What better way to illustrate the wealth of our Canadian provinces in this
International Special Edition than to showcase animals which are from
three different regions, have travelled and also demonstrate great breeding abilities? On the left is Jonholm Kellogg’s Fiona, EX 96 3E, bred in
Ontario by Mr. John C. Hendy and now owned by Loraine Yersin, Jenny
Henchoz, Roger Goncerut & Ferme Élégance, in Québec. She is shown
here with her only two milking daughters, Des Chamois Feeling ET, VG-87
at 2-8 (centre) and her full sister, Brixham Hector Jenny ET, also VG-87 at
2-10 (right). Feeling is also a property of Fiona’s owners, and Jenny is
owned by Dana Greenough from Scotch Village, NS, Fiona’s previous
owner. Jenny won Grand Champion at the 2010 Toronto Royal Winter Fair
in addition to her All-Canadian titles in 2009-2010 in the Mature Cow Class
and her All-Canadian nomination in 2011. As for Feeling, she was nominated All-Canadian in 2012 in the Junior 2 Years Old Class, as was Jenny in
the Intermediate Yearling Class in 2011. Embryos from Des Chamois
Feeling x Poker are available.
Quoi de mieux pour illustrer la richesse des provinces canadiennes dans
ce Spécial International que de mettre en valeurs des animaux de trois
endroits et qui ont voyagé et qui nous montrent également la capacité
d’élevage? Voici Jonholm Kellogg’s Fiona, EX 96 3E, (gauche) vache élevée
en Ontario par monsieur John C Hendy et qui est maintenant la propriété
de Loraine Yersin, Jenny Henchoz, Roger Goncerut & Ferme Élégance, au
Québec. Elle est photographiée ici avec ses deux uniques filles en lait soit
Des Chamois Feeling ET, TB-87 à 2 ans 8 mois (milieu) et sa sœur propre,
Brixham Hector Jenny ET également TB-87 à 2 ans 10 mois (droite).
Feeling appartient, elle aussi, aux propriétaires de Fiona, et Jenny est la
propriété de Dana Greenough, de Scotch Village, en Nouvelle-Écosse,
anciennement le propriétaire de Fiona. Cette dernière fut la Grande
Championne à la Foire Royal d’hivers de Toronto en 2010 en plus d’être All

What an amazing opportunity this is to share the
fall issue of the US Ayrshire Digest and the Canadian Ayrshire
Review! The US Ayrshire Association and Ayrshire Canada has collaborated on yet
again a great publication to share with our members, Industry Partners and Ayrshire
enthusiasts around the world. This is a great example of how National Associations
can share information and work together to achieve success. Now it is time to
continue this relationship and grow as a breed in today’s fast changing dairy
industry with a common vision of increasing the Ayrshire population in the global
market and supporting our dedicated members along the way.
The summer was busy with successful Ayrshire shows, sales and events on both
sides of the border. Now with the World Dairy Expo and the Royal Winter Fair
around the corner, Ayrshire enthusiasts from around the world are preparing to see
some of the finest Ayrshires in North America. Be sure to introduce yourselves to
each other and continue to grow the Ayrshire network. International networking
and sharing of information is what will make our Associations stronger in the
competitive markets today. Genomics are leading the way and although the
Ayrshire population is smaller in North America we look to other countries where
Ayrshires dominate the dairy industry. Pooling our cattle information by registering,
genomic testing, milk testing, and classifying, data will become more and more
accurate and the proof will show that Ayrshires are one of the most profitable cows
around!
The World Ayrshire Federation aids in facilitating the communication between
International Ayrshire Associations and continually promotes the breed. One
example is the success of the 2012 photo competition – what an exceptional way
to promote the breed around the world! We look forward to seeing some beautiful
Ayrshire photos come through this January 2014 and details for the competition will
soon be posted on the WAF website www.worldayrshirefederation.com.
Enjoy the fall season and the upcoming Ayrshire events! Look for up to date show
results on the www.ayrshire-canada.com and www.usayrshire.com websites and
continue to follow the Ayrshire action on facebook. Whether you are in the stands,
exhibiting or reading the results on the website, be mindful of show ethics and the
integrity of the breed that we are all proud of us, as this is the time to shine.
Ayrshires are thriving in the dairy industry - interest is peaking and people are
talking!

