Recognized for excellence, it has ranked among the top ten National Liberal Arts Colleges by U.S. News & World Report for ten consecutive years. In addition to courses leading to academic degrees, the school operates a Conservatory of Fine and Performing Arts that serves the community in areas of dance, theater and music for preschool children through adults. The three manual mechanical action organ at Birmingham-Southern College is installed in a recital hall where it is used for practice, teaching and performance. The specification was developed to provide a wide range of registrational possibilities for use in playing music from different schools and periods of organ literature. The expressive Récit has the traditional string and céleste plus a complete chorus of reeds, which are important in the performance of nineteenth and twentieth century literature.
