Como muertos... mais pas vraiment !
Como Muertos est le genre de groupe qu'on voit sur une affiche, et
pour lequel on n'a pas vraiment envie de rester si on n'aime pas le
death, le black et autres tranches un peu sanglantes du metal. Sauf
que si on ne reste pas pour admirer ces petits français tout poisseux,
on risque de rater quelque-chose ! C'est à tout autre chose que l'on
assiste lorsqu'on prend le temps de découvre le groupe en live, et
ensuite sur album, car on ne peut qu'avoir envie d'en savoir plus !

Sponge (Rock'N'Balls) : Beaucoup de gens ne connaissent pas encore Como Muertos.
Comment pouvez-vous introduire votre groupe auprès du public ? D'où venez-vous, et
comment est né votre projet ?
El Doctor : Le projet est néé en 2007 entre moi et le tout premier batteur D qui joue
uniquement sur notre tout premier Mcd. Nous voulions juste nous faire plaisir et mélanger
deux choses que nous adorions, à savoir une musique extrême qui groove et l'univers des
films d'horreur. El Maestro nous a ensuite rejoint pendant l'enregistrement de ce fameux
premier Mcd, et aprés avoir finalisé celui ci et pris un peu de recul la dessus, je me suis dit
qu'il y avait vraiment quelque chose de bien à faire. Nous avons donc pris les choses de
façon un peu plus sérieuse, recruté du monde, et nous voilà avec notre premier album que
nous sommes très fiers de présenter!! Il y a bien sûr eu quelques petits changements depuis
l'enregistrement de l'album, sinon ce ne serait pas marrant... Mike est parti et a été remplacé
par El Satanico, et un second guitariste est enfin arrivé de façon permanente en la personne
d El Leñador macabro.
S : J'ai découvert pour la première fois Como Muertos lors de l'Iguanorock Festival en
Belgique il y a quelques semaines, et je dois dire qu'au départ j'étais un peu réticent
par rapport à l'image visuel du groupe car je ne suis pas fan de la culture death... mais
finalement j'ai été assez bluffé car votre musique est très rock'n'roll et pas vraiment
death metal ! Quelles sont les influences des membres du groupe pour jouer une
musique aussi éclectique ?
El Leñador macabro : On a tous un bagage musical très ouverts sur pleins de styles
différents, allant du classique aux musiques extrêmes, mais ce qui nous rassemble tous dans
ce projet, c’est cet esprit rock’n roll que nous avons en nous et que nous tenons à restituer
sur scène.
S : Pourquoi avoir choisi de chanter en espagnol et pas en français ou en anglais ?
El Leñador macabro : Parce que c’est une langue gutturale qui donne une atmosphère très
particulière correspondant vraiment à l’esprit de Como Muertos, et par pure coïncidence,
c’est la langue maternelle d’El Maestro !
S : Même si ça fonctionne pas mal en live, Como Muertos a une imagerie un peu
« kitsch » sur scène, avec les faux membres ensanglantés, le tablier d'El Doctor, etc...
Pensez-vous que cette imagerie donne un avantage certain à votre groupe, et que votre
musique ne fonctionnerait pas aussi bien sans tous ces accessoires ?
El Leñador macabro : Como Muertos, ce n’est pas que de la musique, c’est tout un univers
sur fond de films d’horreurs que nous voulons véhiculer. L’imagerie que nous apportons va
de paire avec notre musique, on peut ne pas aimer, trouver ça ridicule…pour ma part, quand
j’assiste à un concert d’Alice Cooper, je m’éclate, pas toi ?

S : D'où vient le visuel de votre pochette d'album, et quelle en est sa signification, si il y
en a une en particulier ? Avec qui avez-vous travaillé pour cette pochette ?
El Doctor : Tout le visuel de Como Muertos depuis ses débuts est réalisé par ma nana, et je
dois dire que c'est aussi grace à elle que nous arrivons à accrocher un peu les gens, car elle
réalise un travail de malade, et elle n'est bien sûr pas payée...... et en ce qui concerne la
signification, il n'y en a pas vraiment une en particulier, ce logo avec les machettes est
devenu depuis nos débuts notre logo, marque de fabrique, et ça te permet d'identifier
rapidement le groupe et de savoir dans quel univers tu vas tomber.

