As is noted in the preface to this small book, a group
of graduating third-year students at the St. Loyes School
of Occupational Therapy, Exeter, proposed in 1972 that
the information that they had gathered during their
total training be compiled into a small text, and this
spiral-bound pocket-sized book is the result. The book
deals solely with physical remediation, and each of the
basic fifteen chapters briefly notes some medical information, and then details the aims of treatment and lists
and describes early, middle and late stages and appropriate activities. Upper and lower limb, hand and and
back injuries are followed by chapters devoted to Nerve
Lesions, Hemiplegia and Paraplegia, Head injuries and
several major disease entities. The final chapter on Joint
Examination includes a selection of useful charts, and
the Appendix has many sketches of both weaving and
printing adaptations, a simple practical upper limb
functional test, a Home visit and a Wheelchair check
list.
The book is directed towards students on hospital
practice, and those graduates requiring a quick aidememoire, and I have no doubt that it will prove to be
useful and popular. Both the authors and the publishers,
in fact, deserve to be congratulated on this achievement.

Comme il est mentionné dans la préface de ce livre,
un groupe d'étudiants de 3ième année de l'école d'ergothérapie St-Loyes, se proposait en 1972 de compiler
toute l'information pertinente reçue lors de leur entraînement. Il en sortit un petit bouquin très intéressant
consacré spécialement aux affections physiques. Dans
les quinze chapitres de base, on trouve de brèves informations médicales, on élabore sur les buts de traitement
et l'on fait même une liste et une description d'activités
appropriées en début, milieu et fin de traitement. Les
chapitre sur les membres supérieurs et inférieurs, sur
la main et le dos, sont suivis par les chapitres consacrés
aux lésions nerveuses, à l'hémiplégie, la paraplégie, les
traumatismes craniens et la gamme d'affections majeures.
Le dernier chapitre, sur l'examen des articulations,
comprend une liste très pratique de données. À l'appendice, on trouve un bon nombre d'esquisses illustrant
des adaptations possibles pour le tissage et l'imprimerie,
une formule simple et pratique d'évaluation fonctionnelle du membre supérieur et une liste de rappel concernant les visites à domicile et les fauteuils roulants.
Ce petit livre s'avérera un aide mémoire très pratique
tant pour les étudiants, les soignants que pour les
gradués.
Les auteurs et l'éditeur méritent, à coup sûr, des
félicitations pour leur réalisation.
