JODOROWSKY’S DUNE

Avec ses films EL TOPO et LA MONTAGNE SACRÉE, le réalisateur chilien Alejandro Jodorowsky lance
et en fin de compte définit le phénomène des midnight movies, ces films décalés diffusés en fin de
soirée. En 1975, il se lance dans son projet le plus ambitieux en date. Avec une distribution composée
de son propre fils de 12 ans, Brontis, aux côtés d'Orson Welles, Mick Jagger, David Carradine et
Salvador Dali, sur une musique de Pink Floyd et avec une esthétique signée par les artistes les plus
provocateurs de l'époque, comme HR Giger et Jean Giraud, alias Mœbius, l'adaptation du romanphare de la science-fiction DUNE, de Frank Herbert, s'apprête à changer à jamais la face du cinéma.
« Pour moi, Dune devait être l’avènement d'un nouveau dieu. Je voulais créer quelque chose de
sacré, de libre, avec une vision unique. Je voulais ouvrir les esprits ! »

Pendant deux ans, Jodo et son équipe de « guerriers spirituels » travaillent nuit et jour à la tâche
titanesque de mettre en images le monde fabuleux de DUNE, à travers plus de 3000 story-boards, de
nombreux tableaux, des costumes incroyables, sur la base d'un scénario excentrique, aussi émouvant
que puissant.
« À ce stade, s'il avait fallu me couper les deux bras pour faire ce film, je l'aurais fait. J'étais même
prêt à donner ma vie pour le tourner. »

Comme l'explique le producteur de Jodorowsky, Michel Seydoux : « Cela aurait dû suffire. Mais tel
n'a pas été le cas. »
S'appuyant sur les interviews d'artistes légendaires et visionnaires comme Hans Ruedi Giger
(designer, ALIEN), Gary Kurtz (producteur, STAR WARS) et Nicolas Winding Refn (réalisateur, DRIVE et
ONLY GOD FORGIVES), sur un entretien intime et honnête avec Jodorowsky lui-même filmé sur une
période de trois ans, sans oublier la reconstitution inédite du space opera psychédélique et
hallucinant de Jodo (animé par Syd Garon, récompensé aux Emmy Awards), le film de Frank Pavich
fait enfin revivre l'épopée du « plus grand film qui n'ait jamais été tourné ».
In 1975, Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky, whose films EL TOPO and THE HOLY
MOUNTAIN launched and ultimately defined the midnight movie phenomenon, began
work on his most ambitious project yet. Starring his own 12 year old son Brontis alongside
Orson Welles, Mick Jagger, David Carradine and Salvador Dali, featuring music by Pink
Floyd and art by some of the most provocative talents of the era, including HR Giger
and Jean ‘Moebius’ Giraud, Jodorowsky’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi
novel DUNE was poised to change cinema forever.

For two years, Jodo and his team of “spiritual warriors” worked night and day on the
massive task of creating the fabulous world of DUNE: over 3,000 storyboards, numerous
paintings, incredible costumes, and an outrageous, moving and powerful script.
“In that time, I say, if I need to cut my arms in order to make that picture,
I will cut my arms. I was even ready to die doing that.”

In the words of Jodorowsky’s producer, Michel Seydoux, “It should have been enough.
But it wasn’t.”
Through interviews with legends and luminaries including HR Giger (artist, ALIEN), Gary
Kurtz (producer, STAR WARS) and Nicolas Winding Refn (director, DRIVE and ONLY GOD
FORGIVES), and an intimate and honest conversation with Jodorowsky filmed over the
course of three years, director Pavich’s film - featuring never-before-seen realizations of
Jodo’s mind-blowing psychedelic space opera (animated by Emmy Award nominated
Syd Garon) - finally unearths the full saga of ‘The Greatest Movie Never Made’.
