The authors describe an innovative process to restore both mechanical structure and near resistance of existing damaged pipes. The process also improves significantly the hydraulic properties of the repaired pipe. Three applications of the process are described, in Le Pecq near Paris, in Limoges and one in Sidney which was awarded the 2010 NO DIG prize in TORONTO. 1 - Projet- 1 - Project- La buse ARMCO Ø 3000 et 3250 mm qui constitue le collecteur pluvial part d’une chambre située entre le « drive Principaux intervenants Maîtres d’Ouvrage, Maître d’œuvre, Exploitant, Entreprises : • Syndicat Intercommunal d’Assainissement de la Région de Saint Germain en Laye (SIARSGL) regroupant les 9 communes de Saint Germain en Laye, Marly le Roi, Mareil-Marly, l’Etang la Ville, Fourqueux, Port Marly, Chambourcy (versant sud), Le Pecq (rive gauche) et Louveciennes (le Bas Prunay) • Bureau d’études : SAFEGE Poissy • Exploitant : Lyonnaise des Eaux du Pecq • Entreprises : HP-BTP (mandataire), KMG-LinerTec (sous-traitant) • Fournisseur : Sté Rib Loc 1.1 - Features of the existing structure The ARMCO Ø 3000 and 3250mm duct that makes up the rainwater drain starts from a chamber located between the Quick restaurant "drive in" and the builders' merchant Point P, avenue de Gaulle in Pecq. Le vide annulaire et les vides autour de la buse ARMCO sont comblés par du coulis ciment. roadway of the Pyramides private service lane known as the "avenue Saint Germain" finally under the Pyramides private car park (sports and spa complex) before flowing into the Seine. The duct is linear, under 1.5 to 2m cover, above water table, and its gradient is 0.95%. 13 connections with Ø 150 to 1000mm pour into the drain. 1.2 - Type of effluent The effluent carried is mainly rainwater. 1.3 - Problem issues This refers to smoothing the ARMCO duct to improve operation and prevent any risk of flooding upstream. The spiral piping's smooth surface can improve the structure's hydraulic capacities by 78%. The structuring spiral piping can also restore the mechanical structure and its wear resistance in addition to guaranteeing the drain's sealing for a life span of at least 50 years. 1.6 - The “Ribline” solution The solution proposed as a variation by HPBTP and chosen by the Saint Germain-en-Laye Regional District Sewer Syndicate consists of casing the existing drain by building a new structuring and sealed pipe with annular space made of reinforced steel PE profile, coiled in a spiral and welded on itself (Rib Loc Ribline process) The annular space and the spaces around the ARMCO pipe are packed with cement grout. The new duct will be made of reinforced steel PE profile, 40mm thick, annealed on the outside and smooth on the inside. The new duct is structuring. It replaces the former structure and withstands all mechanical demands for a minimum life span of 50 years. Duct sealing is restored; the hydraulic flow is considerably improved by the polyethylene's smooth surface. Note: due to its 2750mm diameter and its 237 and 44m shaft lines, this Pyramides worksite should set a new piping record following the Sydney job (see § 3.2). 1.5 - Worksite constraints • Avoid reducing the structure cross section too much. • 2 changes of diameter. • 13 connection openings. • Effluent management (effluent bypass on the surface is impossible due to the D 186 road, works to be carried out in dry weather for safety reasons; over-loading during major storms, etc.). • Access to the chamber upstream from the surface is limited due to the Quick and Point P businesses • Works on the site of the Pyramides luxury leisure complex. • Employee (Seine downstream) and resident (Pyramides customers) safety. 1.7 - Advantages of Ribline piping The advantages of Ribline piping are: • Drain does not block thereby flow continuity is guaranteed. • No need for manpower on the pipe (except for possible preliminary work, checking the effluent level and the ballasting and provisional shoring of the piping before filling the annular space). • Less worksite area (shaft not as long, smaller storage surface) • Technique managing to avoid work from upstream. • And therefore less impact on the Pyramides complex. The annular space is filled with cement grouting. 3.1.3 - Objectifs • Redonner son étanchéité et sa résistance mécanique à l’ouvrage • Consolider le sol environnant Coiling the PE profile Using the coiling machine placed in the insertion shaft, the profile is coiled to a diameter that is slightly less than the diameter of the damaged piping. Should the length of profile on a drum be insufficient for the length of piping to be rehabilitated, a new drum will be brought to the worksite and the two profile lengths will be welded end to end. The new channelling is made up of a continuous strip of reinforced steel PE profile, coiled into a spiral and welded on itself inside the damaged channelling thereby forming a new and exceptionally strong drain. The PE profile is made up of a U-shaped outer surface, a smooth inner surface and edges that can link in successive spirals (Fig. 2). Note: the light weight of the Ribline pipe means that it can be laid in a single 633ml Ø 2400mm insertion then 706 ml in 2009 close to Sydney (record awarded the world no dig prize 2010). (cf § 3.2). 3.1 - Rehabilitation of accessible drain: St André Bridge worksite in Limoges 3.1.1 - General data • 202m Ø 2.5m ARMCO type rainwater • Work May-August 2009 by HPBTP 3.1.2 - Context and constraints A one-off collapse upstream demonstrated exfiltrations due to numerous foundation perforations (due to rust) destabilising the subbase of the metal pipe. There are many significant constraints: • Under the slipway for the A20 Motorway access and under roads over banks • Impossible to redirect the effluent on the surface • No access to the structure (except for the outlet in Vienne) • 4 x 20-41º bends • Minimise work on the drain (collapse risks) • No waste should pollute the Vienne 3.1.3 - Goals • Restore sealing and mechanical resistance to the structure • Consolidate the ground around it 3.1.4 - Ribline piping Following a call for tenders (½ hull in foundation and vaulted projection) open to alternatives, the Agglomeration Community solution was chosen consisting of casing the existing drain by building a new pipe in situ made of reinforced steel PE profile, coiled in a spiral and heat-welded on to itself (Ribline process). The annular space and the spaces around the pipe will be packed with cement grout. 3.1.5 - Advantages of the "Ribline" solution • No digging and drain not blocked • Lightweight (PE) and very rigid (steel ribs) • Progress by rotation and flotation, no workforce intervention 3.1.6 - Participants • Limoges Metropolis Agglomeration Community (Project Owner) • Collective Sewer and Natural Spaces Division (Project manager) • M3R (intermediary company) • HPBTP (joint contractor) • Rib Loc (Profiles, Ribline machine, technical assistance) 357_362Rehabilitation_Mise en page 1 23/08/12 11:28 Page361 CHANTIERS/WORKSITES • Direction de L’Assainissement Collectif et des Espaces Naturels (Maitre d’œuvre) • M3R (entreprise mandataire) • HPBTP (co traitant) • Rib Loc (Profilés, machine Ribline, assistance technique) 3.1.7 - Example of a Rib Loc Ribline piping worksite Rehabilitation of 202m 2500mm rainwater piping on St André Bridge in Limoges Coude 3.1.7 - Exemple chantier de tubage « Ribline », procédé de la société Rib Loc Réhabilitation 202 m pluvial 2500 mm Pont saint André à Limoges. 7 + 19 + 22 m Ø 1540 / 1600 mm 51 + 102 m Ø 2000 / 2080 mm Photo 5 - Tubage 2000 / 2080 mm depuis la Vienne / 2000 / 2080 mm piping from the Vienne river.
