomena taking place (boiling, condensation, etc.). 4 5 3 6 7 2 1 Photo 1 1 – Silicon stopper with channel 2 – Borosilicate glass 3.3 elbow tube. 3 – Burn protection sheath. 4 – Cooler lid. 5 – Transparent cooler body. 6 – Bottom of cooler. 7 – Rubber sealing stopper. Table 2 ENGLISH 5 Laboratory equipment School laboratory still Ref : 713 076 2 Characteristics and setup 2.1 Characteristics The device consists of a borosilicate glass 3.3 elbow tube equipped with a self-contained water supply (without circulation), which functions both as the distillation column and the cooler. Simple, low volume distillations can be performed with this practical system, without having to have a water supply nearby. The temperature of the water supply increases as the distillation progresses. The vapors condense as long as the temperature of the water supply remains lower than the boiling temperature of the solvent. A volume of distillate from 10 to 30 ml can be distilled with this apparatus. 2.2 Use precautions This apparatus is designed to provide an introduction to the technique of separation by distillation. It is not suitable for activities requiring high separation performances. Do not distill products containing hazardous materials (toxic or corrosive chemicals, etc.) with this apparatus. This apparatus is designed for simple distillations of mixtures or solutions in the aqueous phase only. Due to the inflammable vapor emission hazard, the safety of the user is not guaranteed if this apparatus is used to distill organic compounds or mixtures. Never leave this apparatus unattended while it is distilling. Work on a level, stable surface. Always make sure that the still is properly attached with a clamp to a stand or to a heating apparatus equipped with a rod. When the distillate stops flowing, it means that the temperature of the selfcontained water supply is too high to condense the vapors produced in the boiler. At this point, turn off the heat supply to the apparatus to avoid overheating it. 2.3 Heating The still can be used with an electric heating device (electric burner, flask heater, hot plate, etc.), a Bunsen burner or an alcohol burner. Be careful not to expose the plastic parts to the Bunsen or alcohol burner flame, or to the radiance of the electric burner. In case of a too long heating, the transparent body of the cooler (Figure 1-5) may lightly soften. If need be, turn the heating device off and let the lab still refresh (to ambient temperature) until the cooler’s body become harder. ENGLISH 6 Laboratory equipment School laboratory still Ref : 713 076 2.4 Setup and use Remove the cooler lid and fill the cooler with tap water (Figure 3). Replace the lid. Attach the still to a 100 ml borosilicate glass 3.3 boiler or erlenmeyer flask (Figure 3). Figure 3 Secure the still to a stand or to the rod on a heating device with the aid of a clamp. (Photo 4). Photo 4 Proceed with the distillation and collect the distillate in a suitable container. Turn off the heat to the apparatus as soon as it stops producing distillate. ENGLISH 7 Laboratory equipment School laboratory still Ref : 713 076 3 Maintenance 3.1 Disassembly The « school » laboratory still may be entirely disassembled. However, the tightness of the joint between the bottom of the cooler (Figure 1-6) and the cooler’s body (Figure 1-5) is due to a silicone adhesive covering. We recommend you not to strip the cooler’s bottom and body apart during cleaning operations in order to preserve the tightness of the cooler. 3.2 Cleaning The parts of this apparatus should be cleaned with soapy water. Never use organic solvents, as they may damage the plastic parts. If necessary, mineral deposits may be removed from the apparatus with a dilute ethanoic acid or vinegar solution. 3.3 Tightness If you notice leaks between the bottom of the cooler (Figure 1-6) and the body of the transparent cooler (Figure 1-5), disassemble both elements and remove the remaining silicone adhesive covering. Apply running-in grease or siliconebased mastic and assemble both elements again. 4 Accessories The still should be used with a 100 ml borosilicate glass 3.3 boiler or erlenmeyer flask. 100 ml borosilicate glass 3.3 flat-bottom boiler flask.
