Rhône Valley
Southern Rhône
While it is often blended with Syrah, Mouvedre and Carignan amongst others, it is Grenache that provides
the backbone to the wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Vacqueyras and Côtes du Rhone. Lighter in style to
Syrah, it nonetheless packs a vinous, peppery punch.

Northern Rhône
The home of Syrah, where it is the sole red variety in the the great reds of Hermitage and Cote Rotie, and
where, in the hands of winemakers like Stephane Ogier, is producing wines of great elegance and finesse.
Classic Northern Rhone syrah combines crisp, dark berry fruit with a savoury, meaty character.

southern Rhone, and the wines are packed with character, warmth and spice.

While Cahors is principally Malbec, or Cot as it is locally known, and Madiran primarily Tannat, both wines
display similar characteristics. Dense, tannic and complex, they soften beautifully with age.

Beaujolais
For those of you quick to dismiss Beaujolais, now may be the time to think again. Gone are the jammy and
confected wines of the past. Modern purveyors of the Gamay grape are producing wines with a fresh
fruitiness and good tannic structure.

Burgundy
The very name inspires lust and longing in wine lovers the world over, and there is no debating that this is
the region in which Pinot Noir truly excels. The only question then is which village to choose... Do you go for
the power and structure of a Gevrey Chambertin or Nuits St. George, or the silky texture and perfume of
Volnay, Chambolle or Vosne Romanee. Either way, Burgundy is unrivalled as a treasure trove of flavour,
texture and scent.

St Emilion
St. Emilion itself is largest and most important of the right bank regions, the wines are classified as St.
Émilion, St. Émilion Grand Cru and St. Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé. The surrounding area includes the
satellites of Cotes de Franc, Cotes de Bourg, Canon-Fronsac and Puisseguin St. Emilion. All of these
appellations are Merlot and Cabernet Franc dominated, and the wines possess structure, longevity and rich,
supple fruit.

Pomerol
Despite having no official classification, the best wines from this tiny appellation, such as Ch. Petrus or Le
Pin, often command the highest prices in all of Bordeaux. The wines are mostly Merlot based, lush and
opulent in style and ready to drink after five years but capable of aging for many more

Veneto and Northern Italy
The hills to the east of Lake Garda are home to Valpolicella, which, due to the influence of wineries such as
Allegrini and Degani, is enjoying a serious increase in quality and popularity. Valpolicella is full of fresh

Italy, from Vino Nobile to the rapidly rising region of Morellino di Scansano. With cherry fruit and a
characteristic bitter twist, Sangiovese makes for wonderfully distinctive drinking. The two IGT's- Cepparello

The rules and regulations regarding what was allowed in Tuscany were absolute, and those that broke
them were simply labelled Vino di Tavola. Blending Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or even
Syrah may not have been permitted under Italian law, the resulting wines could not be ignored and are now
have their own classifcation in IGT.

Piedmont
Perhaps the most esteemed of all the native Italian varietals, Nebbiolo is the sole grape in Barolo, the most
aristocratic of red wines. These wines need time to fulfill their potential and express their most complex
aromas and flavours. Barbera, another grape native to this part of northern Italy is for the most part a
simpler affair, producing wines with cherry, bramble fruit and refreshing acidity.

New Zealand
Pinot Noir remains by far the most important red variety in New Zealand, with the differences between the
regions becoming more apparent. Central Otago is now producing some of the best Pinots outside of
France. But keep an eye on the cool climate Syrahs and Cabernets- plantings are relatively small but results
have been very successful- these could be the future of New Zealand reds.

Australians. Shiraz is now spoken of in terms of its provenance, be it Victoria, Barossa or even Canberra.
And it's not just Shiraz. The Cabernets of Coonawarra and Margaret River are miles apart in more ways than
one. With Pinot Noir thriving in the cooler climates of Victoria and Tasmania and Grenache in McLaren Vale,
there has never been a better time to explore the contrasts and distinctions of regional Australia.

Italy
Italy is finally shaking off the legacy of poor quality whites left behind from years of Frascati and Orvieto.
Leading the pack are wineries such as Pieropan and Broglia la Meirana, meticulous winemakers who imbue
their wines with real character and personality, traits that were long missing from the whites of Italy.

Spain
The white wines of Spain are undergoing something of a renaissance, mostly due to intelligent site
selections. Many white grapes are being planted at altitude- some up to 1000m- which results in cooler
year round temperatures and a freshness not previously found in many Spanish wines.

Much like the country itself, the wines of South Africa seem like a meeting to two worlds, combining the
elegance and purity of the old, with the intensity and fruit character of the new.

Australia
As with the reds, regionality have become a major focus for Australian white wines. The cooler parts of
South Australia- Clare and Eden valleys- are the primary source of quality Riesling, Chardonnays from
Adelaide Hills and Victoria are increasingly restrained yet complex. Margaret River, south of Perth on the
west coast, continues to produce world class whites from both Chardonnay and Sauvignon.

New Zealand
Not so long ago the white wine output from New Zealand consisted entirely of Sauvignon Blanc of almost
Varietal plantings and locations diversified, resulting in elegant yet complex Chardonnays, vibrant Rieslings
and remarkably fresh Pinot Gris. Even the original Marlborough Sauvignon has evolved- take a look at Kevin