produire une édition exceptionnelle pour nos
membres, les intervenants de l’industrie et autres passionnés de la race Ayrshire à
travers le monde. Voilà un très bon exemple de comment le partage d’information
et la coopération entre associations nationales peuvent mener au succès. Il est
maintenant temps de solidifier cette relation et de grandir en tant que race au cœur
de cette industrie laitière actuelle en plein essor, en se concentrant sur un objectif
commun, celui d’accroître la population Ayrshire sur le marché international et de
soutenir nos membres dévoués au cours de ce processus.
L’été fut une période très chargée, avec plusieurs expositions, ventes et événements
Ayrshire couronnés de succès, tant au Canada qu’aux États-Unis. Avec la venue de
la « World Dairy Expo » et de la foire royale d’hiver, les passionnés de la race
Ayrshire de partout dans le monde s’apprêtent à voir quelques-unes des plus belles
vaches Ayrshire en Amérique du Nord. N’hésitez pas à faire connaissance l’un avec
l’autre et élargir votre réseau Ayrshire. Le réseautage international et le partage
d’information contribuent à renforcer nos associations au sein des marchés
compétitifs d’aujourd’hui. La génomique ouvre la voie et, bien que la population
Ayrshire en Amérique du Nord soit plus petite, nous nous tournons vers d’autres
pays où la race Ayrshire domine l’industrie laitière. En rassemblant les données de
notre bétail via les enregistrements, les tests génomiques, les tests laitiers et la
classification, l’information deviendra progressivement plus exacte et prouvera que
la race Ayrshire est l’une des plus profitables sur la planète!
La fédération Ayrshire mondiale contribue à faciliter la communication entre les
associations nationales et participe continuellement à la promotion de la race.
Prenons, par exemple, le concours de photos en 2012 qui fut un immense succès;
quelle belle façon de promouvoir la race partout dans le monde! Nous avons déjà
hâte d’admirer vos superbes photos de vaches Ayrshire en janvier 2014; les détails
du concours seront bientôt affichés sur le site internet de la fédération

Hello everyone. Although time is flying
by, there ccontinues to be lots of available
opportunities for discovery and fun. Since
the last Review issue, Directors of the Board
have not missed any opportunity to be involved. We
attended the 43rd edition of the Lotbinière Showin St-Agapit (QC), the Old Home
Week Fair in Charlottetown (PEI), the Appalaches Ayrshire Club’s Summer Sale
at the Ferme Lady in Red in Issoudun (QC), the Montmagny Provincial Show
(QC), and the Paris Fall Fair in Paris (ON). Your comments and questions are
always welcome!
Last August, Ayrshire Canada participated in one of most anticipated events every
year on Prince-Edward Island, the Old Home Week Fair held in Charlottetown.
People take part in this event which focuses on celebrating farming and agricultural traditions but also on entertainment. This occasion had one sole purpose:
to mobilize the Ayrshire community. I was aware that many of you were excited
but also that others were skeptical about this event. The conclusion: A good
show!, Fun!, and Great Rye! Three essential elements sure to make our Ayrshire
breeders happy! Thanks to Lora and her Ayrshire Canada team for planning and
coordinating the trip. Thanks to the Atlantic Club volunteers for your hospitality
and your organization skills, with special thanks to Peter Rossiter, Forever
Schoon Farm and République Farm as well as Hugues Denis for his involvement
with the Quebec exhibit. And thanks to you, dear members, who attended the
event. If there is a lesson to be learnt for any future opportunity, it is the following: conquer the fear of being afraid! Get involved - through efforts and action,
great things will happen to our Ayrshires!
Bonjour à tous. Bien que le temps file très rapidement, les occasions de découvertes et de plaisir s’offrent à nous. Depuis la dernière parution de la revue, les
membres du conseil d’administration n’ont pas manqué les opportunités de
s’impliquer. Nous étions présents à la 43e édition de l’Expo de Lotbinière à StAgapit (Qc), la foire «Old Home Week » de Charlottetown (Î.-P.-É.), la vente d’été
du club Ayrshire des Appalaches à la Ferme Lady in Red, Issoudun (Qc), l’Expo
provinciale de Montmagny (Qc) et à la foire « Paris Fall Fair », Paris (Ont.). Vos
commentaires et vos suggestions sont toujours les bienvenus!
En août dernier, Ayrshire Canada participait à un des événements les plus
attendus chaque année sur l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard, soit la foire « Old Home
Week » tenue à Charlettetown. Les gens viennent prendre part à cet événement
axé sur la célébration des coutumes relatives à la ferme et à l’agriculture mais
aussi sur le divertissement. Le rendez-vous se voulait une opportunité unique de
« Mobilisation Ayrshire ». Je savais que plusieurs d’entre vous étaient excités mais
aussi que certains étaient sceptiques face à l’événement. La conclusion: Un bon
show!, du plaisir!, du bon Rye! Trois éléments essentiels pour rendre heureux nos
éleveurs Ayrshire. Merci à Lora et son équipe d’Ayrshire Canada pour la planification et la coordination du voyage. Merci aux bénévoles du club des Maritimes
pour votre hospitalité et votre sens de l’organisation spécialement à M. Peter
Rossiter, à la Ferme Forever Schoon et Ferme République ainsi qu’à M. Hugues
Denis pour son implication dans l’exhibit du Québec. Et à vous, chers membres,
qui y étaient présents. La leçon à retenir pour toute expérience future: vaincre la
peur d’avoir peur! Impliquez-vous, c’est dans l’action que de belles choses arriveront pour nos vaches Ayrshire.
My friends, I have the privilege of going to many shows and agricultural conventions. I also have the opportunity of interacting with various Dairy Industry
players. I wish to remind you that we are entering a phase of rapid growth for
the Ayrshire breed. Effectively, cross-breeding and North American genetics are
in high demand in several countries. I know that I am repeating myself, but I
want to remind you that we are starting to get the attention of some Dairy
Industry players. Let’s make sure that we are not just a flash in the pan. We must
be proactive and commit ourselves to registering accurately all of our animals in
order to obtain further data on them. This will allow us to refine our Ayrshires
more rapidly which, in turn, will satisfy potential buyers. Our success now
depends on your concrete actions!
Mes amis, j’ai le privilège de me promener dans de nombreuses expositions et
conventions agricoles. J’ai aussi l’opportunité d’interagir avec divers intervenants
de l’industrie laitière. Je veux vous rappeler que nous amorçons une phase de
croissance avec la vache Ayrshire. En effet, le « cross-breeding » ainsi que la génétique nord-américaine est en forte croissance dans plusieurs pays. Je sais que je
me répète mais je vous le rappelle, nous commençons à soulever la curiosité de
certains intervenants de l’industrie laitière. Assurons-nous de ne pas être juste un
feu de paille. À nous d’être proactifs et de s’assurer de bien enregistrer tous nos
animaux pour obtenir davantage d’information sur ceux-ci. Ceci nous permettra
de peaufiner plus rapidement nos Ayrshires afin de satisfaire des acheteurs
potentiels. Le succès dépend maintenant de vos actions concrètes!
In this joint Review with our fellow American friends, I wish to reiterate Ayrshire
Canada’s position, which we hope to successfully fulfill together with you: Let’s
make the Ayrshire breed prosper throughout the world! We will be hosting a
booth at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin, so do not hesitate to
come see us.
En cette revue conjointe avec nos amis américains, je tiens à vous réitérer la
position d’Ayrshire Canada, laquelle nous voulons réussir de concert avec vous.
Ensemble, faisons prospérer la vache Ayrshire dans le monde! En passant, nous