S : Le son de votre premier album Cronica Del Dolor est puissant mais très roots et
naturel. Comment avez-vous abordé la production de ce premier disque, et avec qui
avez-vous travaillé pour le mixage et le mastering ?
El Doctor : Presque tout l'album a été réalisé au Drudenhaus Studio avec Neb Xort aux
manettes ( Anorexia Nervosa, Ultra Vomit etc...). Nous avons d'abord enregistré la batterie
chez lui pendant 5 jours, nous sommes ensuite revenus chez nous pour faire les prises
guitares, voix, basses etc... et nous sommes ensuite retournés au Drudenhaus pour mixer et
masteriser tout ça. Et avec le recul, je pense que nous avons fait un très bon choix car le son
est comme tu le dis assez typé "oldschool" mais dans le bon sens du terme, à savoir que
l'ensemble reste très naturel et live tout en gardant un gros impact dés la première écoute.
S : Quels sont les thèmes principaux des paroles de vos chansons ? Y-a-t-il un fil
conducteur à travers tous les titres de ce premier album ?
Gorio : Les films d'horreur principalement, beaucoup de nos morceaux feraient un bon
scénario. Le fil conducteur: la perversion, le sadisme, que des trucs cool quoi.
S : De ce que j'ai vu sur le web, les critiques sont plutôt très bonnes concernant ce
premier album de Como Muertos ! Quels sont les retours que vous en avez eu pour
l'instant ? Et préparez-vous déjà un deuxième disque ?
El Leñador macabro : Dans l’ensemble, les retours sont très bons, mais ce qui est encore
plus motivant pour nous, c’est l’accueil que nous avons en concert, du coup, on commence à
rassembler nos idées, afin de préparer la suite.
S : Apparemment, Como Muertos n'est pas encore signé sur un label professionnel.
Quels sont vos plans pour l'avenir avec le groupe, et quels sont vos objectifs principaux
?

El Doctor : Nous allons essayer d'enchainer le maximum de dates pour promouvoir notre
premier album qui est encore assez récent puisqu'il n'est sorti qu'en juin dernier, et nous
allons doucement nous remettre à composer pour le deuxième album dans l'espoir de
décrocher un bon deal.
S : Que pensez-vous de la scène metal française actuelle ? Personnellement, je pense
que la tendance a beaucoup changé ces dernières années, puisqu'on est passés d'une
scène très nu-metal avec Pleymo, Watcha et autres... à une scène plus « extrême » avec
des groupes comme Dagoba, Lyzanxia. Où vous positionnez-vous dans tout ça ?
El Leñador macabro : Personnellement, vouloir situer Como Muertos parmi les autres
groupes ne m’intéresse pas plus que ça, alors tu imagines bien que si tu veux que je me
positionne, ça va te faire mal !, par contre, c’est un plaisir de croiser des musiciens qui sont
à fond dans leur style, le tout avec un bon esprit rock’n roll !
Gorio : Assez loin de tout ça quand même, on est plus dans un état d'esprit "old school" que
ces groupes. En fait on suit très peu ce qui se passe dans la scène métal française actuelle,
on est un peu resté bloqué dans les années 90, voir bien avant...

S : Vous faites vraisemblablement partie des groupes qui usent à l'excès des outils de
promotion modernes comme le web pour vous faire connaître, votre page MySpace par
exemple est assez bien travaillée et réussie. Que pensez-vous de ces outils, est-ce que
cela vous aide vraiment à garder le contact avec votre public ?
El Leñador macabro : Je suis plutôt surpris du terme «excès », on utilise simplement les
outils qui sont à notre disposition, et on essaie de le faire correctement. Nous sommes plutôt
sérieux dans ce que nous faisons voilà tout ! Quant à savoir si cela nous aide, c’est une
certitude, tant pour trouver des concerts que pour y faire venir du monde, toutes proportions
gardées bien sûr !
S : Quel est le groupe ou artiste avec qui vous rêvez de jouer un jour ? Et à l'averse
quel est le groupe avec qui vous ne voudriez absolument pas jouer, et pourquoi ?
El Leñador macabro : faire une tournée avec Coroner, je signe tout de suite ! Sans blaguer,
si tu parles de rêves, c’est plutôt des lieux que des groupes. Et pour le groupe avec qui je ne
voudrais pas jouer, je n’en ai pas !
S : Est-ce qu'un groupe comme Como Muertos voit parfois des choses étranges se
passer en live ? Quel est votre souvenir le plus bizarre depuis la création du groupe ?
Gorio : Pour l'instant pas vraiment de choses bizarres ou étranges, à part peut être à
l'Iguanorock Fest où j'ai voulu jouer avec une entorse du genou et je me suis retrouvé par

