This makes it possible to build key functions for integrated optics, like polarization separation. Indeed, many of the functions used in guided optics are polarization-sensitive: the TE and TM modes do not generally have the same propagation properties. Separating the polarizations makes it possible to treat them separately and produce a device that has the same behavior for every polarization of the input light. This technology of polymer waveguides also enables to add new functionality into the waveguide and it will be interesting to study the electro-optic and magneto-optic effects. The proposed PhD thesis work consists in the following points, from the more concrete to the more exploratory: Use the technology of anisotropic waveguides to build integrated optics functions, for example a polarization-insensitive wavelength filter Use this technology to explore the possibility of fabricating an electro-optic modulator, working with the Pockels effect, for fast light modulation Explore the possibility to integrate magnetic nanoparticles in a polymer waveguide for using the Farady effect. The innovative technology that we developed opens several ways, which will be interesting to explore in terms of applications. The PhD student will benefit from the necessary human and technical resources that will allow an efficient progress in the work. Supervision: The thesis director will be Laurent Dupont and the research will be followed by Olivier Castany. Work done at CCLO will benefit form the help of Michel Gadonna and Isabelle Hardy. Funding: Research grant from the laboratory. Skills required for the applicant: The applicant needs a good comprehension of chemistry, knowledge on materials, especially polymers, an interest for microtechnology and micro-optics, and real experimental skills. A mixed profile physics/chemistry is preferred. Contacts: [email protected], [email protected]
