Slovenian wineries among the
best in the world
One of the most influential magazines
specialising in wine, Wine & Spirits,
ranked two Slovenian wine cellars,
Movia and Goriška Brda Kabaj Morel, in
the list of the top 100 in the world.
The tasting of the best wine will be
held in San Francisco on 20th October.
The Brda region is known for high
quality wines, with the local vine Rebula.
The specialist wine magazine Wine & Spirits selects the best
100 wineries in the world each year. This year two Slovenian
wineries joined the elite: Movia and Kabaj. Both come from the
western Slovenian region of Brda, the land of invigorating
moments, and will present their wines in the company of other
top wineries at the gala tasting in San Francisco on 20th
October.
Aleš Kristančič, from the small
village of Medana in Brda, was
born and raised in a wineproducing family. The Movia
estate dates back to 1700 and
was passed into the hands of the
Kristančič family in 1820.
Throughout its history, Movia
winery has been a synonym for
wines with an impressive character and extraordinary elegance,
from gentle and light classic wines, through a range of mature
wines with good ageing potential, to wines that are unique in
the world. With the Movia winery, Aleš was one of the first
winemakers to start developing Brda into a wine region and
destination.
Jean Michel Morel originates
from Paris, but he found his
home
in
Brda
in
1989. Kabaj wines are known for
their minimalistic etiquette and
big
wine
varieties,
from
seasonal and traditional wines
from Brda to those produced in
amphorae by the Georgian method. Since Jean does not like
drinks with a high volume of alcohol, Kabaj wines are light,
and produce between 60,000 and 70,000 bottles per year. The
wines first mature in French barrels for at least a year, and
then for several months in bottles.
Visit Movia winery and Guest House Kabaj Morel in Brda, and
toast their great success with their best wines. Cheers!
ROC contributes to fund to
aid piracy survivors
The Republic of China (Taiwan)
signed a memorandum of understanding Oct. 21 with the UK-based
International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Networks’
Maritime Piracy Humanitarian Response Programme (MPHRP) on an
ROC donation to the Piracy Survivor Family Fund.
The memorandum was inked by Tung Kuo-yu, ROC Representative to
the EU and Belgium, and Tom Holmer, MPHRP Programme Manager,
at the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium. The
Piracy Survivor Family Fund was established by the UN Contact
Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia to support piracy
survivors and their families.
This year, the ROC government has made two donations on the
recommendation of the European Union, to the fight against
piracy. In addition to the donation to the PSFF, Taiwan has
also donated to Oceans Beyond Piracy (OBP), which is part of
the US organization – the One Earth Future Foundation, to
provide for the establishment of five maritime security
centres, to increase maritime safety along the Somali coast.
To mark Taiwan’s contribution to the world anti-piracy
efforts, MEP Charles Tannock, Honorary Chairman of the EPTaiwan Friendship Group, hosted a Donation Ceremony in the
European Parliament, also on 21st October. Representatives of
OBP and MPHRP presented each a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’
to Representative Tung for the donations, with some Members of
the European Parliament and officials from the European Union
in attendance.
Taiwan has been contributing to capacity-building in
healthcare and maritime security in Somalia in recent years,
as part of its broader aims to coordinate with international
partners to provide humanitarian aid in helping promote
regional and international security.
L’auteur de bandes dessinées
Sean Chuang à l’honneur à
Bruxelles
Daniel-Fouss-Belgian-Comics-Museum and SeanChuang
Egalement connu à Taiwan comme réalisateur de publicités
télévisées (il en a tourné plus de 400), Sean Chuang est le
deuxième artiste taiwanais à être invité au Centre belge de la
bande dessinée après Qiu Row-long [邱若龍] qui y avait
présenté Seediq Bale, les guerriers de l’arc-en-ciiel.

