Pour faire écho à l’exposition du premier étage du Centre de
Création, l’artiste est intervenue dans l’espace public. Elle a
relié des arbres entre eux à l’aide de bandes de sari. Cette
installation matérialisait les rapports communicationnels
qui peuvent exister entre végétaux mais que l’homme ne
peut percevoir.
À travers son travail artistique, Swati Gupta a souhaité
créer une interaction entre deux cultures différentes pour
questionner la part d’influence qu’elles peuvent avoir
entre elles et leurs capacités à agir mutuellement sur les
habitudes culturelles de leurs pays respectifs.

Swati Gupta was born in New Dehli in 1982. She settled in
France in 2004 and graduated in visual arts from the École
des Beaux-Arts in Paris-Cergy. From then on, her artistic
work has been dealing with the socio-cultural differences
(women condition, everyday life, and so on) dividing the
Western and Eastern worlds.
The results of her residency in Bazouges-la-Pérouse
(March 2007) were presented on the first floor of the
Centre de Création.
For her installation “Mandala”, she fixed patches of
saris (i.e. the traditional women’s clothes) to the ceiling,
following the principle of the mandala – a circular pattern
that stands for the cosmos and symbolises the conjunction
of the material and spiritual worlds. The cosmos was
simultaneously materialised on the floor by colourful round
shapes made of flour, spices and natural pigments. The
multi-coloured rings were also meant to remind the viewer
of the traditional Hindu bread called chapatti.
A series of six portraits, using the chemical photography
technique, was exhibited to run parallel with that installation.
They had been shot during an intervention of the artist with
Bazouges inhabitants, which consisted in evoking Holi, a
popular Hindu festival announcing the coming of Spring
and during which people throw coloured powder at each
other. The performance took place in March, which is the
month when Holi is celebrated in India.
In addition, the video “In the Country” showed the artist
striking various yoga poses in a number of different places
around town.
To echo the Centre de Création’s first floor exhibition,
the artist intervened in the public space. She used sari
lengths to bind trees together, in order to materialize the
communication links that might exist between plants, but
which human beings cannot perceive.
Throughout her artistic practise, Swati Gupta aimed at
creating an interaction between two different cultures, to
examine not only the extent to which they may influence
each other, but also their ability to act mutually upon the
respective cultural customs of both worlds.

Swati Gupta est née en 1982 à New Delhi. En France depuis
2004 pour préparer un diplôme national d’arts plastiques
à l’École des beaux-arts de Paris-Cergy, elle questionne à
travers son travail artistique les différences culturelles et
sociales qui existent entre le monde occidental et oriental
(la condition de la femme, la vie quotidienne…).
Au 1er étage du Centre de Création était présenté le résultat
d’une résidence que l’artiste a effectuée à Bazouges-laPérouse en mars 2007.
L’installation « Mandala » représentait des morceaux de
saris (vêtements traditionnels féminins), fixés au plafond
selon le principe du mandala (forme circulaire représentant
le cosmos et symbolisant la rencontre entre les mondes
matériel et spirituel). Ce cosmos était également symbolisé
au sol par des ronds de couleur fabriqués à partir de farine,
d’épices et de pigments naturels. Ces cercles colorés
évoquaient aussi le chapati, pain traditionnel indien.
En parallèle à cette installation, étaient présentés 6 portraits
argentiques pris lors d’une intervention que l’artiste a
organisée avec des habitants de Bazouges. Elle a consisté
à reproduire Holi, une fête traditionnelle indienne qui
annonce l’arrivée du printemps et dont le principe est que
les participants se lancent des pigments colorés. Cette
intervention a été organisée en mars dernier, période où
l’on fête Holi en Inde.
Enfin, la vidéo « In the Country », représentait l’artiste
en posture de yoga dans différents endroits de la
commune.
