MEMORIES OF ILV IN MARSEILLE 2003 During the last years, Institute for Living Voice has been invited by many organizations. In 2003, ILV was organized for the first time in, and together with, GRIM/Montévidéo in Marseille. The warm character of the building and our collaborators, the cozy bar and the sunny terrace created the perfect circumstances for the creative work in the concert-halls and rehearsal studios. Here we had morning warm-up Alexander-technique classes, exciting concerts, great meals together and wonderful informal discussions before and after our workshops. This excellent venue created a unique atmosphere. More than enough reasons to come back to Marseille and this hospitable and very inspiring arts center. W OU T E R V AN L OOY AND D A VID MOSS / SP RIN G 2006 GRIM / MONTEVIDEO GRIM creates, informs and educates in the field of improvisation and new music. In Montevideo, it presents local, national and international musicians for concerts, recordings, residencies and workshops. These programs are intended for the most divers audience possible. GRIM stimulates friction and comparison between electronic music, early or contemporary music, rock, hoping to lead an unwritten music towards continued creativity. Montévidéo – a home for new works, is dedicated to improvisatory music and contemporary writing. As a centre for creation and research it wants to break the barriers between different forms of artistic expression. In Montévidéo, the Centre de Ressources is a place for study and consultation. With its often updated documentary archive (records, magazines and literary publications), Montevideo develops a program for a broad public, students, university graduates and professionals (listening workshops, writing workshops, conferences,). Montévidéo is directed by its two founders, Hubert Colas (author and director) and Jean- Marc Montera (musician). M U Z I E K T H E AT E R T R A N S PA R A N T Muziektheater Transparant is a production company that shifts the boundaries between opera and musical theatre. The voice is placed firmly at the centre of our projects, and we continually blend the old and the new – Mozart and Maxwell Davies, Monteverdi and Udo Zimmermann, Richard Strauss and Wim Henderickx. Muziektheater Transparant offers contemporary musicians the chance to develop and present new work. During the next years, Transparant will focus on three composers in residence: Jan Van Outryve, Wim Henderickx and Eric Sleichim. A more theatrical approach is added with directors Wouter Van Looy, Caroline Petrick and Ramsey Nasr. We regularly collaborate with other producers and we are currently developing a laboratory where young artists can explore new work and challenge the genres. Unique in this regard, is our Institute for Living Voice project. And each year, Transparant gives young singers the chance to work with established artists and produce an opera at a professional level. Transparant is also active internationally: touring productions are an important part of our work, and we have performed at many festivals, including the Salzburger Festspiele, the Avignon Festival, the Holland Festival, the KunstenfestivaldesArts. JOHN GIORNO NICOLETTA BRANCHINI M A RI A H U S M A N N SHELLEY HIRSCH D AV I D M O S S (USA/GERMANY) David Moss is considered one of the most innovative singers and percussionists in contemporary music. He has performed his solo and theatre work around the world, from New York (Lincoln Center) to Venezia (La Fenice) and Brisbane (Festival). In 1991 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship; in 1992, a DAAD Fellowship (Berlin). Moss is co-founder and artistic director of the ILV. In 2006 He performs in the Mexico City Biennale and the Venice Biennale. Moss has sung with the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle, made his Carnegie Hall debut with the American Composers Orchestra, sings regularly with the Ensemble Modern. He sang in Luciano Berio’s Cronaca del Luogo at the 1999 Salzburg Festival and returned there in 2001 as Prince Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus. Moss sings in Heiner Goebbels’ orchestra work Surrogate Cities and in Prometheus, a theatre piece. www.davidmossmusic.com WORKSHOP “THE SINGING SENSATION” RN O The voice is a combination of muscles, air, passion, memory and mind. Singing is the delicate but sharp vocal dance of surprise and desire that can take us out of our bodies. In “The Singing Sensation” we work on shaping melody, carving a solo, caressing a tone, dancing a chant, plus ways to excite a texture, taste the next note, and inhabit your voice. Over 3 days each participant creates, develops and performs their own vocal soundstory, in solo, duo, trio and ensemble work. This workshop is for