In closing, on behalf of the Board of Directors and myself, I wish to offer our
most sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Ken Rose who recently left us,
much too rapidly.

First of all I would like to thank the
Ohio Ayrshire breeders for putting on a
great annual meeting in Wilmington. The
entire week was a terrific experience capped by an exceptional
national sale.
It is a great privilege and honor to serve as your president of the
U.S. Ayrshire Breeders Association. I hope to continue the progress and programs that we as an Association have experienced.
There has been some disagreement over policies implemented,
which is to be expected as change is often difficult. Only with
open, honest and civil conversation can we as a group come to an
understanding that will allow continued cooperation between
and among fellow breeders. I look forward to talking with you
about your concerns. Please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail me at

The Ayrshire breed has some great opportunities if we take them.
Breeders in Great Britain are looking for American genetics especially full blooded Ayrshires. They have dabbled in the crossbreeding pool and now are ready to go back to pure Ayrshires.
South Africa remains interested in our genetics as does Australia
and New Zealand along with others. It is up to all breeders to
capitalize on any opportunity to market Ayrshire genetics. Not
everyone wants show type. Grazers in particular are looking for
a medium sized cow with a leg made for walking long distances
that can produce large volumes of milk with excellent components. If live animals can’t be shipped into a foreign country,
embryos are often an option. There is a great demand for our
Ayrshire bulls internationally and in large commercial herds. We
have some new and exciting bulls to offer both here in the U.S.
and to the international market. In fact, I believe that we are entering a period of increasing demand for our cows. We, as breeders,
need only take every opportunity offered.
Your Association will continue making every effort to streamline
policies and practices in order to maintain efficient operations.
There may be opportunities to cooperate with other breed associations that will improve services and lower operational costs.
Any proposed change will be carefully evaluated for its effect on
the overall health of the Association. Your board is charged with
the duty to maintain the integrity of the Ayrshire breed and promote the welfare of the Association membership as a whole. The
board will continue to endeavor to make decisions that will improve the breed in its entirety.

En premier lieu, j’aimerais remercier les éleveurs Ayrshire de
l’Ohio pour l’organisation de la remarquable assemblée annuelle à
Wilmington. La semaine entière fut une expérience formidable
couronnée par une vente nationale exceptionnelle.
Ce fut un immense privilège et honneur de vous servir à titre de
président de l’association des éleveurs Ayrshire des États-Unis.
J’espère continuer le progrès et les programmes que nous, en tant
qu’association, avons connus. Il y a bien eu quelques désaccords

