Boletín informativo de la Hermandad de la Costa
Bulletin d'information des Frères de la Côte * Newsletter of the Brotherhood of the Coast
Notiziario dei Fratelli della Costa
Vol. VIII/1
III.2002
Editorial: No 20!
C'était
en 1994, il y a 8
ans déjà. Nous
nous trouvions à quelqu'uns dans
un car, au Chili, à l'occasion du 3e
Zafarrancho mondial. L'idée de
The Tortuga Post naquit de
conversations entre Jill Jones, qui
rédigeait alors First Watch, Aldo
Devoto le rédacteur de Abordajes
et moi-même, responsable de la
défunte Gazette océane. Il nous
semblait que la Confrérie manquait
d'un moyen de communication
international simple, facile à
réaliser et surtout peu coûteux:
l'idée de notre newsletter était née.
Elle fut soumise à l'Assemblée des
Capitaines qui l'accepta. Et depuis
lors, The Tortuga Post paraît
fidèlement: de deux éditions de
quatre pages par année, elle a
atteint 4 numéros de huit pages…
pour se stabiliser aujourd'hui à
trois numéros. Au début elle était
encore envoyée par la poste. Puis,
après quelques essais, elle a pris le
virage du numérique. The Tortuga
Post a même fait des émules qui
paraissent aujourd'hui avec plus de
luxe… Mais la force de la modeste
newsletter réside sans doute dans
sa devise: plus c'est simple, plus
cela a de chance de résister au
temps. Longue vie à The Tortuga
Post!
This
was 1994, 8 years ago
already. Some of us
were riding in a bus during the
Third World Zaffarancho in Chile.
The concept of The Tortuga Post
came out of a conversation that Jill
Jones, who was at the time
producing First Watch, Aldo
Devoto the editor of Abordajes
entonces de la desaparecida
Gazette Océane. Convenimos que
and myself, in charge of the late
"Gazette Oceane" were having. We
felt that the Brotherhood was
lacking a simple mean of
communication at the international
level, which should be easy to
produce and most importantly
inexpensive : this gave birth to the
idea of producing The Tortuga
Post. The idea was submitted to the
Assembly of Captains which
adopted it. Since then, The Tortuga
Post is regularly published : from
two issues of four pages per year, it
grew to four issues of eight pages
per year... to settle down to three
issues per year. At the beginning, it
used to be distributed by mail.
Then, after a trial period, the
distribution became electronic. The
example of The Tortuga Post was
even followed by some other
publications, sometimes even more
sophisticated....But the strength of
our modest newsletter probably
stems from its motto : the simpler it
is, the more probabilities it has to
stand the test of time. Long life to
The Tortuga Post !
la Hermandad requería de un medio
de comunicación internacional,
simple, fácil de confeccionar y
especialmente económico : la idea
del The Tortuga Post había nacido.
Fue sometida a la Asamblea de
Capitanes que la validaron. Y
desde entonces, The Tortuga Post
aparece fielmente: De dos ediciones
de cuatro páginas por año, alcanzó
a cuatro números de ocho páginas,
para estabilizarse hoy con tres
números. Al principio fue enviado
por correo postal. Después de
algunas pruebas, tomó la forma
digital actual. The Tortuga Post
incluso fue inspiración para
publicaciones que aparecen hoy
con más lujo. Pero la fuerza de
nuestro modesto boletín de noticias
es indudablemente su lema: cuanto
más simple es, más probable que
perdure en el tiempo.
Desde
1994,
han
transcurrido
8
años. En esa ocasión nos
encontrábamos en Chile en el
Tercer Zafarrancho Mundial. La
idea del The Tortuga Post emergió
de las conversaciones entre Jill
Jones, que edita el First Watch,
Aldo Devoto que redactaba
Abordajes y yo, responsable
¡Larga vida a The Tortuga Post !

Ahoy there! Brothers and Captives
of the World!
The good ship ‘Zafarrancho’ 2002
is on course to be a monumental
event for the brotherhood, full of
the renowned excitement, fun &
frolics always enjoyed by the
pirate brothers of the world.
Thanks to all brothers & captives
who’s names are already on the
crew list. Following popular
demand, minor adjustments have
now been made to the programme
to extend the booking date. Those
still considering joining in the
festivities should book urgently for
the biggest pirate event in four
years.
You will be pleased to know that
we have provisionally booked a
number of rooms on your behalf at
a group discount rate in a couple of
big hotels in the centre of town.
And remember, for those of you
voyaging to the Zafarrancho over
the high seas, there will be free
berthing from 17th to 23rd inclusive,
for your yacht, available at nearby
Southsea Marina, venue of Day 6
Farewell party.
Secoin has sent the provisional
agenda to all National Captains for
the three International Captain’s
meetings being held during the
Zafarrancho. Any Captains unable
to attend the event will be given
the opportunity to send another
brother in their place. There is
already good representation from
around the world so make sure
your flag is raised at this important
summit.
We, your UK Brothers and our
Captives are looking forward to
giving you a traditional British
welcome when your visit our
shores in June, this year.
Assembly of the National
Captains: the following papers
have already been distributed or
will be distributed soon:
Agenda, discussion paper on the
Assembly of National Captains,
terms of reference for SECOIN,
SECOIN's report on 4 years of
activities.
After their distribution, they will
also be available on SECOIN's web
page. Check:
//groups.yahoo.com/groups/
secoin/files
This page is the place where to
find our up-dated Directory, a full
collection of the Tortuga Post, and,
last but not least: the discussion
papers for our next meeting in
Britain.
Bad news: our plans to produce a
CD in occasion of the Zaf have
been postponed, due to financial
problems. The idea, however, is
still in the air…

L’endroit exact et tous les détails
du programme n’étaient pas
arrêtés à la date limite imposée par
la sortie de ce Tortuga Post. Mais
il y aura des mouillages pour tous
les bateaux des Frères qui

audacieuses pour arriver à temps
aux festivités. Les valeureux Frères
et charmantes Captives trop
éloignés pour arriver à la voile
seront fraternellement accueillis et
logés
dans
les

Notre modeste Boucan du Salon
Nautique du 1er décembre n’était
qu’un essai pour roder notre
New International Lookout
A rotation of office of the National
Secretary / International Look-out
has been decided by the German
Tables, chaired by the Commodore
Claus Groth, during the 25th
Anniversary Zafarrancho of Table

in Düsseldorf). This function goes
from the Table Bavaria to the
Table Lübeck-Travemünde where

SENEGAL
Les Frères du Sénégal caressaient
l'espoir d'organiser un jour un grand
Zaf africain qui aurait permis aux
Frères étrangers de connaître non
seulement Dakar, mais aussi la
superbe Casamance. Hélas! Les
circonstances politiques, c.à.d. la
sécurité des personnes ne le
permet plus. Ils viennent donc de
renoncer, la mort dans l'âme.