singers, non-singers, actors, musicians, composers, artists, architects, dancers. Maximum 14 participants WORKSHOP 24-26.06.2006 CONCERT JOHN GIORNO NN 23.06.2006 (USA) John Giorno’s work has changed the way the world views poetry. An innovator of Performance Poetry, John Giorno elevated Spoken Word to a high Art Form, and is one of the influential figures of 20th century poetry. The Giorno Poetry System label (1965) focused on the innovative use of new technologies. As one of the leading lights of the New York Beat generation, he devised the legendary event at the Museum of Modern Art in 1970, during which different poems could be listened to every day on answering machinesThe Giorno Poetry System label has released over fifty LPs and CDs of poets working with performance and music, such as Laurie Anderson. WORKSHOP “THE WISDOM OF THE VOICE” The workshop with John Giorno will be a mental and physical journey using all the energy and intellectual resources of the participants. This workshop is about “being 100% in the present” when writing and performing poetry. It dwells on the moment of realization, both in writing and in speaking/ singing written words. Through interaction and discussion with Giorno, the workshop will focus on moving the written word “out of the armchair and onto the road”; breaking down boundaries of oral and written poetry; and working with the “momentum of sound” and the “channeling of phrase” to create either introspection or frenzy. Giorno will stimulate you by examining the uses and power of repetition and altered phrasings, and help you find out how a poem creates its own music. The workshop is extremely participatory: members write and perform their own words every day. Maximum 14 participants. WORKSHOP SC H 24-26.06.2006 CONCERT 23.06.2006 MAR I A HU SMAN N (G ER MA NY) Maria Husmann’s career as a singer, actress and teacher spans more than forty years. As a 14 year old girl she sang at the Flensburg Stadttheater/Volkstheater; in 1999 she sang in Milan’s Scala. After studies in Singing and Pedagogic in Hamburg, she became a member of the ensemble of the Staatsoper Hamburg and later of Staatsoper Stuttgart and Nationaltheater München. From 1985 on she has worked as a free-lance singer and actress. As a specialist in new music and musical theatre she became friends and worked with composers and directors such as Aribert Reimann, Hans Werner Henze, George Crumb, György Kurtag, Philip Glass, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Harrison Birtwistle, Peter Zadek, Achim Freyer… She created many new works and sang solo shows with Majella, Livius and Simon Stockhausen (piano and electronics). For more than twenty years she’s been working with Peter Palitzsch, long time assistant to Bertolt Brecht. They collaborated at the Berliner Ensemble and created an evening on Brecht songs which toured throughout Europe. OR K S HOP “ T O IN T E RP RET A SONG...” Maria Husmann’s workshop will focus on some typical Brechtian concepts such as epic theatre, gestus, V-effect, dialectic… What does it mean to sing and interpret a song? Together you will work to come closer to the Brechtian ideal as a basis for further individual interpretation. This workshop is open to all singers, actors and performers who enjoy working on and performing some scenes, i.e. Oh Moon of Alabama, from Mahagonny. Maria Husmann would like you to prepare a song or scene preferably in your native language, individually or as a group, to present at the start of the workshop. She suggests a piece from Mahagonny or Dreigroschenoper. Maximum 12 participants. Shelley Hirsch will lead the students through ensemble/choral interjections; character identification and access; stream of consciousness vocal improvisation techniques; body-work designed to open the vocal apparatus to instantaneous mental ideation; individual solo vocal work, in interaction with Ms. Hirsch. This workshop is for those with experience singing, and singing in public, but it is also open to non-professionals and anyone who is passionate about singing. It is an active singing workshop; participants will use their voice every day. Maximum 12 participants. WORKSHOP 3 0 . 0 6 - 0 2 . 