Culture, le magazine culturel en ligne de l'Université de Liège Marc Atkins, From Logic of the Stairwell The Damned Les damnés The days began spreading like wildfire. The train burns into the night. Floating amongst the dark the orange stations are unattainable escape routes holding still as I turn and catch them scream past. Le train brûle dans la nuit. Flottant dans l'obscurité les oranges sont d'inaccessibles voies de secours qui se immobiles alors que je tourne et attrape le cri au pass Five weeks hiding in the rooms I never found. It was vacant but for the thin mattress and the piles of photographs letters and notebooks lying in unstacked piles on the floor. The humming silence which muffled the air. The ripped wallpaper and worn carpets stained. Three floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a two-lane highroad. The continual noise of the traffic which sustained me through lonely hours. Confused by mental nausea and the uncertainty of the photograph I lay and made stories from the patterns on the ceiling. Between times I searched the windows on the opposite side of the wide street following the patterns of lives beyond each of the glass borderlines. Nights of violent orange blue and green leapt out and clung to the dark. In the daylight the hollow rooms were still shadows. Dull matted shrouds twitched in a broken breeze. Shades buried themselves deep within the futile space. Uncommonly a face appeared. A mist of breath on the glass. Staring at the cold. Looking. Like mine. Res Au mien. They lay amongst the razed buildings and rough grass. Stars glinted through the glowing air that carried above the city. The animate lights of the motorway nearby reflected sharply in the sisters' eyes. The camera beside them lay burdened. Through the dark a boy walks in the damp air. From the glare of the carriageway lamps he discerned the figures lying on a mould of debris. At the sound of stumbling footsteps the three sat upright and strained stares into the darkness. There was the noise of the traffic and there was silence. The youngest sister picked up the camera and pointed it in the direction of the perturbation. Pressing the shutter the flash fired. All three saw in the instant of light the naked boy frozen against the purple night sky. The following moment passed in the dark. Scrambling hands and feet scraping over rubble faintly cut through the sound of the tearing traffic. Enveloping her taught flesh and paralysing flavour I did not know I was screaming. There in that place. Not going where I wanted to go. N'allant pas où je vo You are where I cannot find you. Tu es là où je ne peux te trouver. Do not go. Ne pars pas. We stand within the threshold of rooms. Haunted. Hantés. She sat in the shadow of the back room watching through the door the men walk the far room. Pacing the floor the heavy sunlight through the blinds rendered each a silhouette. I saw the two photographs a year ago. Set upright on a mantelpiece leaning against an enamelled cigarette box alongside several others. The first a blurred image of a young woman bleached hair standing with a camera over her shoulder the backdrop a city at dusk. The second a man's face half shadowed so close you could see the pores of his skin and the dimples on the red stained linoleum behind his head. The wound across his cheek and the flow of blood from it down onto the floor was inexorable. The door gave with a gentle crack. I pushed it open and walked into the dim room. A few steps which disturbed the flawless dust made my eyes water. I saw the two coats hanging on brass pegs screwed to the back of the bedroom door. I found the small photograph in the lower inside left pocket of the dark grey coat. Not where she said it would be. I crawled over to the stiff upright chair snatching at shallow breaths. Pulling myself up I sat back into it. The image of a woman I once saw through a railway carriage window brushing her black hair fired through my head. Sitting on the bed I caught her reflection glance across the hallway mirror. Assis sur le lit j'ai vu son reflet effleurer le miroir du ha That was the last time I saw M. As the years have passed that final brief image has stayed vivid in my mind as all other memories of her have bleached out. © Université de Liège - http://culture.ulg.ac.be/ - 15/02/2017 -2- Culture, le magazine culturel en ligne de l'Université de Liège He stood on the empty street looking up at the windows. To his left the sun was setting behind a vast ironwork of new skyscrapers. To his right an encroaching purple sky was pushing cool air before it. He ran his eyes along the tower of windows facing him. There was the fourth floor and there the third window from the right. An unhealthy shadow passed out through the glass. He took paper and pen from his pocket and made a brief observation. Returning the pen and paper to his pocket he turned and walked west. Even on the brightest of days the light under the Viaduct is dim. The drizzle of that winters day rendered my standing place deep under it almost a warm cave. So I waited. The light changed. The temperament of the street shifted. The dust began to fall. Memories of the empty room echo through my head. I taste the lemon on my breath as the chill begins to lift. The sun's morning rays spill over the roofs on the other side of the river. I haven't eaten for days. Where is she. Thoughts of her were intermittent. Focus . I suspect she will bring the letter. Journeying troubles the mind. The place where I am and the place where I will be is arid land. I idly shuffling though the note books and photographs which were pored across the floor. The earliest I marked dated back some twenty years. Later I found that each was a suicide note.
