Qatar Total French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge for three-year-old colts
Group 1 PA, Friday October 1st at Saint-Cloud
BASEQ AL KHALEDIAH WINS IN GREAT STYLE
Dubai Heros (Amer) was supposed to redeem himself after having finished a courageous third in the
Group 1 PA Prix Kesberoy, run in extremely wet conditions on the 14th of August at Deauville. But
then La Teste based trainer Jean-François Bernard, who seemingly cannot do anything wrong this
season, came out with an “ace up his sleeve”, when he saddled Baseq Al Khalediah KSA (Tiwaiq),
who had only run for the first time on
the 12th of September at Mont-deMarsan. In a race, where Tamar
Thabeth (Dormane) set the early pace,
Baseq Al Khalediah KSA was
patiently ridden in the back of the
field, waiting patiently to be unleashed
by his jockey Christophe-Patrice
Lemaire. When the field entered the
final straight, Forgehill Cosaque
(Dormane) was the first to quicken,
followed by the Julian Smart trained
colt Harran ASF GB (Burning Sand)
and Aaber ASF QA (Burning Sand).
But with 400 meters to go, Baseq Al
Khalediah was launched and easily took the lead, even though his jockey had to pull his stick out so
that he wouldn’t stop in front. Behind him, Aaber ASF managed to fill the position of runner-up,
while Forgehill Cosaque finished third, followed by Musharab (Njewman) who had also been
launched when entering the straight.
The winning trainer was not that surprised when he said:
“I was very surprised when he got beaten at Mont-deMarsan. Apparently the race didn’t go to plan that time. I
had given the orders to wait and to give him some cover.
We knew what he could do in the morning.” Yet, this was
a big step up in category and the trainer added: “Yes that
is true, but these are Purebred Arabians and in my
opinion the field was not very strong and I couldn’t
understand why he was beaten on his first start. Mont-deMarsan remains a difficult track where many good horses
get beat. He didn’t have a difficult race though.”
Xavier-Thomas Demeaulte, trainer of the beaten favorit Dubaï Heros, was naturally disappointed
when he said: “He has no excuse as he had a good race but just didn’t respond in the final straight. I
have no idea as to why he didn’t respond. His jockey told me that he quickly felt that the horse had
nothing left in the tank and he the opted not to give him a hard race. This has no influence on future
plans, but we will have to find out the reason for this bad performance.”
Let’s hope that he quickly comes back to his former self.

BASEQ AL KHALEDIAH S’IMPOSE DANS UN BON STYLE
C’était le rachat supposé de Dubai Heros (Amer), qui avait pris une courageuse 3e place dans le Prix
Kesberoy (Gr1 PA) à Deauville le 14 août dernier sous un déluge de pluie. Et puis, l’entraîneur de La
Teste Jean-François Bernard, décidemment incontournable cette saison, a sorti un « atout de sa
manche » avec le poulain Baseq Al Khalediah KSA (Tiwaiq), qui n’avait débuté que le 12 septembre
dernier à Mont-de-Marsan. Dans une
course emmenée par Tamar Thabeth
(Dormane),
celui-ci
« dormait »
patiemment à l’arrière-garde sous la
poigne de Christophe-Patrice Lemaire,
attendant son heure. Alors que les
choses sérieuses commençaient à la
sortie du tournant final, Forgehill
Cozaque(Dormane) passait à l’attaque
suivi par les protégés de Julian Smart,
Harran ASF GB (Burning Sand) et
Aaber ASF QA (Burning Sand). C’est
à 400 mètres du poteau que surgissait
alors dans une action significative,
Baseq Al Khalediah. Il prenait
facilement l’avantage même si ensuite son jockey devait lui mettre « une petite claque » pour ne pas se
relâcher jusqu’au poteau, Aaber ASF réussissant à s’emparer de la 2e place devant Forgehill Cozaque
et Musharab (Njewman) qui avait filé les premiers dans la ligne droite.
L’entraîneur victorieux n’était pas pour autant étonné de la
victoire de son poulain : « J’étais très surpris qu’il soit
battu en débutant à Mont-de-Marsan la dernière fois. Cela
ne s’était pas très bien passé apparemment. J’avais donné
les consignes d’être patient et de le cacher surtout. On a vu
tout ce qu’il laissait montrer au travail le matin. »
Pour autant, il montait nettement de catégorie cette fois-ci :
« C’est vrai mais ce sont des pur-sang arabes et le lot, à
mon avis, est tout à fait ordinaire et je ne comprenais pas
qu’il soit battu pour ses débuts. Mont-de-Marsan reste un
hippodrome spécial où beaucoup de bons chevaux ont été
battus. Il n’avait pas eu une course dure d’ailleurs. »
Xavier-Thomas Demeaulte, l’entraîneur du favori, Dubai Héros, était lui forcément déçu : « Il a eu
un bon parcours mais n’a pas répondu dans la ligne droite. Je n’ai pas d’explications. Son jockey m’a
dit qu’il avait rapidement senti que le cheval n’avait pas de « gaz » et il a préféré poser les mains.
Cela ne compromet pas la suite de sa carrière mais il va falloir connaître la raison. »
Espérons que cela ne soit que partie remise.
