The country rocks a r e a n d a l u s i t e s c h i s t s , limestone and
q u a r t z i t e s of t h e Slocan s e r i e s . The c o n t a c t w i t h t h e Nelson
b a t h o l i t h l i e s 1,000 f e e t o r s o t o t h e n o r t h of t h e mine and
probably u n d e r l i e s i t a t no g r e a t depth. The s t r a t a i n genera
s t r i k e N70°E and d i p 80°SE. The main f i s s u r e v e i n , a sheared
zone from 5 t o 6 f e e t wide, s t r i k e s N55-65OE and d i p s SE a t 75
On i t l i e t h e Black Fox, Daisy, Dublin, Cork and Province
claims. Movement along t h e v e i n has o f f s e t t h e beds about 80
f e e t h o r i z o n t a l l y . O r e found i n t h e v e i n c o n s i s t s of an
i n t i m a t e mixture of s p h a l e r i t e and galena with s m a l l amounts o
p y r i t e and c h a l c o p y r i t e i n a gangue composed l a r g e l y of s i d e r i t e b u t i n c l u d i n g varying amounts of q u a r t z and c a l c i t e
a s s o c i a t e d w i t h a l t e r e d wall-rock.
Replacement o r e i s found a
t h e i n t e r s e c t i o n of t h e f i s s u r e s w i t h t h e limestone and may
extend f o r d i s t a n c e s up t o 100 f e e t from t h e v e i n on t h e hangi n g w a l l s i d e . On t h e f o o t w a l l s i d e t h e concentration of o r e
minerals i s l e s s n o t i c e a b l e .

This property, c o n s i s t i n g of 1 3 claims covering about 480
a c r e s , i s l o c a t e d on t h e s o u t h s i d e of Keen Creek about 1 0 miles
by road from Kaslo.
The Cork group of 8 claims w a s s t a k e d f o r t h e S i l v e r S t a r
Mining Co. Ltd. i n 1900. The Province group, c o n s i s t i n g of 6
a d j o i n i n g claims, was s t a k e d i n 1902 and Province Mines Ltd.
began t h e development work. For a number of y e a r s t h e s e two
groups w e r e operated a s two mines, t h e Cork and t h e Province.
The Province mine was operated by t h e Company o r by l e a s e r s
u n t i l 1908. The Cork mine c l o s e d i n 1910 and remained closed
t h e following y e a r although t h e management was taken over by
t h e West Kootenay Corporation. A shipment of o r e , under t h e
name of t h e S e l k i r k Mining Co. Ltd., was r e p o r t e d l y made from
t h e Cork mine i n 1913.
The two p r o p e r t i e s were combined i n 1914 under t h e name of
Cork-Province Mines Ltd. and i t operated i n t e r m i t t e n t l y u n t i l
1930. Leasers made s e v e r a l small shipments of o r e from c l e a n
up work on t h e s u r f a c e and from underground during t h e period
1930-1948.
I n 1949 t h e property was acquired by Base Metals
gining Corporation Ltd. and o p e r a t i o n s continued u n t i l l a t e i n
1953 when t h e mine was closed and t h e lower workings allowed
t o flood.
During t h e e a r l y y e a r s of o p e r a t i o n development work was
c a r r i e d o u t on 5 l e v e l s . The main a d i t (NO. 3 l e v e l ) was
driven a s a c r o s s c u t t u n n e l f o r 900 f e e t . It i s connected t o
No. 1 l e v e l by a r a i s e and t o Nos. 4 and 1 5 l e v e l s by a 70"
s h a f t , which was l a t e r deepened t o e s t a b l i s h a 6 t h l e v e l . I n
1952 a v e r t i c a l s h a f t was sunk from No. 3 l e v e l f o r 555 f e e t
and Nos. 7 and 8 l e v e l s e s t a b l i s h e d . These new l e v e l s required
c r o s s c u t s , each about 200 f e e t long, t o reach t h e v e i n . D r i f t s
on t h e s e two lower l e v e l s i n d i c a t e d o r e of average mine grade
but i n s u f f i c i e n t work was done t o determine i t s e x t e n t .
London P r i d e S i l v e r Mines Ltd. acquired a 10 y e a r l e a s e on
the property i n A p r i l 1964. During t h e summer t h e mine was
r e h a b i l i t a t e d and t h e 150 t o n m i l l was put i n t o o p e r a t i o n i n
September.

From 1900 t o 1953, 169,433 t o n s of o r e were shipped from
t h i s p r o p e r t y . From t h i s o r e 56 ounces of gold, 456,973 ounces
of s i l v e r , 11,278,513 pounds of l e a d , 14,986,081 pounds of z i n c
and 105,791 pounds of cadmium were recovered.
