Collège universitaire de Sciences Po Etudes ibériques et latino-américaines, Campus de Poitiers Christoph Bey Enseignement d’ouverture Printemps 2009-2010 Business Ethics Méthodes pédagogiques : Cours enseigné en anglais Cours magistraux et séminaires (études de cas) Objectifs pédagogiques : - make students aware of potential ethical conflicts in business, economics, and organisations - introduction of several ethical approaches and their use in management - application of a practical approach for resolving ethical conflicts in day-to-day management Programme Syllabus (indicatif) : - Definitions and international comparison of different approaches : (ethics, moral, deontology) – human rights as the foundation of ethics - A tool for resolving conflicts – individual sentiment and responsibility or societal legitimation? - Components of modern ethics : organisation ethics, sustainable development, corporate social responsibility - An anticipating ethics for a technological civilisation – future generations, the precautionary principle and its limits - Different theories and their application (utilitarianism, the categorical imperative, deontology). example of global warming - Ethics in organisations: ethical people within a legal structure – can a firm be considered ethical? - 4 types of managers : the « citizen in organisations » and three types of deficient ethical behaviour - Ethics as a clarification of the employment contract An organisation’s stakeholders – definitions and management - Shareholder value or stakeholder value as a company goal? - Business ethics and the activities of multinational enterprise – cultural relativism or universalism?