terre dès le premier riff du premier morceau et j'ai fini le concert sur une chaise.......
S : Question rituelle chez Rock'N'Balls : quel est votre Top 3 des meilleurs albums de
tous les temps, et pourquoi ?
El Leñador macabro : Master Of Puppets de Metallica ; c’est lui qui m’a donné envie de
jouer de la guitare. Sergent pepper’s… des Beatles ; ils font vraiment partie de mon
éducation musicale, au même titre que nombre de compositeurs classiques, qu’AC/DC,
Sweet Smoke ainsi que de nombreux jazzmen. Punishement For Decadence de Coroner (ce
n’est pas leur meilleur album, mais ce fut pour moi une révélation.) que dire de ce groupe…

Gorio : Deicide: Legion, Darkthrone: A Blaze In The Northerm Sky, Suffocation: Effigy Of
The Forgotten, parce que ça trou le cul!
El Doctor : C'est toujours un peu dur de répondre à ça mais pour taper dans 3 styles
différents, je dirais Metallica avec le Black album, une bonne partie des Pink Floyd, Devin
Towsend avec Ocean Machine, Pearl Jam, Entombed etc... (c'est nické pour le Top 3) Mais
il est clair que c'est Metallica avec le Black album qui m'a ouvert les oreilles, même si part
la suite, j'ai pu découvrir tellement de choses et tout aussi fort!!

El Leñador macabro : Très franchement, l’accueil chez vous est vraiment formidable, et vos
bières le sont encore plus ! C’est vraiment un plaisir de jouer dans votre pays et j’ai hâte de
pouvoir y faire une tournée.
El Doctor : Carrément d'accord, j'ai bien hate d'y retourner, et foncez en attendant vous

Como muertos... but not really!
Como Muertos is the kind of band that you see on a poster, and for
which you don't want to stay and listen if you don't like death, black,
or some other bloody slices of metal. But if you don't stay and listen to
these little sticky French guys, you could really miss something great!
You'll discover something very different if you take the time to see this
band live, and then on their album, 'cause you will need to know some
more after that!

Sponge (Rock'N'Balls) : Not a lot of people here know Como Muertos yet. How could
you introduce your band to the public? Where do you come from, and did your band
born?
El Doctor : This project is born in 2007 between me and the very first drummer D who only
plays on our first MCD. We did just want to enjoy playing together and mix two things wo
loved: extreme groovy music and the horror movies world. El Maestro then joined us during
the recording of this MCD, and when we finished making it, I told myself that was very
interesting and that there was something great to do with that. So we took the project more
seriously, we recruted people, and now we're there with our first full-length album that we're
very proud of! There's been for sure some changes since the recording of this record,
otherwise that would not be funny... Mike left and has been replaced by El Satanico, and a
El Leñador macabro came in permanently as the second guitar player.
S : The first time I've discover Como Muertos was at the Iguanorock Festival in
Belgium some weeks ago, and I must say that in the beginning, I was a little bit reticent
about the visual image of the band because I'm not a fan of the death culture... but
finally I've been kinda bluffed 'cause your music is quite rock'n'roll and not really
death metal! What are your main influences to play this kind of eclectic music?
El Leñador macabro : We all have a very wide musical knowledge, on a lot of different
styles, from classical music to extreme ones, but what unites us in this project is that
rock'n'roll spirit we have inside us and that we try to reproduce on stage.
S : Why did you choose to sing in Spanish and not in French or English?
El Leñador macabro : Because it's a guttural language that creates a very particular
atmosphere, and which really fits to the Como Muertos spirit, and like a coincidence
Spanish is El Maestro's mothertongue!
S : Even if it works fine live, Como Muertos has a little bit of a « kitschy » visual image
on stage, with fake bloody limbs, El Doctor's apron, etc... Do you think that this
imaging helps the band in a certain way, and that your music wouldn't work so well
without all these accessories?
El Leñador macabro : Como Muertos isn't just music, that's a whole universe with a horror
movies background that we want to convey. The imaging we bring goes well with our
music, you could not love it, or find it ridiculous... but for me, when I go to an Alice Cooper
show, I enjoy that! Don't you?
S : Where does your artwork's visual come from, and what's its meaning, if there's one
in particular? Who did you work with for this cover?
El Doctor : All the Como Muertos visuals from the beginning are realised by my girlfriend,
and thanks to her for giving us the possibility to interest people, 'cause she does a fucking
good work, and she's obviously not paid for that... and about the meaning, there's not a
particular one, this logo with the machetes became our official logo from the beginning, our

trademark, and it helps the fans to quickly identify the band and to know what they will
hear.