(CNA)
Ruling
Kuomintang (KMT) chairman and presidential nominee Eric Chu (朱
立倫) on Sunday welcomed a pledge by his Democratic Progressive
Party (DPP) rival to end political strife and run a civil
campaign.
Chui said that when he met Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) at the Double
Ten National Day celebrations on Oct. 10, “I told her that I
was pleased to see her on that occasion and welcomed her
presence at the National Day ceremony, hoping that this will
no longer be an issue,” said Chu, who replaced Hung Hsiu-chu
as the KMT’s presidential nominee a day earlier.
In an exclusive interview with CNA, Chu said he shared the
view of the DPP chairwoman and presidential nominee that
Taiwan’s democracy has entered an “uplifting” stage and it is
time to let go of negative campaigning.
“This is something that our generation has a responsibility to
achieve,” Chu said.
In response, Tsai has proposed discussions between the ruling
and opposition parties after the Jan. 16, 2016 elections, no
matter which party wins, according to Chu.
Sitting down to talk “absolutely is not a problem for me,” Chu
said. He said he has never engaged in negative campaigning as
he does not support malicious attacks or smearing tactics.
“It is absolutely not necessary to engage in negative
campaigning, after which the winner will carry scars all
over,” he said.
In her address to supporters at the launch of her campaign
office, Tsai said she broke the DPP tradition by attending
this year’s ROC National Day celebrations to show her
determination to “end political strife” and unite “not just
the parties, but the country.”
“If you’re convinced that the political process should be
rational, reconciliatory and inclusive, the please support
us,” she said.
She conceded that the DPP does not represent the whole of
Taiwan, just as the KMT does not represent the entire ROC.
“If Taiwan loses its right to decide on its own future and if
the ROC loses its free and democratic way of life in the hands
of our generation, the people of Taiwan will not feel pity to
see the two parties being swept into the ash bin of history,”
Tsai said.
Tsai is enjoying a solid lead in polls over Chu and James
Soong, who is running on the People First Party ticket in the
presidential election, which will be held on the same day with
the legislative election.

U.S.
welcomes
visits
by
Taiwan’s
presidential
candidates: AIT
Taipei, Oct. 18 (CNA) American
Institute in Taiwan Spokesperson Sonia Urbom said on Sunday
that the United States welcomes visits from Taiwan’s
presidential candidates, in response to a CNA inquiry on a
possible visit by ruling Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Eric Chu (朱
立倫).
Chu was nominated KMT candidate for the January presidential
election in a special party congress on Saturday, overturning
the decision in July to nominate Deputy Legislative Speaker
Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱), due to her persistent poor showing in the
polls relative to that of Democratic Progressive Party
candidate Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文).
Local media reported that Chu was considering a week-long trip
to the U.S. to meet with U.S. officials in early or midNovember and could visit Japan on his way back to Taiwan.

Taiwan people want change of
government: Tsai
Taipei, Oct. 17 (CNA) Tsai Ing-wen
(蔡英文), the presidential candidate of the opposition Democratic
Progressive Party (DPP) , said Saturday that no matter who is
representing the Kuomintang (KMT) in the 2016 presidential
election, the voters want a change of government.
Tsai, the front-runner in the opinion polls, said the ruling
KMT was busy changing its presidential candidate 90 days
before the election.
“But in fact, a majority of Taiwanese people have already made
up their minds, and no matter who replaces whom in the KMT,
the people have decided to vote another party into power,” she
said.
Tsai attended four campaign activities in New Taipei Saturday,
giving rise to speculations that she was trying to cement
support for the DPP now that Eric Chu (朱立倫), New Taipei mayor
and KMT chairman, has been selected as his party’s new
presidential candidate to replace Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱).
Tsai said her party has long been prepared for possible
changes and will campaign at its own pace.
“We will be very careful about the battle. But we are also
very confident,” she said.
James Soong (宋楚瑜), the presidential candidate of the minor
People First Party (PFP), a splinter party of the KMT, did not
respond directly to questions about whether there was room for
cooperation between the PFP and KMT.
“We are not at odds with them, we can cooperate with any
political party,” he said.
He said that he is running for president in the hope of
reviving Taiwan’s glory.

