Panel conveners: John Eade, Universities of Roehampton and Toron, Mario Katić, University of Zadar - The anthropology of pilgrimage has emerged as a well recognized sub-field of Anthropology with a significant body of literature that has addressed a wide range of pilgrimage phenomena. Recent research and publications have sought to move beyond debates concerning communitas and contestation (see Turner and Turner 1978; Eade and Sallnow 1991; Morinis 1992) towards explorations of movement, gender, ethnicity,visualisation, secular and spiritual pilgrimage, political and economic processes, and the relationship between pilgrimage and tourism (Walter and Reader 1992; Coleman and Eade 2004; Badone and Roseman 2004; Hopgood 2005; Margry 2008; Albera and Couroucli 2012; Bowman 2012; Jansen and Notermans 2012; Reader 2013; Fedele 2103; Eade and Katić 2014; etc). - Nevertheless, some important gaps remain and one of them is military pilgrimage. Although pilgrimage places have always been connected to nationalism, politics and military from the Middle Ages (Crusaders) to contemporary practices (like Australian pilgrimage to Gallipoli or Western to memorials from the First and Second World War), focus on this form of pilgrimage has been neglected in pilgrimage research. At Lourdes, one of Europe’s most visited Christian shrines – military pilgrimage has been a long established feature and with the collapse of the Iron Curtain and the advance of globalisation the international military pilgrimage to Lourdes has grown significantly with delegations from Poland, Slovakia, Croatia, Ukraine, Canada and the USA as well as from W. Europe. Military pilgrimages are also happening in these European and N. American countries, viz. the Polish military pilgrimages to Jasna Gora and Lichen, Croatian military pilgrimage to Marija Bistrica, etc. - Through this panel we want to contribute to research on this still neglected form of pilgrimage. Our goal is to gather scholars and case studies from around the world in trying to access practices and discourses connected to Christian and non-Christian military pilgrimage in local and global contexts at national and trans-national levels. We want to observe military pilgrimage in synchronic and diachronic perspective and in relationship to politics and nationalism, as well as to individual pilgrims and/or different (secular and religious) agents connected with the establishment and organisation of different military pilgrimages. - Abstracts (up to 300-words in Word doc.), with contact details and affiliation, should be sent to John Eade ([email protected]) and Mario Katić ([email protected]) by September 7th 2014. Actualités juridiques / Legal news Two important legal developments regarding questions related directly or indirectly with religious affairs in Greece have taken place from November 2013 until April 2014: - The decision of the European Court of Human Right (ECHR) condemning Greece for discriminatory treatment, because Law no. 3719/2008 that introduced an official form of partnership for unmarried couples called a “civil union”, excluded same-sex couples from the scope of the bill. The ECHR found that the Law violated article 14 taken in conjunction with article 8 of the Convention, according to which the different treatment of individuals or groups on the basis of their sexual orientation is unacceptable. Moreover, the ECHR called for enacting a new legislation introducing a new system of registered partnership for same-sex couples (For details see). The Greek Government, however, has not yet complied with the Court’s decision, refraining from adapting its legislation to the European norms. The major reason for this is probably the unanimous opposition of the Orthodox Church of Greece to its application. - The Church has not yet reacted ‘institutionally’ against the ECHR decision, but only through unofficial individual statements of prelates. Within the current volatile social context, an effect of which has been the increase of the Church’s political leverage as an ‘interest group’, the threat of the Bishop of Piraeus to ‘excommunicate’ the MPs, who would vote in favour of the relevant amendment, is characteristic. The Ruling no. 2980/2013 of the Supreme Administrative Court of Greece (the so-called Council of State) rejecting the claim for the removal of Christian symbols (icons) from the courtrooms on the basis of ECHR decision for the Lautsi case. Actualité juridique / Legal news Registration of Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster On 15 March 2013, the Minister of Administration and Digitization refused to register the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Justifying his decision, the Minister emphasized that the Register may only contain religious communities, and in fact, Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster “is kind of anti-religion.” Church officials announced an appeal against the decision , as well as a complaint to the Administrative Court in Warsaw. On 8 April 2014 the Administrative Court in Warsaw found a violation of the act of 17 May 1989 on the guarantees of freedom of conscience and religion. In the consequence of that judgment, decision of refusal to register was cancelled and now Minister of Administration and Digitisation is obligated to register this church according to provisions of Act of 17 May 1989 without any illegal restrictions. Sondages / Surveys The Church Growth Research Programme is an 18 month research programme into the causes and conditions for Church growth commissioned by the Church of England. The programme is now completed and the full reports for each strand of the research are available here. Data on local and national characteristics on ethnicity, identity, language, and religion in Scotland from the 2011 Census in Scotland were released on 27 February 2014. More information, and links to the data can be found here. Data from the British Social Attitudes (BSA) Survey for 2012 has now been made available for wider usage via the UK Data Service. Early results were released by NatCen on 10 September 2013, and can be found here. Socrel 2014: ‘Religion and Crisis’: 2-4 July 2014 at the University of Sussex The 2014 British Sociological Association’s Sociology of Religion Study group’s annual conference will be held at the University of Sussex 2-4 July. The theme for this year is ‘Religion and Crisis’. Registration is now open. Link. ASREC 1st European Conference 2014: 5 – 6 September 2014 at St John’s College, University of Durham. The Association for the Study of Religion, Economics, and Culture is holding its 1st European Conference. Proposals for Single papers are due 9 May and proposals for whole sessions are due 16 May. Actualités juridiques / Legal news Le projet de loi modifiant la loi «Sur la liberté de conscience et les associations religieuses» a été déposé à la Douma d’Etat par le gouvernement russe fin mars 2014. Par un arrêt du 10 mars 2010 (Kimlya et autres c. Russie), la Cour européenne des droits de l’homme avait jugé que l’article 9 de cette loi, qui empêche tout groupe religieux n’existant pas depuis au moins quinze ans sur le territoire d’acquérir la personnalité morale, était contraire aux dispositions de la Convention. Le projet de loi propose d’abroger cette disposition. Mais il apporte également des restrictions à la capacité juridique des nouvelles organisations religieuses autonomes (non liées avec une Eglise ou organisation religieuse centrale) pour une période de 10 ans après leur enregistrement comme personne morale.
