International Conference on Avian Influenza in Humans:
Recent Developments and Perspectives

The second edition of Paris Anti-Avian Influenza 2007, will take place at the Institut Pasteur
in Paris from May 31 to June 1, 2007. Paris Anti-Avian Influenza 2007 will gather more than
200 specialists from 23 countries.
The hot topics of Anti-Avian influenza 2007 will be:
- Political and economic issues of Avian Influenza
- Latest scientific advances on the H5N1 virus
- Latest scientific advances on H5N1 detection
- Prevention and treatments: Focus on vaccine and drugs development
- Prevention of Avian influenza in animals
- Management of a catastrophic scenario, in the case of a pandemic outbreak: Disaster
Management Response
The conference will mainly focus on Avian Influenza situation one year after the worldwide
outbreak (Dr K. Fukuda, WHO, Switzerland). The economic impact of the Avian Influenza
propagation will be explained by M. Brahmbhatt from the World bank, USA. Dr Ch. Murray will
give an estimation of the potential global pandemic Influenza mortality.
The vaccine session attracted many international specialists and companies working in vaccine
development, clinical studies and trials. Dr M. Friede from WHO, Geneva, will present an
overview on Influenza vaccines and their clinical studies. The Inhibition of Influenza virus
infection by a novel antiviral peptide that targets viral attachment to cells will be presented by
Dr S. Schultz-Cherry, from the University of Wisconsin, USA.
The last advances on Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) from medical and political point of view will be
presented by Dr D. Reddy from the Influenza Task Force, F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd, Basel,
Switzerland.
Avian Influenza eradication: Why is it so difficult?
Dr Marvin Edeas, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of Paris Anti-Avian Influenza 2007
announces: ”Our aim is to launch the discussion between the different actors involved in the
fight against Avian Influenza, starting from medical and scientific specialists to government
crisis management specialists. We will try to answer many questions: Pandemic preparation: Is
Europe ready? Can the pandemic be predicted? What are the ethical outcomes of a pandemic
outbreak? Practical measures and controlling of pandemic Influenza spread: The example of
travel restrictions.
Paris Anti-Avian Influenza 2007 will also provide the opportunity to scientists and industrials
to present their work on H5N1, new targets, new tracks or products that have shown their
efficiency in the fight against influenza or new tools and kits to detect the virus (N PourmandStanford University, Rockeby Biomed Ltd).

2ème Conférence internationale sur la grippe aviaire:
Développements récents et perspectives
La deuxième édition de Paris Anti-Avian Influenza 2007 se tiendra les 31 mai et 1er juin 2007 à
l'Institut Pasteur à Paris. Paris Anti-Avian Influenza 2007 réunira plus de 200 spécialistes de 23 pays.
Les points forts de Paris Anti-Avian Influenza 2007 sont:

Le Dr Marvin Edeas, Président du Comité d'organisation de Paris Anti-Avian Influenza 2007 souhaite que
cette conférence lance la discussion entre les différents acteurs impliqués dans le combat contre la
grippe aviaire : des spécialistes médicaux et scientifiques aux spécialistes en gestion de crise de
gouvernements. Cette conférence tentera de répondre à beaucoup de questions : Préparation à la
pandémie : L'Europe est-elle prête ? La pandémie peut-elle être prévue? Quelles sont les conséquences
éthiques d'une pandémie? Mesures pratiques et contrôle de la diffusion de la pandémie: L'exemple des
restrictions de voyage.
La conférence sera également l'occasion pour les scientifiques et les groupes industriels de présenter
leurs travaux sur le virus H5N1 : nouvelles cibles, nouvelles voies ou produits qui ont montré leur
efficacité dans le combat contre la grippe ou les nouveaux outils et les kits pour détecter le virus.
