In 1972 Robert Mondavi was brought on board as a consultant for the emerging winery, helping to lay out the foundations for what would become one of the best wineries of the Margaret River. The Art Series Chardonnay is frequently regarded as the best Chardonnay of Australia, with the 1980 vintage being declared as the “Best Chardonnay in the world” by Decanter Magazine in 1982. 13 Chenin Blanc One of the noblest white grapes of France, Chenin Blanc is widely underrated and misunderstood. Birthed from the obscure Jura grape Savagnin, and a close relative to Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc can make an extremely versatile wine that comes in a variety of styles. In its famous home of Vouvray, Chenin can range from dry to lusciously sweet, with a distinctive aroma of beeswax and hints of the Noble Rot, Botrytis. The wines of Savennieres are known for their incredible austerity and complexity, while the area of Chinon has some of the rarest plantings of Chenin that take on a delicious fruity profile similar to orchard fruits. Lastly, Chenin Blanc is also the most famous white grape of South Africa. Once known as “Steen,” Chenin in South Africa has plantings far exceeding anywhere else in the world, and also has some of the world’s oldest Chenin vines, which Eben Sadie’s Skurfburg plays testament to. Lost in time and almost translation, a unique language made up of French and German is spoken by its small population. The grapes of the Grand Crus of Alsace are only allowed Grand Cru status if they are planted to the four noble grapes of Alsace: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat, and Gewurztraminer, with the only exception in history being the powerful Sylvaner growing in Zotzenberg. However, it wasn’t until 1946 when descendant Albert Boxler, then living in the state of Montana, returned home to his family domain during World War II to help save his family’s domain. Upon returning home he united the family brand for the first time bottled at the winery and under its own family label, the same label used today drawn by Albert’s cousin in 1946. The Sultan apparently loved the “mineral water” exclaiming; “if the French mineral waters are so good, why do they bother to make wine?” Other Delicious Mineral Waters Cape Point Vineyards, Reserve White, Cape Point, South Africa 2011 Reyneke, Reserve White, Stellenbosch, South Africa 2012 The Ned, Waihopai River, Marlborough, New Zealand 2014 Tim Adams, Clare Valley, Australia 2012 (Semillon) 18 100 115 45 70 Viognier, Marsanne, Roussane & Grenache Blanc France Andre et Michel Quenard, Les Terrasses, Chignin-Bergeron, Savoie 2012 Jean-Michel Gerin, Le Loye, Condrieu, Rhone 2008 Domaine Georges Vernay, Les Chaillees de L’enfer, Condrieu, Rhone 2009* Vieux Telegraphe, La Crau, Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Rhone 2011 Vins de Vienne, Les Laurelles, Cotes du Rhone Blanc, Rhone 2011 75 135 230 150 60 *Les Chaillees de L’enfer Literal translation: The Terraces of Hell. Although Australia’s winemaking history is one of the World’s youngest, Australia boasts some of the oldest living vines in the world, due largely to their outstanding control and preventative measures of the aphid louse Phyloxera, a notorious pest that feeds on the rootstock of the Vitis Vinifera species of grapes. Many of the old vines came in danger in 1987 when the Australian government began paying growers to pull up red vines in an attempt to meet the rampant international demand for Chardonnay in the 1980’s and to take care of an inflated surplus of red grape plantings. Ultimately this plan backfired as demand for Australian Chardonnay subsided 20 years later, leaving growers with too much Chardonnay and not enough of the increasingly popular old vine Shiraz, Grenache, and Mataro (Mourvedre) that had been pulled up. Thankfully, many growers with admirable integrity maintained their old vines, gracing Australia with a unique treasure trove of old vines with incredible complexity, such as the over 160 year old Mourvedre from Hewitson’s Old Garden. d’Arenberg, Shiraz, Dead Arm, McLaren Vale 2010 Clarendon Hills, Grenache, Kangarilla, Clarendon, McLaren Vale 2008 Clarendon Hills, Shiraz, Astralis, McLaren Vale 2006 Henschke, Shiraz, Mount Edelstone, Eden Valley 2012 Hewitson, Mourvedre, Old Garden, Barossa 2010 Hewitson, Shiraz, The Mother Vine, Barossa 2012 Hewitson, Shiraz, The Mad Hatter, McLaren Vale 