La race Ayrshire a devant elle de grandes opportunités; il ne suffit
que de les saisir. Des éleveurs en Grande-Bretagne sont à la
recherche de génétique américaine, particulièrement des Ayrshires
pur-sang. Ils ont tâté le terrain des croisements et sont maintenant
prêts à retourner à une race Ayrshire pure. L’Afrique du Sud est
toujours intéressée par notre génétique, tout comme le sont, entre
autres, l’Australie et la Nouvelle-Zélande. C’est maintenant aux éleveurs de saisir les nouvelles opportunités de commercialisation de
la génétique Ayrshire. Ce n’est pas tout le monde qui souhaite des
vaches d’exposition. Des éleveurs de bovins au pâturage, tout particulièrement, recherchent plutôt une vache de taille moyenne
avec une patte apte à parcourir de longues distances et qui peut
produire de grands volumes de lait avec d’excellentes composantes. Alors que les animaux vivants ne peuvent être envoyés à
l’étranger, les embryons eux demeurent souvent une option. Nos
taureaux Ayrshire sont en grande demande sur le marché international et au sein de larges troupeaux commerciaux. Nous possédons plusieurs nouveaux taureaux très intéressants qui peuvent
être offerts autant sur le marché américain que celui international.
En fait, je crois que nous entrons dans une période d’activité croissante pour notre race. Nous, éleveurs, devons saisir chaque opportunité qui nous est présentée.
Votre association continuera de faire tout son possible pour rationaliser les politiques et pratiques afin de maintenir son efficacité
opérationnelle. Des opportunités de collaboration avec d’autres
associations de race pourraient se présenter et contribuer à améliorer nos services et réduire nos coûts opérationnels. Chaque
changement proposé sera soigneusement étudié afin d’en déterminer l’impact sur la santé globale de l’association. Votre conseil

Breckrow Farm was first established in 1831 when Scottish
settlers made their way to Goshen, Nova Scotia. The family farm
has remained in the same place and is owned and operated by
three generations of Sinclairs: Bruce and Dianne Sinclair along
with their children; Peter, Samantha, Alexander and Brianna, and
Bruce’s parents; Lloyd and Bessie. With a strong Ayrshire influence in the herd they were mostly always purebred using purebred bulls. The first registered Ayrshires came from Andayr farms
in Greenhill, Nova Scotia, in the early 50’s, although animal registration on the farm did not commence until the 60’s. The farm
land is now mostly made up from two farms, Copper View
Ayrshire’s and the original Breckrow Farm. To date they farm 600
acres of land, 40 acres for corn and 60 acres for barley and oats.
They also enjoy raising North Country Cheviot and Suffolk sheep,
who are some of the best show stock in the Maritimes.
They milk around 65 to 70 cows and have about 150 head where
the percentage of the herd is 90% Ayrshire and 10% Holstein. The
farm was tie stall up until 1982 when they made a switch to free
stall and then in 1999 a new barn was built due to a fire that
destroyed the milking barn, where luckily no cows were lost.
They prefer to stay away from the Swedish red lines and are
100% North American breeding, however lately they have been
trying UK bulls instead of young sires. Their herd favourite is
their first EX cow - Breckrow Cornel Jenny-ET (EX-2E 90) who is
the dam of Breckrow BBK Naleah (VG/TB 86) and Breckrow
Reality Xandra.

Their oldest son, Peter is the seventh generation Sinclair on the farm, has
taken quite an interest in Ayrshires. Breeding and showing have become a
big part of what he loves about farming. He first started showing in 4-H and
has had success with some of his heifers such as Naleah who took grand
Ayrshire at the Nova Scotia Provincial 4-H show. Selected to go to Toronto
for the Scotiabank Hays Classic, he received Reserve Grand Champion of
the colour breeds with Naleah as well.

time at Old Home Week in

returned every year since having
great success with their heifers.
In 2011 and 2012 they received
Junior Herd and in 2012 Peter
won Junior Breeder and
Exhibitor and Reserve Grand

Dairy Showcase in Québec to
participate in another great
Ayrshire show.

La ferme Breckrow a vu le jour en 1831

where he was able to tour many Ayrshire farms that he had always wanted
to see, and took the opportunity to talk to many farmers about the breed
and showing. On the trip he became friends with James Lawrie of Cuthill
Towers Ayrshires in Scotland who invited him to travel to Scotland to stay
with their family to help out at the Agriscot show as well as work on the
farm for a few months. During his visit they toured the countryside
including Edinburgh, St. Andrews and Dunfermline, as well as several
Ayrshire farms. One of his faviorites that he visited was Peter Berresford’s
(Haydale Ayrshires) as he was using a lot of North American sires and
buying embryos from many good cows in Canada.
Peter then travelled to Northern Ireland for their winter show where he
stayed with the Hunter family of Ardmore Ayrshires and helped them at
their show. He also visited John Suffern of Ravenhill Ayrshires who also
uses a lot of North American genetics. After meeting many breeders and a
short but great trip to Northern Ireland it was back to Scotland for a couple
last drinks then back to Canada. From this trip, Peter really got a great
appreciation for the UK Ayrshire whether it was the classic older style that
he thought of when talking about Scotland Ayrshires or the newer age
Ayrshires with red Holstein bred into them. Either way he said he wouldn’t
mind having a barn full of them.
Peter’s plans are to eventually take over the family farm and his biggest focus
will be his heifers. He believes that in order to make a great dairy cow you
first have to grow a good heifer. One thing he has been doing alongside his
brother Alexander is renovating the older heifer barn and their biggest
priority is opening up the barn to create
as much air flow as possible. They are
also trying to make sure that there are
fewer heifers in each group and are
focusing on what feeds/forages work
best with their animals. By growing
bigger heifers, they are able to breed
sooner with less problems calving out
and in turn are higher producers. When
there are too many heifers, culling the
less desirable calves to make more room
for the better pedigreed animals is
sometimes the only option.
Peter’s other plans are to increase the
buying/selling of animals/embryos to
keep improving the herd and to bring
in new blood lines. He is also interested in using more herd management
tools such as Genomics.

