Ce Séminaire Archéologique de l’Ouest consacré aux îles bretonnes s’est déroulé le 1er avril 2014 à l’Université de Rennes 1.
La volonté d’organiser ce séminaire est né spontanément du dynamisme qui agite actuellement la recherche archéologique
sur les domaines insulaires de la façade ouest de la France (Daire, 2009). En effet, ce séminaire prend place dans une
période charnière de la recherche archéologique sur les îles. Les fouilles conduites de longue date sur Ouessant (sous la
direction de Jean-Paul Le Bihan), l’archipel de Molène (le Programme Archéologique Molénais, sous la direction d’Yvan
Pailler), l’île d’Hoedic (sous la direction de Jean-Marc Large et Marie-Yvane Daire), l’archipel des Glénan et l’île aux
Moutons (sous la direction de Marie-Yvane Daire et Gwenaëlle Hamon) sont soit publiées soit en cours de publication
(Le Bihan et Villard, 2001 ; Le Bihan et al., 2010 ; Large, 2014 ; Daire et al., 2006 ; Daire et Hamon, 2013). De plus,
plusieurs doctorats en cours ou récemment soutenus abordent le thème de l’insularité, que ce soit dans le cadre des îles
bretonnes, anglo-normandes ou encore britanniques (B. Gehres, en préparation ; A. Baudouin en préparation ; H. Pioffet
en préparation ; Audouard, 2014). De nouvelles problématiques émergent, dont la publication de ce séminaire se veut être
le porte-parole.

Une approche pluri-disciplinaire sur la question de l’insularité nous est apparue essentielle, au vu des nombreuses
recherches d’ores et déjà menées sur ce thème dans une perspective historique, ethnographique, géographique (Auphan,
1999 ; Brigand, 2002 ; Salomé, 2003 ; Darcques-Tassin, 2005...). Dans cette optique, une analyse comparée des sociétés
insulaires préhistoriques et récentes nous semble avoir à terme un véritable potentiel de recherche (comprendre de manière
diachronique l’organisation entre les îles, les relations entre les grandes et les petites îles, la dynamique d’exploitation
des ressources et le degré de dépendance par rapport au continent...). Les comparaisons avec d’autres systèmes insulaires,

Cette publication réunit donc différents acteurs des recherches sur les îles, qu’ils soient archéologues, archéomètre,
archéomalacologue, géographe, historien...

Le cadre principal du séminaire est la question de l’insularité et de sa perception au travers des documents archéologiques
de terrain, des ressources historiques, de l’approche géographique...

L’approche menée dans le cadre de ce séminaire s’inscrit dans celle plus large de la science dédiée à l’étude des îles : la

La principale notion que nous allons aborder ici est celle de l’insularité.

d’une ou de plusieurs îles ; ensembles de caractères propres à un tel territoire, à sa population». Il s’agit d’un concept
multidimensionnel utilisé en géographie mais également par d’autres disciplines (biologie, économie, archéologie…).
En géographie, les chercheurs peuvent considérer l’île comme un espace semblable aux autres (montagne, plaine…), un
simple objet disciplinaire. Mais d’autres appréhendent l’insularité comme l’élément clé de la problématique touchant les

L’insularité sociale ou anthropologique apparaît encore plus pertinente à examiner ici. Ainsi, pour Philippe Pelletier,
l’insularité est la relation dynamique qui se construit entre un espace insulaire et la société qui y vit, la question de la taille
de l’île étant à son avis moins importante que celle de l’occupation humaine (Pelletier, 2005). Nous touchons là au cœur
de notre sujet.

This Seminar on the Archaeology of Western France, which focused on the islands of Brittany, was held on 1 April 2014
at the University of Rennes 1.
The desire to organize this seminar arose spontaneously from the dynamism which currently animates archaeological
research on island spaces of the western seaboard of France (Daire, 2009). Indeed, this seminar is taking place during
a pivotal period of archaeological research covering these islands. The results of long-continued excavations on Ushant
(under the direction of Jean-Paul Le Bihan), the archipelago of Molène (the Molène Archaeological Programme, under
the direction of Yvan Pailler), the island of Hoedic (under the direction of Jean-Marc Large and Marie-Yvane Daire), the
archipelago of Glénan and the Île aux Moutons (under the direction of Marie-Yvane Daire and Gwenaëlle Hamon) are
either published or in the course of publication (Le Bihan and Villard, 2001; Le Bihan and al, 2010; Large, 2014; Daire
and al, 2006; Daire and Hamon, 2013). Moreover, several doctoral theses in preparation or recently produced address
the topic of insularity within the framework of the islands of Brittany, the Channel Islands as well as other islands off the
British coast (B. Gehres, in preparation; A. Baudouin in preparation; H. Pioffet in preparation; Audouard, 2014). New
problems are emerging, which will be highlighted by the publication of this seminar.

A multidisciplinary approach to the question of insularity appears essential, in view of the large amount of research
currently undertaken on this topic from the historical, ethnographic and geographical points of view (Auphan, 1999;
Brigand, 2002; Salome, 2003; Darcques-Tassin, 2005, etc.). Accordingly, a comparative analysis of prehistoric and
recent island societies would seem to have a true long-term potential for research (to understand in a diachronic way the
organization between islands, the relations between large and small islands, the dynamics of exploitation of resources and
the degree of dependence with respect to the continent, etc.). Comparisons with other island systems would also offer a

This publication brings together various actors of research on islands, including archeologists, archeometrists,
archeomalacologists, geographers, historians, etc.

The main framework of the seminar concerns the question of insularity and its perception based on studies of the
archaeological record and historical resources, as well through the geographical approach, etc.
Various different lines of thought are developed:

The approach adopted in the framework of this seminar comes under the broader scope of nissology, the science dedicated
to the study of islands. This neologism was coined in 1982 by the sociologist Abraham Moles, based on the Greek nissos
(island), to describe his work on island spaces. According to A. Moles, considering the island as an object of study
in its own right allows us to place various situations of insularity into perspective using frameworks of interpretation
and hierarchical indices (Moles et Rohmer, 1982). The increased interest in such an approach is clearly evident today,
in particular through articles published in specialized journals such as the Island Studies Journal or the online journal

concepts when wishing to undertake research on island spaces.

recognized by everyone, the expression of this state or condition is indisputably more complex to grasp.
The main concept addressed here is that of insularity.

PRUHLVODQGVWKHVHWVRIFKDUDFWHUVVSHFL¿FWRVXFKDWHUULWRU\LWVSRSXODWLRQª[Translator’s note: in English dictionaries,
insXlarit\ is de¿ned as: state or condition oI Eeing an island, or lacNing contact@. It is a multidimensional concept used
in geography, but also in other disciplines (biology, economics, archeology, etc.). In geography, researchers can regard
the island as a space in the same way as any other (mountain, plain, etc.), representing a simple object of study. But other
workers understand insularity as the key element of issues affecting islands, and place its study at the very heart of their
VFLHQWL¿FTXHVWLRQLQJ%ULJDQG7KHLVODQGWKXVEHFRPHVD©ODERUDWRU\IRUVWXGLHVª,QWKLVWKHPDWLFDUHDWKH
concept of boundary leads to a geopolitical analysis.
Social or anthropological insularity appears even more relevant to examine here. Thus, for Philippe Pelletier, insularity
is the dynamic relationship built up between an island space and the community which lives there; this author considers
the question of size of the island as being less important than human occupation (Pelletier, 2005). This brings us here to
the heart of our subject.