KMT needs to start anew: Chu
Taipei, Oct. 17 (CNA) Ruling
Kuomintang Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫) said Saturday that his
party has reached a crucial point where it needs to “adjust
its pace and start anew” to boost its flagging presidential
and legislative election campaign.
With the elections less than 100 days away, many grassroots
KMT members have been expressing feelings of anxiety and
helplessness to the party, Chu said in his opening speech at a
special party congress held to discuss a proposal to nullify
the presidential candidacy of Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱).
The proposal was later approved by a show of hands, and Chu
was named as the party’s new presidential candidate.
“All these reactions by the public tell us that we cannot go
on like this,” Chi said. “We need to adjust our pace and start
anew.”
At the start of his speech, he again apologized to Hung for
the move to remove her as the party’s 2016 presidential
candidate.
Chu was among five KMT VIPs who addressed the gathering. The
other four were Hung, President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) and former
chairmen Lien Chan (連戰) and Wu Poh-hsiung (吳伯雄).
Ma said he was impressed by the courage demonstrated by Hung,
who threw her hat into the ring six months ago when no one
else had come forward to compete in the party’s presidential
primary.
He said the KMT will definitely lose the elections if it is
divided, and he called on party members to stand united behind
the new candidate selected by the congress.
In his speech, Lien said he appreciated the sacrifice Hung
made for the KMT and said he expects Chu to unite the party to
“rescue Taiwan.”
Wu, meanwhile, praised Hung as the biggest winner, saying that
when someone “takes a step back, the world opens up.”

Japan, the Philippines
Taipei, Oct. 16 (CNA) V Air, a lowcost carrier owned by Taiwan’s TransAsia Airways, said Friday
that it will launch flights to Japan and the Philippines in
the next five months in an effort to expand its operations.
The airline will acquire its third and fourth aircraft in the
coming months, which will be used to provide air service from
Taiwan to destinations in Japan and the Philippines, it said.
It is expected to launch flights to Japan’s Nagoya in December
and to Fukuoka and Osaka in January, the carrier said.
After the fourth aircraft is delivered in March next year, the
airline will begin operating flights to Japan’s capital Tokyo
and the Philippines’ capital Manila, it said.
V Air currently operates air services between Taiwan and Busan
in South Korea, as well as to Bangkok and Chiang Mai in
Thailand.

Chibi
Maruko-chan
visits
Taichung to promote tourism
Taipei, Oct. 16 (CNA) The lead
character of a popular Japanese manga series and animation,
Chibi Maruko-chan (櫻桃小丸子), visited the Taichung City
government Friday to promote tourism in her birthplace of
Shizuoka Prefecture and cooperation with the central Taiwan
municipality.
A life-sized effigy of the much-loved manga figure was part of
a delegation headed by Yoshi Kusawake, an official in charge
of city promotion affairs in the Shizuoka City government,
that is visiting Taichung to attend the Taichung International
Travel Fair Oct. 16-19.
“Welcome to Maruko-chan’s hometown,” Kusawake said as he
touted a Chibi Maruko-chan entertainment park in Shizuoka, as
well as agricultural specialities of the prefecture such as
green tea and strawberries.
In return, Taichung City officials brought the Japanese
delegation up to date on other upcoming events in the city,
including an international animation exhibition and a hot
spring festival, in the hope that it will bring the
information back to Japan to inform prospective visitors to
Taiwan.
Taichung Tourism and Travel Bureau Chief Secretary Chuang Yumeng (莊右孟) said that there have been frequent exchanges
between Taichung and Japan, particularly in the sector of hot
spring tourism, for many years.
He expressed hope that Kusawake and Chibi Maruko-chan’s visit
will further boost cooperation in tourism between the two
cities.
According to the Tourism and Travel Bureau, thanks to an
increase in the number of flights from Taichung to Japan’s
Okinawa and Seoul in South Korea, the number of foreign
travelers flying to Taichung had increased by 36,530 as of the
end of August this year, up 17.49 percent from the same period
of last year.
In recent years, the central Taiwan city has been sparing no
efforts to attract foreign travelers to enter Taiwan through
Taichung rather than via Taipei in the north of the country.

Free
Taiwan
Party
seeking
candidates
elections
for
legislative
Tainan. Oct. 16 (CNA) The newly
formed Free Taiwan Party (FTP), which advocates Taiwan
independence, is inviting people who share the party’s
political ideals to join it and run for seats in the January
2016 legislative elections.
A new political party needs to nominate candidates in at least
10 of the 73 electoral districts in order to qualify to run
for seats in the Legislative Yuan, and the FTP is hoping that
if it can qualify to run, it could win 5 percent of the votes
and win one of the 34 party-list seats, according to FTP
Chairman Tsay Ting-kuei.
Opening the first FTP campaign office in Tainan, the civil
engineering professor and political activist said that by
representing the FTP in the Jan. 16 elections, politicians
interested in public office can build up their images with
more public exposure.
However, he added, the FTP, as a new party, is setting its
sights more on the 2018 city and county council elections.