Les Sinclairs ont pris part à la « Old Home Week » de Charlottetown, Î.-P.-É., pour
la première fois en 2007 et y sont retournés à chaque année depuis, connaissant beaucoup de succès avec leurs génisses. En 2011 et 2012, ils ont remporté

En 2012, Peter a assisté au pique-nique du club Ayrshire de l’Ontario, au cours
duquel il a pu visiter plusieurs des fermes Ayrshire qu’il rêvait de voir et saisi
l’opportunité de converser avec plusieurs éleveurs au sujet de la race et des
expositions. Au cours du voyage, il s’est lié d’amitié avec James Lawrie de la
ferme Cuthill Towers Ayrshires en Écosse, qui l’a invité à venir séjourner chez
lui en Écosse afin de l’aider lors de l’exposition Agriscot et travailler sur la ferme
pendant quelques mois. Au cours de son séjour, ils ont visité un peu du pays,
dont Edinburgh, St-Andrews et Dunfermline, ainsi que plusieurs fermes
Ayrshire. Des fermes visitées, une de ses préférées a été celle de Peter, qui utilisait beaucoup de taureaux nord-américains et achetait des embryons provenant

At the young age of 25 he is currently the Vice President of the Nova Scotia
Ayrshire Club, Director with Eastern Nova Scotia Holstein Club, and Colour
Breed Representative for the Nova Scotia 4-H Royal Winter Fair Committee.
Peter takes pride in his accomplishments and advises young Ayrshire enthusiasts to take every opportunity available, especially a chance to travel or to
attend industry workshops. Getting involved in the Ayrshire community is
sure to pay off in many ways – for example his sisters were the Ayrshire
Princesses for the 2012 Royal and the 2013 Québec Spring Show – what a
great experience for them! He also encourages youth to talk to as many
experienced breeders as possible as they are very open and enjoy advising
the next generation of dairy farmers.
Le plan d’avenir de Peter est d’éventuellement reprendre la ferme familiale et
son objectif premier sera ses génisses. Il croit que, pour obtenir une vache
laitière remarquable, il est d’abord essentiel d’élever une bonne génisse. L’un
des projets sur lesquels lui et son frère Alexander travaillent est la rénovation de
l’ancienne étable à génisses et leur priorité numéro un est d’ouvrir l’étable afin
de créer une meilleure circulation d’air. Ils essaient aussi de réduire le nombre
de génisses dans chaque groupe et portent une grande attention à l’alimentation de leurs animaux. En élevant de plus grosses génisses, celles-ci sont capables de se reproduire plus rapidement et avec moins de problèmes lors du
vêlage et produisent ainsi encore plus. Lorsque les génisses sont en trop grand
nombre, il est parfois nécessaire d’éliminer les veaux les moins intéressants pour
donner plus de place à ceux avec une meilleure génétique.
If at first you don’t succeed, try try again! Peter advises to not get discouraged, your dedication and strong work ethic is sure to lead to success in
anything you set your mind to. Peter believes that the Ayrshire is one of
best breeds to have on a dairy farm because they are such a hardy animal,
able to thrive in any environment you put them in, and are low maintenance. Someday he hopes to be able to produce some of the highest
quality Ayrshire animals around, being able to compete against any
Ayrshire, in any ring.

Si vous ne réussissez pas du premier coup, essayez de nouveau! Ne vous
découragez pas, votre dévouement et votre solide éthique de travail vous
mèneront assurément au succès si vous y mettez tout votre cœur. Peter croit que
la race Ayrshire est l’une des meilleures à avoir sur une ferme laitière car ce sont
des animaux robustes, adaptables et nécessitant peu de soins. Il espère un jour
être capable de produire des vaches Ayrshire de qualité parmi les meilleures qui
soient et de compétitionner contre n’importe quelle vache Ayrshire, dans n’importe quelle arène d’exposition.