2012 Leeuwin, Shiraz, Art Series, Margaret River 2011 Torbreck, Mataro, The Pict, Barossa 2010 Torbreck, Grenache/Shiraz/Mataro, The Steading, Barosa 2010 27 135 120 545 255 195 110 110 80 185 95 California Grenache, Syrah, & Rhone Varietals Anglim, Syrah, Central Coast 2009 Antiqv2s, Syrah, Pisoni Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands 2008 Big Basin Vineyards, Syrah, Coastview Vineyard, Monterey County 2010 Big Basin Vineyards, Frenchie’s Ranch, Santa Cruz Mountains 2009 Big Basin Vineyards, Syrah, Old Corral, Santa Cruz Mountains 2009 Big Basin Vineyards, Syrah, Rattlesnake Rock, Santa Cruz Mountains 2010 Cline, Ancient Vine Mourvedre, Contra Costa County 2012 Copain, Syrah, Hawks Butte, Yorkville Highlands, Mendocino 2006 Coterie Cellars, Syrah, Casatierra Vineyard, Fiddletown, Amador County 2009 The Farm Winery, Grenache/Syrah, Touchy-Feely, Paso Robles 2010 Halcon, Syrah, Alturas, Yorkville Highlands, Mendocino 2011 Sanguis, Syrah, Misfit, Central Coast 2011 60 75 100 200 110 110 55 95 75 85 70 110 Other Interesting Syrahs Kingston Family Vineyards, Syrah, Bayo Oscuro, Casablanca Valley, Chile 2009 Hedges, Syrah, Goedhart Family, Bel Villa Vineyard, Red Mountain, Washington 2011 Shafer, Relentless, Syrah/Petit Syrah, Napa Valley 2011 28 75 70 195 Northern Italian Reds, Tuscany & Veneto Brunello di Montalcino Camigliano 2009 Sesti 2007 95 180 Chianti Felsina, Rancia, Chianti Classico Riserva 2009 120 Super Tuscans and Bolgheri Gaja, Ca’marcanda, Promis, Toscana 2011 Fattoria Viticcio I Greppi, Greppicaia, Bolgheri 2007 Isole E Olena, Cepparello, Toscana 2011 Oreno, Tenuta Sette Ponti, Toscana 2004 105 110 165 200 Veneto Tedeschi, Amarone della Valpolicella 2008 135 29 Northern Italian Reds, Piedmont Barbera d’Alba Fratelli Cigliuli, Vigna Serraboella 2012 65 Langhe Fratelli Cigliuli, Briccoserra 2012 Damilano, Marghe 2012 100 60 Barbaresco Fratelli Cigliuli, Serraboella 2010 Silvio Giamello, Vicenziana 2009 140 90 Barolo Renatto Ratti, Marcenasco 2007 Vietti, Castiglione 2009 Vietti, Castiglione 2010 130 120 120 Gattinara Luigi Nervi 2002 Travaglini, Riserva 2007 70 115 30 Red Burgundy Cote de Nuits Anne Gros, La Combe d’Orveau 1er, Chambole Musigny 2011 Dujac, Morey Saint Denis 2012 Faiveley, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2009 Faiveley, Craipillot 1er, Gevrey-Chambertin 2011 Faiveley, Echezeaux Grand Cru 2011 Domaine de l’Arlot, Clos des Forets Saint Georges 1er, Nuits Saint Georges 2006 Domaine de l’Arlot, Clos des Forets Saint Georges 1er, Nuits Saint Georges 2011 Domaine de l’Arlot, Clos des Forets Saint Georges 1er, Nuits Saint Georges 2012 Lupe Cholet, Les Rouges du Dessus 1er, Vosne Romanee 2009 Michel Gros, Hautes Cotes de Nuits Rouge 2010 Perrot-Minot, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2009 Perrot-Minot, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2008 Cote de Beaune Joseph Voillot, Vieilles Vignes, Volnay 2012 Domaine Louis Latour, Chateau Corton Grancey Grand Cru 2009 Domaine Louis Latour, Chateau Corton Grancey Grand Cru 2010 Domaine Louis Latour, Chateau Corton Grancey Grand Cru 2011 Maison Roche De Bellene, Les Charmots 1er, Pommard 2010 Monthelie Douhairet Porcheret, Clos du Meix Garnier, Monthelie 2011 Other Interesting Red Burgundy Domaine Robert Chevillon, (Gamay/Pinot Noir) Bourgogne Passetoutgrain 2010 Danjean-Berthoux, La Plante 1er, Givry 2012 31 210 185 420 145 400 225 185 225 240 75 650 500 135 260 265 250 165 85 70 65 Pinot Noir, Domestic Mendocino Barnett Vineyards, Savoy Vineyard, Anderson Valley 2009 120 Napa Valley Patz & Hall, Hyde Vineyard, Carneros 2012 150 Sonoma Flowers, Sea View Ridge, Sonoma Coast 2011 Littorai, Sonoma Coast 2013 Patz & Hall, Sonoma Coast 2012 Patz & Hall, Gap’s Crown, Sonoma Coast 2012 Petite Abeille, Russian River Valley 2009 Porter Creek, Fiona Hill Vineyard, Russian River 2012 Reuling, Reuling Vineyard, Sonoma Coast 2011 Sandler Wine Co., Keefer Ranch, Russian River Valley 2010 160 115 85 150 85 100 135 90 Other Pinot Noirs Of The North Central Coast Big Basin Vineyards, Cuvee TJ, Coast Grade Vineyard, Santa Cruz Mountains 2013 Big Basin Vineyards, Woodruff Family Vineyard, Santa Cruz Mountains 2010 Clos de La Tech, Domaine Valeta, Santa Cruz Mountains 2006 Portola Vineyards, Los Trancos Vineyard, Santa Clara Valley 2010 Rhys, San Mateo County 2012 Skywalker Vineyards, Marin County 2011 95 120 180 85 120 145 32 Pinot Noir, Domestic Cont.
