INSPIRING INNOVATION I INNOVANTE PAR TRADITION INSPIRING INNOVATION I INNOVANTE PAR TRADITION François Gerin Jean-Jacques Dumont Président du Conseil d’administration Vice-PrEsident du Conseil Général des Mines Christian Coffinet Président de la Société des Anciens élèves Robert Germinet Claude Orphelin Directeur Président de la Fondation de l’école nationale supérieure de l’école nationale supérieure des mines de Saint-étienne des mines de Saint-étienne Georges Charpak has agreed to give his n ame to the Provence Center for Microelectronics. A tribute to Georges Charpak, Nobel Prize Laureate in Physics, 1992 EDUCATION and RESEARCH passionately drive the life and work of Georges Charpak and are both at the heart of the Scientific Inauguration Days which have been organized in his honour. He will be joined by five other Nobel Prize laureates, French and European members of the Academies of Science, industrial and institutional partners of the school, and high-ranking political officials who will speak during conferences, round-tables and debates. Georges Charpak graduated from the Ecole des mines in Paris and was a student of Frédéric Joliot-Curie at the Collège de France. He joined the CNRS in 1948 and the CERN in 1959, where he developed the multiwire proportional chamber, a particle detector for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1992 and which rapidly replaced bubble chambers, allowing a computer based treatment of data. journées scientifiques inaugurales du Have the pleasure Centre microélectronique de Provence Georges Charpak to invit you in the scientifiques inaugurales du Since 1996, with the support of the Academy of Sciences and his colleagues Pierre Lena and Yves Quéré, he has lead an important movement of renovation of the teaching of sciences in primary schools known as "La main à la pâte", which is now well-known throughout the world. Teaching has always been one of his major interests, and he has found with the ENSMSE a particularly motivated partner. He chairs the international jury of the puRkwa Prize, awarded jointly by the French Academy of Science and the Ecole nationale supérieure des mines of Saint-Etienne, and supported by local authorities of the city and the Loire department, as well as the Alumni of the school, the Groupe Casino and other industrial partners. The prize rewards pedagogical initiatives which help children acquire a scientific spirit. “ journées i n v i tat i o n Centre microélectronique de Provence Georges Charpak ” January 29th and 30th, 2008 SCIENCE under all aspects will be central to the inauguration days : as applied to education, as a force for citizens integration, as applied to research, as the driving force of economic and social progress. Between these two worlds, from school children to the highest scientific distinctions, lies one common denominator : THE SCIENTIFIC SPIRIT. To promote the scientific spirit among younger people throughout the world is Georges Charpak's constant objective and is also one of the missions the Academy of Science and the Ecole nationale supérieure des mines of Saint-Etienne are committed to fulfil through the puRkwa Prize.