Four Star Lucky with Holstein herdmates

To say he’s proud of the performance of his Ayrshires in the commercial herd
he manages is an understatement. Scott Brenner of Freeport, Illinois, says “I
enjoy working with them, they are nice cows to work with and don’t have
some issues as with other breeds.” He should know. Scott is the manager of
the 800-cow Hunter Haven Dairy Farm owned by Tom & Doug Block. Scott,
his wife Jennifer, and their five children, own about 45 cows which are all
mixed into this commercial herd, including his 10 registered milking Ayrshires.
Scott grew up just down the road from the commercial dairy he now manages,
on an 80-cow dairy with his parents and siblings. He remembers being in the
barn from a very early age and says, “I’ve been around cows all my life, I’d
rather be in the barn than anywhere else.” Predominately a Holstein herd, Scott
said they diversified in the 80’s and added some Jerseys. He got started with
the Ayrshires when a local herd dispersed and they purchased a young heifer,
Blues-Heaven Senior Lara, bred by Jessie Jacobs. That young heifer is the foundation animal of many of the current Ayrshire herd.

One unique aspect of this commercial operation is the use of renewable
energy. A methane digester recycles manure, creating methane gas that is
producing 80-100 kw of electricity. Some is used by the dairy and some goes

One of those hitting the show ring this summer is a fall calf, Sharwards Jennie.
She’s a Prime daughter from the number 47 CPI cow in the breed, Sharwards
Normandin Jodie. Their thirteen-year-old daughter, Madasyn, has had fun
showing her this summer bringing home either Junior Champion or Res. Junior
Champion at all the shows they attended. Jodie, an 89-point Duo Star
Normandin daughter was recently lost but not before completing a two-yearold record over 22,000M and over 28,000M as a three-year-old. Jodie was
purchased from Darryl Keehner.

One of their favorite families comes from the previously mentioned foundation
heifer. A Covey Farms Reno daughter, Four Star Reno Lexus has two daughters

une génisse d’automne. C’est une fille de Prime et de la #47 dans la race selon
l’index « CPI », Sharwards Normandin Jodie. Leur fille de 13 ans, Madasyn, a eu
beaucoup de plaisir à l’exposer cet été, remportant soit la Championne Junior
ou la Championne Junior de Réserve à toutes les expositions auxquelles ils ont
participé. Jodie, un sujet de 89 points issu de Duo-Star Normandin, les a quittés
récemment, mais non sans avoir réalisé avant un record à 2 ans de plus de

special to us. We actually just lost her at 14 years old this spring. She gave us

my herd,” said Scott. Lexus’ daughter, Four Star Lulu, is a 90-point Strathburn
Stardom daughter with 23,190M 902F 698P at 5-00. Her Baltimore daughter,
Four Star Lucky is 85 as a two-year-old, fresh in March and milking over 65
pounds a day. Another Lexus daughter, Four Star Lyric, is sired by Baltimore
and made over 18,000M as a two-year-old with 825F and 560P. A granddaughter of Lexus, Four Star Lucy, scored 88 points this summer.
Scott is excited about some young heifers coming up through the line. He says,
“We’ve been fortunate. The cows we purchased, with the exception of Oliva,
were all pregnant and the Good Lord was shining on us because we got heifers
out of almost all of them. We are so excited about the young stuff. It is going
to bode well for us to do what we want to do with our herd with improving
genetics and good solid cows.”
The Brenners are currently using Prime, Burdette, Conn and a young sire,
Covey-P&A Conn Rattler, on their herd. Their current Ayrshires average around
21,000M with 4.3%F and 3.1%P. They are just getting involved in Ayrshire
programs and classified the seven cows that were eligible this spring. This was
Scott’s first experience with linear appraisal and he was pleased with how they
scored. They have purchased a fair number of cows to expand their herd and
can’t take credit for the breeding, but they are pleased that their BAA is 104 for
those seven cows.
When asked about future plans, Scott said that Tom and Doug are positioning
themselves into retirement and some discussion has been held on a transition
into some type of ownership at some point. But, he said the family still owns
the family farm where he grew up so if opportunity doesn’t come at the large
dairy, they could do something at the family farm. After the years of being at
the commercial dairy, he is hoping he will be able to work something out
there. There is also the next generation to think of. The boys enjoy being at
the farm – especially the 9 year olds, Mason and Trevor. Scott said they are
excited about farming. One day Scott hopes they have the opportunity to do it
if they want to. He chuckled when he said the oldest son, Brian, who is 14,
wants to be an NBA basketball player so hopefully he can support it all.
Madasyn wants to be a teacher and Marianna, at 11, wanted to be a doctor, he
said, until her sister cut her head open and she saw blood. Now her future
plans have changed!
Regardless of what they do, the family plans to continue building their Ayrshire
herd. Scott said, “We are not just milking to milk cows, we appreciate looking
at good cows.” Watch for more from the Brenners as they continue to hit the
tanbark trails, breed sound, functional, high- producing Ayrshires and build a
future for their children in the dairy industry.