07.2006 CONCERT 28.06.2006 P I ER R E- MARIE CH E M LA A S S I S T E D B Y JULIE N FE RRAN DO (FR AN CE ) Bassoonist Pierre-Marie Chemla has incorporated all the repertory of Occidental music in the midst of prestigious orchestras (Royal Opera of Brussels, Orchestra of Paris). He is actively involved in the restoration of early music on ancient instruments and performs with many ensembles of baroque music, of which an enormous discography is the evidence (La Grande Ecurie Ensemble and la Chambre du Roy, Baroque Ensemble of Nice). He has studied Persian and Indian music and works on the chant with masters of proficient music (Dariush Talaï). In 1989, he organized a meeting to bring musicians from North India, Iran and the Occident together. He is also an expert in the field of Gregorian chant, a professor of the bassoon and chamber music at the Academy of Music of Marseille, a member of the ORGANUM and a founder of “Orients Musicaux” and JUBAL of which he is artistic director. Pianist and harpsichordist Julien Ferrando is oriented towards baroque music. He studies Gregorian chant with Pierre-Marie Chemla and the “organetto” with Christophe Deslignes. He is currently finishing a thesis about the musical rhetoric in the political motets of the Court of Avignon. From 2002 to 2004, he was in residence at the Royaumont Foundation as part of a research project on the interpretation and development of repertory for the Roman organ. He is a member of the DIABOLUS IN MUSICA ensemble and JUBAL. He also teaches at the University of Aix en Provence, and directs a course on the interpretation of medieval music. W OR K S HOP “ T HE C HANT OF T HE U P P ER MID D LE A GES” Beginning with the vocal recital, this workshop explores the modal system and the improvisational frameworks of the Gregorian chant. Participants will learn several short pieces of the Carolingian repertory en then do further work with the improvisational ideas which structure and organize these melodies. Participants will have the chance to work on the 12th century improvisatory formulas for the practice of the organum intended for the lead singer, and for unison and polyphonic singing (e.g. Songs of Trouvères) This workshop is open for musicians, singers and non-singers. Maximum 15 participants. WORKSHOP 27-29.06.2006 CONCERT 30.06.2006 LECTURE 27 AND 29.06.2006 NI C O L ET TA BRAN CH IN I (ITA LY) Nicoletta Branchini has been active as a dancer since 1991. Through relaxation exercises the body and voice will open up. We will focus on ground exercises, breathing techniques and posture, all of which are important to make the voice sound better. EVERY DAY 0 9 . 3 0 – 1 0.15 T HE SI NG E R AN D IM PROVISE D MU SI C : A FORUM Improvisation is the momentary, always evolving result of personal timing and eccentric virtuosity that occurs while using musical instruments, vocal chords, bodies, objects, words. Surprise, structure, personality, relationships, timing, and energy all play essential roles. Do singers, instrumentalists, composers, choreographers think about and create improvisation in different ways? Does a singer have a unique universe of musical and theatrical associations (Maria Callas, Billie Holiday, Enrico Caruso, Aretha Franklin, Cathy Berberian, James Brown, Björk, opera, pop concerts, for example) to work with? How do singing improvisers “get out of their skin” to find something universal? How is improvising with the voice different from instrumental improvisation? Is it? Is there such a thing as pure improvisation, and can a singer do this? We’ve invited Shelley Hirsch, John Giorno, David Moss, Jean-Marc Montera, and surprise guests from the art-scene of Marseille to discuss these points and more. FORUM 27.06.2006 V O I C ES AND CH OICE S Every ILV session features an evening dedicated to the voices of the participants. At the Voices and Choices night, the ILV turns the microphone and the stage over to them. All the workshop members are invited to sing/perform their music in front of a live audience. Participants at the ILV include talented singers and performers, known and unknown, at all professional levels from around Europe. The Voices and Choices night offers everyone the chance to sing for, and hear, each other in a relaxed setting. Participants must register in advance. Performances will be a maximum of 10 minutes in length. (free access for everyone) CONCERT 29.06.2006 V O X TAL KS Have you ever wondered what goes on inside the mind of your favourite singers while they are singing? Asked yourself what it is like to perform a solo vocal concert? Wanted to know how it feels to sing a specific song or sound or text? Why sing? How do professional singers find their personal styles? What is the connection between words and performance? How do emotion, passion and intellect fit together in the human voice? Vox Talks can answer these questions and many more, as wildly different and wonderful singers meet with you in the intimate atmosphere of Montevidéo and talk about their voices. SO U VE N I RS D E I LV A M A R S E I L L E E N 2003 Institut of Living Voice a déjà été invité par de nombreuses structures. OR K S HOP “ T O IN T E RP RET A SONG...” Maximum 16 participants. FORUM 27.06.2006 V O I C ES AND CH OICE S Chaque session d’ILV comporte une soirée consacrée aux expérimentations vocales.
