Une des clés de la réussite est d’apporter non Nutritional education and physical activity for young children Obesity, which was ignored by the medical profession for a long time, has now become a disease in its own right and is being studied in every country. In 2010, about 40 million children in the world aged below 5 years were obese or overweight. T his phenomenon, observed in North America during the years -, lost no time in crossing the Atlantic to reach Europe and, since, the emerging countries, particularly in southern Asia (China and India). It is obviously important not to confuse under-nutrition, which still exists in some countries for example in Africa, with malnutrition (eating badly), which is the problem in countries where the GDP is often on the increase. France is concerned and so are the other European countries. We can REVUE ● see a rate of obesity (around %) and overweight (about %) in young French children (- years) and also in children born in France to immigrant parents. This is why it is important to study eating behaviour and life styles together from the earliest age, since prevention is the priority. This starts with nutrition for pregnant women and their lifestyle (breathing techniques, yoga, walking and so on to be practised daily). The prenatal period is often crucial from the point of view of the future obesity of the LE SPORT EN ENTREPRISE L’animation du réseau européen « Sport et Santé » et sa publication bénéficient du soutien de Nestlé Waters. The milk and the food given a child are fundamental for his/her future growth (the stage where weight increases fourfold and height doubles). The right age for introducing solid food is a matter of current debate, but scientific bodies avoid giving fixed recommendations because nutritional problems have multiple causes. Different foods are gradually assimilated until the age of three, when the child usually eats a little of everything with the rest of the family. It would seem that the first moments of a child’s life until three months and after three years are the danger periods for concentrating body fat. Obesity at that age often indicates obesity later on, accompanied by various diseases such as diabetes and cardiac problems. This is why it is necessary to be vigilant and to teach the child to move about as soon as possible: to teach him/her to play in an active way, to get regular physical exercise from the age of , and to alternate indoor and outdoor games – the benefits of these recommendations are clear. It is basically about fun (encouraging the child to enjoy himself). It also varies depending on the social and geographical position of the family. One of the keys to success lies in giving not only the woman, but also the professionals involved in caring for young children, better nutritional and behavioural education concerning the mother and her child. Individuals cannot be forced but they can be encouraged to do something if the needs of the human body are explained to them: nutrition and life style behaviours are closely linked. Intervening at the - year stage seems to be a priority because it has a decisive influence on future development. SPORT AND CITIZENSHIP NETWORK