90 points avec 23 190 lbs de lait, 902G, 698P à 5-00. Sa fille Four Star Lucky,
issue de Baltimore, est classifiée 85 à l’âge de 2 ans, fraîche vêlée de mars et

Scott est emballé par quelques jeunes génisses gravissant les échelons. « Nous
avons été chanceux. Les vaches que nous avons achetées, à l’exception
d’Olivia, étaient toutes gestantes et le Bon Dieu veillait sur nous parce que la
grande majorité d’entre elles nous ont donné des génisses. Nous sommes très
enthousiastes face à cette relève. Ça promet pour nous; nous pourrons faire ce
que bon nous semble avec notre troupeau afin d’améliorer la génétique et
produire de bonnes vaches solides, » rapporte-t-il.
Les Brenner utilisent présentement Prime, Burdette, Conn et Cover-P&A Conn
Rattler, un jeune taureau, dans leur troupeau. La moyenne actuelle de leurs
Ayrshire est d’environ 21 000 lbs avec 4.3%G et 3.1%P. Ils viennent de
commencer à prendre part aux programmes Ayrshire et ont classifié les sept
vaches qui y étaient éligibles au printemps. C’était la première expérience de
Scott avec les évaluations linéaires et il est très satisfit du pointage obtenu. Ils
ont acheté un bon nombre de vaches pour agrandir le troupeau et ne peuvent
prendre le crédit pour l’élevage, mais ils sont appréciatifs du « BAA » de 104

faut aussi penser à la prochaine génération. Les garçons adorent passer du
temps à la ferme, surtout ceux de 9 ans, Mason et Trevor. Scott dit qu’ils
adorent l’agriculture et espère qu’ils auront l’opportunité un jour d’être agriculteurs s’ils le désirent. Il rit lorsqu’il rapporte que son plus vieux, Brian, âgé de
14 ans, rêve de devenir un joueur de basketball dans la NBA, espérant qu’il
puisse tous les soutenir financièrement. Madasyn aimerait devenir enseignante
et Marianna, 11 ans, voulait devenir médecin, dit-il, jusqu’à ce que sa sœur se
coupe à la tête et qu’elle voit du sang. Ses futurs plans ont maintenant changé!
Four Star Lucky
Peu importe ce qu’il arrive, la famille planifie de continuer à agrandir le
troupeau Ayrshire. « Nous ne trayons pas des vaches juste pour traire des
vaches; nous aimons regarder des belles vaches, » dit Scott. Surveillez les
prochains développements de la famille Brenner alors qu’ils continuent d’exposer, d’élever des Ayrshire solides, fonctionnelles et hautement performantes

The Ayrshire Breed Requires
an International Perspective
Genetic improvement in any dairy cattle breed requires active
participation by breeders in a vast array of breed improvement
programs. This is especially true with Ayrshires given the relatively small population sizes in most of the countries around
the world where this breed has importance. In North America,
the Ayrshire breed associations of Canada and United States
have a long history of communication and cooperation. This
approach has clear benefits to breeders on both sides of the
border and must not only be continued but expanded!
Nationally, each country has their own performance recording
programs, including herdbook registration, milk recording and
type classification, as well as their own national genetic evaluation system. In general, the same AI organizations are involved in both Canada and the United States for offering semen
from Ayrshire sires, both progeny proven and young bulls.
Most breeders in both countries are quite familiar with reading
and understanding information such as lactation and classification records as well as genetic evaluations as expressed domestically. Simply stated, the world of Ayrshires in North America
is relatively small with great cooperation between countries.
The arrival of the genomics era has created an even greater
benefit of cross-country programs and cooperation. For the
first time in history, Canada and the United States have agreed
to share a new source of data collected on Ayrshires in each
country. This new “data” are genotypes resulting from a laboratory analysis of DNA from submitted animals. As a consequence of a significant research project conducted at the
University of Guelph in recent years, which involved a cash
contribution of $20,000 from Ayrshire Canada, there are now
525 Ayrshire sires that are progeny proven in Canada (and
most likely in the US as well) already genotyped. Thanks to a
genotyping project at USDA in the United States, another group
of nearly 100 progeny proven sires were also genotyped. This
group of proven sires serves as the reference population in
both countries for the estimation of genomic evaluations for all
genotyped animals in Canada and the United States. The sharing of Ayrshire genotypes means that Canadian Dairy Network
(CDN) in Canada and the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding
(CDCB) in the United States both have access for providing
genomic evaluations for Ayrshires expressed on both country
scales. To-date, approximately 500 Ayrshire cows and heifers
in Canada have been genotyped and have an official genomic
evaluation. On the US side, genomic evaluations became official in 2013 so the genotyping of female Ayrshires is now starting to grow.

