1-2 Machine Descriptions
1-2-1 Overview
Glue Temperature Control Knob
This knob is used to adjust the glue temperature. A high temperature increases the penetration of the glue into the book spine, but
shortens the service life of glue.
The normal glue temperature is 180 degrees
Celsius.
Melt Tank Unit
The melted glue is applied to the
book spine by this unit.
Glue Supply Port
Glue must be supplied in this port
when the fins project about 1 cm
above the surface of melted glue.
Do not fill above the limit (RED)
line.
Roughening Cutter Guide
The book spine is roughened
during its passage between these
guides.
The roughening cutter rotates
under these guides. The clamper
will not move when these
guides are open.
Application Drum
This drum rotation is synchronized
with the motion of the clamper and
applies glue to the book spine.
Clamper
A set of sheets are clamped with
the clamper and transported to the
gluing station, before being returned to the nipping section.
Brush
This brush prevents scattering of trimmings.
Guard
This guard protects fingers.
When the guard is tilted by the
finished book, it resets the
nipper.
Glue Adjusting Knob
This knob is loosened and locked in desired position. The number on the scale
shows the amount of glue applied to the
book spine in “mm”.
Nipper
The nipper holds the book block and
cover together and forms the square
spine of the book. The nipper descends with the clamper movement.
Tape Alignment Guide Adjusting Knob
This knob is used to adjust the width of the
tape guides. Refer to page 15 for details.
Clamper Open/Close Buttons
The clamper is opened and closed with these
buttons. Refer to page 4 for details.

1-2 Machine Descriptions
Spine Cooling Blower Pipe
Air blown from this pipe cools
the spine of the perfect bound
book.
Cover Stopper
The cover is aligned with this
stopper which is adjustable to suit
cover size.
Nipper Pressure Adjustment Knob
The knob is used to adjust the nipper
pressure. The nipper pressure increases when the knob is turned
clockwise. When the nipper pressure
is too weak, the binding quality may
deteriorate.
Operation Panel
The machine is operated from this panel.
Refer to page 4 for details.
Trimmings Bag
Trimmings are collected in this bag,
which should be emptied sufficiently
often to maintain adequate suction.
Breaker
Refer to “3-6 Resetting the breaker”(p.28)
for operating details.

clamper to ensure that all sheets are
correctly positioned (see drawing 1
below). If this has not been done, glue
will not be applied to the edges of any
sheets which are riding proud of the block
(see drawing 2 below).
2. Hold the book block by hands to prevent
from curling the bottom of book.(see
drawing 3 below.)
3. Set up the cover in the correct position.
Improper cover setting cause the cover to
skew.
4. If a cover is used when the grain direction
of the material is not parallel to the folding lines, good quality binding will not be
possible.

Horizon Hot-melt Glue
Fin
Hot-melt glue is solid at normal temperature, starts to soften at 100 degrees Celsius and turns to a liquid as the temperature rises further. The liquid glue permeates the book sheets, and then solidifies
and adheres to the sheets as the temperature falls.
The quality of the hot-melt glue will
deteriorate after long-term use at high
temperature. Continuous binding operations with new glue being regularly added
will not lead to rapid deterioration of the
glue, but the same material will
deteriotrate after continuous exposure to
high temperature and will suffer from
gelation after 50 hours have passed.
Glue exposed to ultraviolet radiation for 6
to 12 months will becomes brittle, but this
creates no problem in normal use. The
cover of a bound book will protect the
glue from direct ultraviolet irradiation.

3-2 Emptying the Trimmings Bag
Empty the trimmings bag at least once every
2 weeks to maintain suction from the blower.
WARNING
- Always turn off the power switch
before emptying the trimmings bag,
otherwise severe personal injury could
result.
1. Open the door of the blower unit.

3-3 Brush Replacement
When trimmings remain scattered around
the roughening unit because the brushes
have deteriorated, replace the brushes.
WARNINGS
- Turn off the main power before replacing the brushes. Otherwise severe
personal injury could result.
- The melt tank will remain hot after
binding operations. Keep your hands
and fingers away from the hot melt
tank, otherwise severe personal injury
could result.

3-4 Roughening Cutter Replacement
Although the roughening cutter is sufficiently durable, it will need to be replaced
when the book spine is coarse or when the
speed of rotation slows markedly.
NOTE
This cutter is reversible.
Fixing Screws
WARNINGS
-Turn off the main power before replacing the roughening cutter.
- Wear leather or other thick material
gloves when replacing the roughening
cutter.
- The roughening cutter may spring out
when the fixing screw is loosened, so
place a cloth over the cutter before
loosening the fixing screw.
1. Turn off power switch.

3.Maintenance
3-5 Draining the Glue
In normal operation, the glue does not need
to be drained and replaced frequently.
However, if the glue has deteriorated, replace
it.
WARNING
The melt tank is heated around
180 degrees Celsius. Always wear leather
or other thick material gloves when
working on the melt tank. Otherwise
severe personal injury could result.