S : The sound of this first record, entitled Cronica Del Dolor, is very powerful but
really roots and naturel. How did you get into the production of this album, and who
did you work with for mixing and mastering phases?
El Doctor : Almost the whole album has been produced at Drudenhaus Studio with Neb
Xort at the table (Anorexia Nervosa, Ultra Vomit etc...). First we've recorded drums during
five days, then we came home to record guitars, bass and voices etc... then we went a
second time at Drudenhaus to mix and master all this shit. And with the passing of time, I
think we made a good choice 'cause the sound is, like you said, very « oldschool » but in the
right way, all our music stays very natural and live, keeping a big impact from the first
listening.
S : What are the mains themes of your songs lyrics? Is there a connecting thread
between all the tracks of this first record?
Gorio : Principally horror movies, a lot of our songs would make good screenplays. The
connecting thread: perversion, sadism, well some cool things.
S : From what I've seen on the web, critics are quite good about this first Como
Muertos record! What feedbacks did you get for the moment? And are you already
preparing a second album?
El Leñador macabro : Well, the feedbacks are really good, but what is really attractive for us
is the way people welcome us at the shows, so we are starting to collect our ideas to prepare
what's next.
S : Apparently, Como Muertos is not yet signed on a professional label. What are your
plans for the future of the band, and what are your main goals?
El Doctor : We will try to make a maximum of shows to promote our first record which is
still recent 'cause he just came out late june, and we will slowly start to write something else
for the second one, hoping to find a good deal.
S : What do you think about the actual French metal scene? Personnally, I think that
the trend changed a lot these last years, we went from very nu-metal scene with
Pleymo, Watcha, and some others... to a more « extreme » scene with some bands like
Dagoba or Lyzanxia. Where do you take your stand on that scene?

El Leñador macabro : To place Como Muertos among the other bands doesn't interest me, so
I can't take my personal stand no more there, it would hurt someone! But that's always a
pleasure to meet people and musicians who love their styles, all with a good rock'n'roll
spirit!
Gorio : We are very far from that, I think, we are more in an « oldschool » mood than these
bands. We don't really follow what's happening on the actual French metal scene, we kinda
stayed in the 90's, even before that...

S : You are very likely part of these bands who use to excess some modern promotional
tools like the Web, to make the band famous. You MySpace page, for example, is really
cool. What do you think about these tools, does that help you to keep contact with your
fans?
El Leñador macabro : I'm quite surprise you use the term « to excess », 'cause we simply use
the tools which are at our disposal, and we try to correctly do that. We are just rather serious
in what we do! And yes, it helps us, to find some shows, and to make people come at the
shows, makind due allowance, for sure!
S : What's the band or the artist you would dream to play with? And conversely, which
is the one you would never play play with?
El Leñador macabro : I would sign the deal right now to tour with Coroner! Seriously, if you
talk about dreams, that's rather about places than bands. And there's no band I would never
play with.
S : Does a band like Como Muertos sometimes see some strange things happen during
the live shows? What's your most weird memory since the creation of the band?
Gorio : Until now, there's never been something really weird or strange, or maybe at the
Iguanorock Festival, when I tried to play with a knee infringement and I felt to the ground
during the first riff of the first song. I've finished the show on a chair...
S : Traditional question on Rock'N'Balls : what's your Top 3 best albums ever, and
why?
El Leñador macabro : Metallica's Master Of Puppets; that's the one that made me want to
play guitar. The Beatles Sergent Pepper; they are part of my musical education, like some
classical songwriters, or AC/DC, Sweet Smoke and a lot of jazzmen. Coroner's Punishment
For Decadence; that's not their best record, but it's been a revelation to me, you must listen
to all their discography!

El Doctor : That's always difficult to answer to this question but if I had to make a choice, I
would say Metallica's Black Album, a lot of Pink Floyd, Devin Townsend's Ocean Machine,
Pearl Jam, Entombed, etc... (I just fucked your Top 3). But Metallica's Black Album is
clearly the record that opened my ears to metal music, even if after that, I've discovered a lot
of other kickin' great albums!