of genetic progress, more genotypes are required. CDN is examining two main options for significantly increasing the size of
the reference population, which include (1) obtaining genotypes for foreign proven sires via exchange agreements with
other countries, and (2) adding genotyped cows that have lactation and classification records in Canada to the reference
group. Once either or both of these options can be realized,
Ayrshire breeders will be able to reap increased benefits of
genotyping their heifers and cows.
For decades now, the Interbull Centre located in Uppsala,
Sweden, has been responsible for providing international bull
evaluations for dairy cattle breeds including Holstein, Red
Dairy Cattle, Jersey, Brown Swiss, Guernsey and Simmental.
Analysis of Ayrshire bull populations is included within the
category of Red Dairy Cattle. In total, Interbull provides MACE
evaluations for over 14,000 bulls from 14 different populations
genetically related to the Ayrshire breed in Canada and the
United States. Of these, roughly 1,000 are progeny proven in
North America. The largest populations contributing to this
international bull evaluation service include Denmark, Finland,
Sweden and Norway with a combined total of approximately
10,000 progeny proven sires, not all of which would be considered Ayrshire however. Other participating countries, in
decreasing order of bull numbers include New Zealand,
Australia, Latvia, United Kingdom, Germany, Estonia, Lithuania
and South Africa. Based on the analysis by Interbull of genetic relationships and common bulls across countries, those
populations closest to Ayrshires in North America include some
from Scandinavia, especially the Swedish Red and Finnish Red
breeds, as well as the United Kingdom, South Africa and, to a
lesser extent, Australia.
Even countries with the largest population of Ayrshires are not
big enough to have accurate genomic evaluation on their own.
In essence, genomics has become a major motivation for
increased cooperation across countries. This is not only a
requirement between Canada and the United States but one
that will need the cooperation from every population of red
dairy cattle genetically related to Ayrshires! As the famous
quote by Aristotle states, “The whole is greater than the sum of
its parts”!

Depuis déjà plusieurs décennies, le centre Interbull situé à

les plus proches des Ayrshire en Amérique du Nord comprennent
certaines races de la Scandinavie, particulièrement la Rouge
danoise et la Rouge finlandaise, ainsi que du Royaume-Uni, de
l’Afrique du Sud et, dans une moindre mesure, de l’Australie.
Même des pays avec la plus importante population Ayrshire ne
sont pas assez grands pour obtenir des évaluations génomiques
précises par eux-mêmes. Essentiellement, la génomique est devenue une motivation majeure en vue d’une collaboration accrue
entre les pays. Cela n’est pas seulement une exigence entre le
Canada et les États-Unis, mais c’en est une qui nécessitera la
coopération de chaque population de bovins laitiers rouges

It is with great sadness that we have
learned of the passing of Ken Rose last
August 30th at the age of 50.
A man who loved the Ayrshire breed and made famous the Rosayre herd
from Mountain, Ontario, as much for its Show Champions as for its
Performance Champions. Thanks to his work, he collected year after
year Production Awards but also Master Breeder Awards. To his fellow
breeders, Ken was a great breeder and had an exceptional talent for
breeding, and brought international recognition, within the Ayrshire
breed, to his Rosayre herd, whose uniformity and quality were quite
unusual. This is also why he was recognized and respected as a Judge
by his fellow breeders.
A man of vision with great marketing skills who never hesitated to make
deals over quality animals both at Ayrshire and private sales; he had a
sharp eye. Proud Ayrshire breeder and breed promoter, he never missed
a chance to promote. Ken was always happy to host visitors at the farm
or give some of his time or advice when asked.
C’est avec une énorme tristesse que nous avons appris le décès de
Ken Rose le 30 août dernier à l’âge de 50 ans.
Un homme passionné de la race Ayrshire qui a rendu célèbre le troupeau Rosayre de Mountain, Ontario autant pour ses championnes aux
expositions que pour ses championnes productrices. Grâce à son travail, il accumulait année après année les prix de production et bien
sûr celui de Maître-éleveur. Pour ses pairs, Ken était un éleveur remarquable et possédait un talent exceptionnel pour l’élevage et a su
amené une reconnaissance internationale dans la race Ayrshire au
troupeau ROSAYRE dont l’uniformité et la qualité étaient inhabituelles.
C’est pourquoi également qu’il était reconnu et estimé par ses collègues éleveurs à titre de juge.
Un homme de vision et de marketing qui n’hésitait jamais à transiger des
sujets de qualité autant dans les ventes Ayrshire que privées et qui possédait un œil d’expert. Fier éleveur Ayrshire et promoteur de la race, il
ne manquait jamais une opportunité d’en faire la promotion. Ken était
toujours heureux de recevoir des visiteurs à la ferme où donner de son
temps ou conseils lorsqu’on lui demandait.
Même si la ferme prenait beaucoup de son temps, il accordait une place
privilégiée au hockey, sport dont il affectionnait tout particulièrement.
Un père dévoué à sa famille et fier de ses enfants. Il leur manquera
profondément à tous.
Nous offrons nos plus sincères condoléances à la famille.

to hockey, a sport which he loved greatly.
A father dedicated to his family and proud of his children. They will all
miss him deeply.

Surrounded by all of her descendants, Rose Pelletier Lagacé celebrated her 100th birthday last August 3rd at a garden party. For over
60 years, Rose shared her life with Jean-Paul Lagacé, a StHyacinthe Ayrshire breeder, deceased in 1998. Her children,
grand-children, great-grand-children, and great-great-grandchildren expressed their love for her and thank her for this unforgettable day.
